Auto Duck effect

marcinzm wrote on 11/2/2024, 2:58 PM

Hello,

I had high hopes for this effect - Auto Duck, but after using it I see that I will have to maybe resign from it or maybe I do something wrong with it.

Mostly in wedding videos I have such scenario:
a) a few seconds of music

b) then a few seconds of priest speech

c) then again a few seconds of music

d) then again a few seconds of priest speech

etc.

I would like to have lower volume level of music sound when the priest speaks and normal volume level when the priest doesn't speak. When the priest doesn't speak i.e. there is a drone footage or there are a wedding guests in this part of video.

In this scenario this Auto Duck effect doesn't work well. My music should be in normal volume level when the priest doesn't speak. It should be lower when the priest speaks.

Is it possible to do it with this effect? My music volume varies rapidly when the priest doesn't speak. In this part of sound track there is no sound (event volume is on minimum level) when the priest doesn't speak.

Auto Duck effect should impact on volume curve on the blank audio event (by blank I mean the event which is clean silence i.e. it is muted).

Can you give me some tips for using this effect and achieved my goal?

Regards

Marcin

I am 42. I have been creating videos since 2009 (the date when my first daughter was born in). My first video software was Pinnacle, next one was Sony Vegas 8 (I am not sure if remember it correctly). I am also a developer and wedding movie operator and editor. For example: I have created an Android app which let me control Vegas Pro rendering progress level on Android smartphone. I created it for fun, because I also love programming. I also created my own plugin for Audio To Text feature specified usage from Vegas Pro 19. I created proxy creation plugin which uses multiple GPU threads (maximum 3) to create proxy files for Vegas Pro. I also written many others plugin/softwares which enhance my video editing, also wedding editing.

Looks like auto duck is still reading the send track levels while it is muted, but when you delete the track all together it works properly

Side-chain compressors are readily available for free or otherwise ..but.. unfortunately Vegas does not natively support side-chaining despite many many requests going back to the 1999' Sonic Foundry beta version of Vegas 1.. which btw was an audio-only DAW).
One of the very few side-chain compressors I am aware of that will work in Vegas is from db Auidioware where one can assign a sub-master bus as a trigger send.

I recall scripts from Vegasaur and HOS for ducking but have not tried any, I draw volume envelopes manually and sometimes automate EQ changes for coinciding frequencies.

I really love the idea of doing what a what a ducker does using envelopes. Been doing it that way manually for years with Vegas. But its quite tedious and time consuming to get it just right. Can't tell you how happy I was that they might have automated away the drudgery for me. Hoping it gets better. Wonder if we could just right a script to read levels and edit a volume or other envelope accordingly.

@pierre-k I can confirm Auto ducking is flawed in some cases, I'll submit a separate post.

I didn't know about this function, it's interesting and it could be useful to me, where can I find it in vegas pro 22 and how to apply it? I'm having trouble finding clear information on the subject, thank you.

Thank you for this clear and precise information! and yes I understood that there was currently a malfunction, I will test on my side to see how it works and if I also face the same problems

@marcinzm

Please see https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/realtime-voiceover-recording-with-ducking-in-vegas--142697/

It takes a lot of intuition to set it up right with your box, but it works flawlessly.

@marcinzm

I assume these periods of the priest speaking and silence all happen within one take (element). In my case, I may be behind the camera doing a voice over while filming or engaging with someone in a conversation who is in front of the camera while background music is ducked. During the same take, I may pan away or stop talking while I continue to film. It is at this point I want the music to increase ("un-duck"). Vegas un-ducks during gaps between elements but does not seem to un-duck (enough) when there are periods of silence within an element. Also, the user needs be able to set or adjust the attack and decay of the ducking.
