Delete Unused Media From Project

Amivideotek wrote on 5/3/2023, 7:28 AM

I often notice that media that no longer appears in the timeline but is still in the Project Media tab is not deleted when I use the "Remove all unused media from project" button!
I am currently using Vegas Pro 20 (b370).
Are there still people where this button does not work properly?

No - the 'remove ...' button works perfectly in my experience. If I move/remove media, the missing media window doesn't pop up after removing via the Project Media window.

Try updating to new build 402 to see if that makes any difference.

I always use Clean Project Media in the Tools menu and that always works for me.

Amivideotek wrote on 5/3/2023, 1:26 PM

I just tested it, but it doesn't work as it should.
When I ask about a certain event that should disappear from the Project Media, 'Select Timeline Event' Vegas does not find this media either!

@Amivideotek Show the details in the Project Media:

And look for the "Use Count". Is that zero?

Amivideotek wrote on 5/3/2023, 1:59 PM

jetdv, no the count is always > 1

This is definitely an idea I'm going to use later.

If the count is > 0, it is definitely being used somewhere in the project. Perhaps as a take on another event?

@Amivideotek
If you don't know what "takes" are, read the help text - it's really worth it. A really great functionality.

Amivideotek wrote on 5/5/2023, 11:38 AM

I've tried a bit of "takes" and I now understand better why "takes" serve. I always used "takes" to replace a video file with another video file but with retaining the effects used.
It will probably be because of this that certain video files do not disappear from the project list because I have bound them in a "take" without realizing why "takes" are for!

Meanwhile, I have found a solution to use "takes" to replace an event with enother avent and keep the modifications.

I drag a video from Explorer or Project Media over another video and keep all the modifications as effects, pan&crop, masks and properties used

- I drag a video from Explorer or Project Media to the timeline and modify it as I want
- If I want to replace this video with another one and keep the modifications, I drag the new video from Explorer or Project Media with the right mouse button pressed on the existing video on the timeline
- In the drop-down menu I select "Add as takes"
- On the timeline I now select the new video and the audio
- With Vegasaur > 1-click command > Delete inactive takes
- Now I can in Vegas Pro > Project Media > Remove all unused media from project to clean up the project media list.
There are many other ways to do this, but the best way would be if this feature existed in Vegas Pro.

Just look at the timeline itself. Any event with takes will show you the number of takes and which take is showing.

Or open the Edit Details windows (view - windows - edit details)

Amivideotek wrote on 5/6/2023, 1:18 PM

To jetdv : I had seen the first solution, but in my video there are too many pieces of film to check. But your second solution helps me a lot. I'm definitely going to use that.

Can I ask a quick question, for some reason I cannot drag a clip from project media tab to the timeline with left click V20-403(can do this in V19, V18 ect). Can drag with right click.

To andyrpsmith, I left dragged a video file from Windows Explorer, Vegas Pro Explorer, Vegas Pro Trimmer and Project Media without any problem.
The version I used was Vegas Pro 20 (b.403).
Try it with a video file with a different extension or maybe reinstall Vegas Pro 20!
