Files from my camera are not working with Vegas 21. Extremely weird!

Uytkownik-Vegasa wrote on 1/30/2024, 7:26 AM

I just started the Vegas 21 trial and I'm very disappointed with its quality.
Files that Vegas 13 and Vegas 14 import and play without problems do not play properly in Vegas 21!!!

I can't do my job because the program doesn't read files from my camera.
Why is this happening? Even more so since older versions of the program correctly read files from my camera. Why Version 21 is not working with these?

I have a Canon 5D Mark IV and this is an example file:
Format            : MPEG-4 at 75,4 Mb/s
Length            : 244 MiB for 27s 127 ms

Video #0          : AVC at 73,8 Mb/s
Aspect            : 1920 x 1080 (1.778) at 29.970 fps

Audio #0          : PCM at 1.536 kb/s
Infos             : 2 channels, 48,0 kHz
Here is a video sample directly from my camera: https://we.tl/t-XqbjCgZU5l

For God's sake, I had problems reading files in versions of Sony Vegas from 10 years ago.
Why, when I come back to your software after many years, am I still unable to work properly? How your program is unable to read files from such a popular SLR camera as the Canon 5D Mark IV?

What should I do to make Vegas 21 play files from my camera correctly? After doing proxy, it still doesn't work. A red, blank screen is displayed.

Please take my message very seriously because I don't have time. I asked my boss to buy your software. And your software doesn't work... What I have to tell him? I made him choose Magix Vegas over Adobe Premiere Pro. And it turns out to be a bad decision.

Second, your program incorrectly identifies screens. And it shows the preview on half the screens. It all shows in this short video. See how Vegas 21 cuts out and displays the preview incorrectly:

God has nothing to do with this.

What are your computer specs?

The file I downloaded, is that recorded directly from the Canon camera? It looks like the same video you posted at the bottom.

Video played back fine on my computer.

If you want help, please answer "B" and "C" from this POST.

For me - Quicktime enabled your file loads into VP21 but is mostly black only flashing the occasional frame. - Same in VP18, 19 & 20.

Don't know why because this is the MediaInfo of your clip & to my novice eye it seems ok 🤷‍♂️

I added most of info you asked for. File I attached in WeTransfer are directly from my camera. It's original, unedited file. I know that this is similat to YouTube versions, but it's original.

Spec of my computer is:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700X 8-core 3,40 GHz
64 GB RAM
Windows 10 Home (64bit) 22H2
GeForce GTX 1060 6GB

Version of Vegas 21 is: Build 208

You see, a @Former user has the same trouble like me.
@j-v, no this didn't help :( The same.

@Uytkownik-Vegasa thanks for the additional information. Again, the file played back on my all AMD computer with any complaints, black screens, etc..

It played back in Best>Full at 29.97fps all the way through. The difference between your computer and mine is the graphics card.... you and @Former user both have Nvidia, me, AMD.

@Reyfox On Vegas 13 everything is working properly! On Vegas 14 everythings is also working properly! On Vegas 21 is not working at all. I can't explain this.

Why didn't you try to click a few seconds later, go back and click a few seconds later again? You just played and that's all. Any actions was not applied.

Listen to @Reyfox "...you and @Gid both have Nvidia, me, AMD."

  • Try turning off your Nvidia decoding.
  • Check for a different driver.

@Uytkownik-Vegasa
You have changed the Dynamic RAM preview max to reserve all the available RAM for another task.
That means that it is not available for other (normal) tasks in Vegas.
Set it back to default or 0, restart the computer and try again.

This file is an ALL-I , it consists only of only I-frames which is great for editing, and should be great for Vegas because it's video engine has poor performance relative to other NLE's. BUT Vegas has very poor compatibility with All-I AVC video via GPU decode. It can cause black frames and memory leak until computer crashes.

Not your computer, or drivers, or your fault. It's Vegas's bug but aren't in any hurry to fix.

Steve_Rhoden wrote on 1/30/2024, 6:06 PM

@Uytkownik-Vegasa Simple fix is by enabling those boxes in the File I/O option, as you have discovered. Having to do this is not a step backwards, its for better handling of these and other video formats, newer formats and some, because quicktime is no longer supported on windows.

Reyfox wrote on 1/31/2024, 9:00 AM

@Former user if it's a Vegas bug, why is it that that particular file plays absolutely fine on my computer and as @john_dennis demonstrated, on his computer?

Neither of you are using NVDEC is my guess as it's been quite broken in VEGAS for a while. If I recall right, John is using QSV and you are using AMD.

Reyfox wrote on 1/31/2024, 9:23 AM

So it is a Nvidia issue?

Downloaded the clip and it plays and renders fine on my laptop, no matter how I config decoding or main gpu. Vp21 b208 handles it best for me with default settings (3060 gpu, IrisXe decoding). See no Nvidia issue at all, other than selecting nvdec runs a little bit slower for me than qsv-dec. Laptop specs are: Zenbook Pro 16x; i9-12900h 32gb (IrisXe {101.5084} & rtx3060 {546.33}) Win11

Former user wrote on 1/31/2024, 6:07 PM

@Reyfox Yeah but never confuse that with a Nvidia hardware or driver problem, It's a Vegas's poor and buggy support for Nvidia GPU decoders. Nvidia GPU's make up 87% of the market, they're really shooting themselves in the foot. They've known about this problem in regards to VP21 since the first day of release. I made sure they knew.

RogerS wrote on 1/31/2024, 6:14 PM

FWIW staff here have discussed the issue in general talking about how they are working to address various bottlenecks in the video engine. Knowing there is a problem, having resources to fix the problem and actually fixing the problem are not the same.

For the screen overlap issue, check alternative high DPI settings in options/preferences/display. That happens when screen resolutions are mismatched.

@Uytkownik-Vegasa

For the file it worked with my laptop and NVDEC decoding (GTX 1050) selected in file io (legacy AVC off) with VP 21. The next oldest version I have here is 19.651. I tried that with Intel decoding and it also worked with no problem at full framerate. I skipped back and forth, no freeze, no black screen. I have the latest NVIDIA studio driver installed, do you?

I know it's a new installation but maybe try a reset and cache clear in case it inherited something from the old VEGAS versions?
