Immediately crashes 23 302 when added to timeline. Works fine in Version 22 with transparency.

This is just a thought experiment to me for I am the Nesting King for all of eternity.

Of course, as with every solution, there's also a (small) disadvantage using a nested veggie instead. Depending on the complexity of the animation veggie, previewing the overlay animation is seldom smooth.

Another trick I've used in the past is to use Color Correction Secondary FX which allows creating a dynamic mask based on color, luminance, &/or saturation with the option of setting the amount of transparency. It's like chroma key on steroids and is most effective with the project and preview set to best.
