What do I need to do to not lose custom settings upon fresh reinstall?

Hi everyone. Recently I've started getting an issue where VEGAS 21 Pro will crash after hitting the "Render As..." button, with no error code or anything. I hit the button, my cursor wheel-spins for about 5 seconds, then the program just closes. I read multiple people saying that launching VEGAS with preferences reset and deleting cached application data fixes the problem, and that does indeed fix it for me, but only for a short time. After launching the program with reset preferences and deleting cached data, I only seem to be able to close and re-launch the program 2 or 3 times before "Render As..." will start crashing it again, without exception. I have 2 questions:

I assume I'll need to try a fresh install to make this problem go away, but I wanted to ask for everyone's advice on what exactly I should do to ensure I don't lose any of the stuff I use in my regular daily workflow - render presets, pan/crop presets, fonts that I've added to the VEGAS text generator font library, etc.

I've also got another question on a related note - since I've had to launch the program with preferences reset & cache deletion multiple times now, I've noticed that it doesn't delete much of my custom stuff, but it does always delete my custom pan/crop presets, which is really frustrating because I use those all the time in my work. Is there any way I can save those from being deleted when I launch the program with preferences reset?

Custom render settings should be stored in C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\VEGAS\Render Templates

Custom window layouts should be stored in C:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\VEGAS Pro\xx.0 (where xx is the Vegas Pro version number such as 22.0)

Custom FX presets should be in C:\Users\user name\Documents\OFX Presets

Custom LUTs created in Vegas Pro should be in C:\Users\user name\Documents\VEGAS LUTs

I'm not sure where pan/crop customer presets are stored but suspect that it is in the registry which, if that is the case, would explain why a reset/cache deletion clears them.

Again, I'm not sure but suspect that fonts might be stored in C:\Windows\Fonts.

### Note: 'Hidden items' must be checked in the View menu of Windows Explorer in order to see AppData and its sub-folders.

Why what?

Why in the Registry when other settings are either in your User AppData or your User Documents as shown earlier by Dexcon. There's probably a good technical reason but being inquisitive I wonder why.

As for your original query I assume you've searched the forum and come across the following thread. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/where-can-i-find-my-track-motion-and-mask-presets--144944/#ca908095

The method suggested by Jack S is one I've used and it worked for me.

This tread should be a sticky!

I personally do not like that all these settings are scattered around on your system like a puzzle to be solved.

If you may, I will add another complication, If you move your "documents" folder to Microsoft's cloud service one drive personal, you may end up with 2 "document" folder locations (like in my case):

- one old C:\Users\user name\Documents\OFX Presets

- one new C:\Users\user name\OneDrive\Documents\OFX Presets

I had issues in the past that Vegas took the custom settings from the wrong (old) documents folder. I had to copy over the settings to the correct new folder and adapt paths manually.

Quite a few programs still insist in using the old documents folder location, I gave up on relocating them.

my 2 cents

I agree it should be a sticky as I have had issues trying to remember where setting are located.

The Toolbar and Timeline Toolbar customized layouts are saved here in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VEGAS Creative Software\VEGAS Pro\2x.0\Metrics\Application

There's this thread with backup locations but I don't know if it is still valid for the newer versions of VEGAS Pro: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/tutorials/backup-locations-for-all-vegas-pro-templates-presets-and-settings--139290/

Gotcha, I misunderstood your phrasing. Yes, I agree, it's very weird. I did do some searching but didn't come across that thread, thanks for sharing. The suggested solution is exactly the conclusion I came to, but it's stupid that a workaround like that is apparently the best option. Very unfortunate

I cannot find where pan/crop presets are so also suspect they might be in the registry, but why?

Expected to find PanCrop presets in or near OFX Presets as xml. Not. They are indeed in a registry entry under each Vegas version. The way they're stored is unusual. For instance, when I created a preset in vp22 and searched the name with RegEdit, I first found the name in a text value named S4400. And noticed a nearby binary value named B4400 which is probably related. They were under this key:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VEGAS Creative Software\VEGAS Pro\22.0\Metrics\Application

S4400: My PanCrop Preset

B4400:

I suspect PanCrop presets might be Vegas' oldest. Before they came up with a more portable way to save them.
