Please Fix the Context Menus in the Project Media Bin

ALO wrote on 2/27/2023, 10:05 AM

Please fix the context menus in the project media bin. It is incredibly annoying to have to deselect items in the bin in order to right click and gain access to the context menu options.

right click on a clip on the timeline, choose "select in project media list." If you then right-click on the media in the project media bin, key context menu options are greyed out (until you de-select the clip and then right-click on it).

Please fix!

What version of Vegas? Which right-click menu items? Which file types? I tried your procedure on a .mp4 in the timeline with and without deselecting the file in the media bin. I could not tell if there were any differences in the right-click menu. (version 20 build 326)

@ALO I am not able to reproduce that problem you are seeing. What specifically in the project media context menu is greyed out that you are unable to get to without deselecting and then right clicking again?

@ALO
A screenshot of the entire screen clarifying what you have written would certainly be helpful.

Here's a screen capture of the issue. *sometimes* this happens, and sometimes it doesn't, and unfortunately I can't figure out how to guarantee it happens. But it happens most of the time. You might have to click around a bit and move the cursor in the timeline.

The Vegas code base is truly like a big old haunted house. Lot of ghosts in there!

There's also something weird going on with the explorer window, but I'll save that for another day...

@ALO
I have tried the same thing about 30 times now (Vegas Pro 20- Build 326) - always the same drop-down menu as your first example.
Have you already tried a reset?
Please follow the instructions very carefully:https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-reset-vegas-pro-to-default-settings--104646/

I just downloaded and installed VP20 on a clean user account on a completely different machine.

I was able to immediately replicate the issue. Not sure what else to say.

@ALO
Now I have caught the ghosts!

It makes a difference whether you click on the picture - or the frame!
I had already thought I'm going crazy - but watch your screen capture carefully - also you click once on the image and then again on the frame!

@ALO @VEGASDerek I am not able to reproduce. I hope this helps by means of excluding possible system/HW dependancy of the issue.

@bitman
Did you read my entry? Can you reproduce that?

bitman wrote on 3/6/2023, 7:40 AM

@ALO @VEGASDerek @walter-i. I can finally reproduce the issue! Walter nailed it, but it takes more than just clicking on the frame to reproduce: the file name of the video is also important; more specific, the length of the file name must be rather short in order to reproduce. Longer names (which have a larger " name box" on the GUI work OK). Short names have a smaller hit box and if clicked outside the name field hitbox (e.g. on the bottom right of the frame) do not register a highlight.

er...I don't think this a feature request, or that the issue is solved?? You've both corroborated a bug in the Project Media bin

ALO wrote on 3/7/2023, 8:41 AM

For the purposes of replicating this, walter & bitman figured it out -- it matters where you click. If the view is set to list or details, everything is fine (I think). Switch to thumbnails and right-click on a highlighted (selected) item in the media bin *on the frame rather than the actual preview portion of the icon* and the context menu items will be grayed out.

john_dennis wrote on 3/9/2023, 6:14 PM

@VEGASDerek

I observed that not all the frame around the thumbnail is "pickable" for context menus. Below the thumbnail picture, in the area of the file name, only the immediate area occupied by the filename itself is pickable.

Since the implementation of Hover Scrub many of us try to avoid the picture since it is a moving target. That leaves us grabbing for the corner of the highlighted box. The corners are frequently not "active" for selection.
