Canon R5C audio channels do not show - or sound in Vegas

MP- wrote on 3/8/2023, 7:29 AM

The audio tracks (4 channels) of the MXF files of Canon R5C present a unique problem when I use them as project media in Vegas pro 20 or 19 (have both):

No waveform is shown - even if I try to rebuild tracks - while no sound is also heard when you try to play the timeline or to render those files.

Yet, these MXF do have sound, as VLC plays them normally without any problem.

So far what I do is almost ridiculus. I use VLC to convert the MXF file to audio wav - which then I insert to the Vegas timeline and I render without any further problem.

I have tried everything - including project properties etc.

Has anyone encountered such an issue?

Many thanks

Here is the screen showing the audio channels as completely empty - while they are not

I do not know if this will solve the problem, but try checking 'on' the MXF audio option in Options/Preferences/General to (arrowed):

Unfortunately I had already tried that... nothing changes.

Indeed the MXF IS imported as mutlichannel as you can see in the screenshot.

It just does not work / sound though

thanks though

@MP-

Post Mediainfo report for your source media and/or post a sample on a cloud sharing site and

post the link

here for others to try.

I've held the camera, but not shot with it so I don't have a sample file handy.

@MP- I've confirmed the audio doesn't load in Vp20b326, it does load in the children's NLE Capcut and also Resolve

Normally the problem is solved by rewrapping in shutter encoder with the following settings

Unfortunately Shutter encode also doesn't decode your audio correctly. This is quite unusual

@MP- Actually shutter encoder is working fine. Vegas won't load any of the rewrapped audio in various formats, but in Resolve you can see the audio is identical.

This is beyond my pay grade, a senior member of the forum may be able to help

MP- wrote on 3/9/2023, 6:02 AM

But Resolve does not recognize my Radeon 6800xt and refuses even to start...

Former user wrote on 3/9/2023, 6:12 AM

@MP- you can extract the audio using shutter encoder, it's just not a very elegant solution

MP- wrote on 3/9/2023, 6:22 AM

Sure, thanks. As in my first post, I already do that via VLC convert to wav.

I does feel weird and spooky that I might be the only Canon R5C videographer using the Magix Vegas.....

And I do not want to shift to Adobe Premiere, bc I hate the subscription model

Dexcon wrote on 3/9/2023, 10:09 AM

Thank you for providing the .MXF example. I too could find no way of getting the audio to playback or for the waveform to display on the timeline with either 4 track or single track audio. To be fair, I'm only currently using a modest Dell i5 laptop while travelling.

Each day, I am using a Rode Stereo VideoMic on a Sony FDR-AX100E camera and its stereo PCM audio plays back without a problem in Vegas Pro 20 b326. I also have a Sennheiser MKE600 (mono) back home which has not presented problems in the past on that same camera.

I do not know your camera, but does it have audio settings to record audio in conventional mono or stereo to match the microphone being used rather than default recording in 4 tracks?

I tried all 4 tracks on your .MXF media opening in Sound Forge Pro 15 from Vegas Pro but without a successful result - blank waveform and no sound in all cases. Setting the default audio editor to Audacity didn't work because Audacity didn't recognise the audio whereas it usually recognises mono/stereo PCM audio.

Just a thought - does your computer's sound card have settings to cater for 4 track audio that might be able to be utilised via the 'Direct Sound Surround Mapper' (or other setting) in 'Audio Device Type' under Options/Preferences/Audio Device (tab)?

@MP-

It's time for a Magix Bug Report.

MP- wrote on 3/9/2023, 10:40 AM

I have reported tp support and they also verified thr problem. Lets hope it is addressed in the new build

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 3/9/2023, 10:59 PM

@MP- A workaround is to use ffmpeg to just re-wrap the mxf into a mov:

ffmpeg -i A014C224_230309RQ_CANON.MXF -y -c:v copy -c:a copy -map 0 -strict -2 canon.mov

Btw... looks like another Vegas bug is not recognizing aivx as avc... had to force the avc vtag in the metadata.
