Video added to timeline has limited color

sRecollet wrote on 3/18/2025, 10:40 AM

Hi. Another slight issue with Vegas Pro 22, checked on 21 and same thing. When I use video on Vegas it strips away color and that from original video. I'll add image as you can see huge difference from original video and then when opened in Vegas. Footage is recorded from a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, never ran into this issue before. Any fixes, Thanks.

If the levels are wrong you can change them en masse to full - highlight all in the media bin. If you want to share a sample via a file sharing service happy to test it here, too.

@sRecollet @RogerS Hi, I can replicate a similar look with my Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

If I turn this on it produces 10bit video

You can have this file on Google Drive if you want.

--------------

I don't know enough to comment as I don't use 10bit but if I change the Pixel format to 32-bit ... (full range) it cuts off the top 🤷‍♂️

I think then that the OP's issue isn't a levels mismatch one but viewing HDR10 media in a SDR environment.

You'd need to use 32-bit full with HDR on (not sure if that's working right in VP 21.315 or VP 22 and don't have an appropriate monitor to test it on either).

That cropping is clearly wrong but doesn't seem to be the OP's issue. Had you reported that before?

RogerS wrote on 3/19/2025, 6:29 AM

Here's an attempt to work with this HDR video in ACES on a SDR display (and comparison with MPC Black).

Gid wrote on 3/19/2025, 7:05 AM

Hmm, same setting it still cuts it off,, I've got a GPU driver waiting for me so I'll get back to this,

I have tested the odd file for my own education but like I say I don't generally use 10bit & I haven't seen or reported that before.

This is with the RTX 3090 with it also doing the decoding in preferences / file io? I'm testing it here on a RTX 4060 so surprised we're seeing different things.

Gid wrote on 3/19/2025, 9:38 AM

@RogerS I'm still on Windows 10, don't know if that makes a difference.

I did discover this tho - Legacy AVC nor HEVC make any difference but -

  • Preferences - File IO - Hardware decoder - Off - makes no difference.
  • turning that back on & turning off -
  • Preferences - Video - GPU acceleration - Off - does fix it 🤷‍♂️,

This combo -

----

PS, I've turned my GPU back on as this shouldn't affect my usual editing with 8bit, I'll leave the file on Google if anyone or the V team want to try it.

& while testing I noticed it doesn't happen if it gets loaded onto a 16:9 project. 🤷‍♂️

@Gid This may have been fixed in the beta build of 22 as the release notes say
"Portrait-mode media is now displayed properly in the preview window"

Thanks for the info guys. Shortly after I posted I did randomly fiddle with the Pixel Format settings and noticed the changes you guys posted as well. Got the cropping, even when switching the HDR mode. I will update Vegas when I can. Here's media info., FYI. :)

Gid wrote on 3/20/2025, 4:04 AM

@sRecollet Thanks for that, different frame rate but the rest is the same as mine,. For future filming you could turn off the HDR10+ option on your phone so it records in 8bit & you won't have this problem, at least until you update Vegas anyway, or maybe you want to record in 10bit...

That image you shared is Properties - Media Information but there's another app everyone here uses, the App is called MediaInfo, (yeah I know 🙃) -

Download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here like my pic earlier in my first comment 👍

Or Copy & paste the information in a new comment like this -

@sRecollet If the s23 settings screen is bombing out when you try to turn off HDR, you might need to reboot it. On mine, hdr is greyed out for avc and only active for hevc. I don't have a stand-alone hdr monitor so I turn off hdr on the s23 when shooting hevc. The footage I get is marked limited range (like yours) but I prefer editing in Vegas in full range. If I set the project to 32-bit full, it also requires that the compositing gama be set to 2.222 (Video) and the View Transform be set to OFF. Then the color stays unchanged when I switch between 8-bit full and 32-bit full.

sRecollet wrote on 3/27/2025, 7:36 PM

@Howard-Vigorita Can't even attempt to switch hdr10 on phone. As soon as I hit settings it displays for half a second then goes right back to recording screen. Can't update app through Samsun Store either as can't log in.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 3/28/2025, 9:30 AM

@sRecollet Definitely sounds like a cellphone support issue. If rebooting or os/firmware update cannot be done, suggest you try backing up and clearing the user storage space to see if that helps. Failing that, take it to a carrier's store. They could wipe it and reinstall or maybe even offer a free upgrade to s24 if they have any left over. Right now Verizon in my area is also offering a deep discount upgrade to an s25.
