Post Your VEGAS Creations!

Sorry if there is already a thread for this, I tried a search that came up empty. This could make a cool sticky thread, where we post projects we've worked on, and can answer questions about how we did what we did in Vegas. Constructive criticism is also welcome.

Here's a recap we made for a music festival we film near Cancun every year for the band Widespread Panic:

Great video very professional! I would render at 4k tho even tho you shot in 1080p when uploading to youtube. (4k will yield a much higher bitrate on youtube making your footage look better quality wise)

Grazie wrote on 11/24/2017, 2:45 AM

Yup, great camera work. I never do exciting stuff like this anymore. Harrumph!!!

OK, please take this as well meant, I found a mismatch between the energy and pace of the Band and the cutting sequencing. The former was/is punchy and upbeat whilst the latter was leisurely and “dwelling”. I feel the piece could have had benefitted from Crazy-Grazie dust sprinkled over it. But hey, what do I know. I’m making boring ole public info stuff.

And yes, I’d watch it again.

xberk wrote on 11/26/2017, 6:13 PM

Ok. You asked for it. Since I retired, I've done a mountain of Home Video -- mostly "trip video". This short piece (3 min) seems appropriate to that sort of work where nothing is planned and the shooting is all done on the fly. It's always a challenge to "make something" out of it later in the editing.

Hi @fr0sty - how long is it needed to edit that music festival clip? and how many camera sources are that?

Set, as you’ve asked the question of fr0sty, you’re really not wishing me to reply. However, outcome is everything. I’ve edited a dance and upbeat sequence with 3 cameras with a balance cam. Using VP and Scripts, it took me a day. Stepping away from the turmoil on the Timeline is most essential.

set wrote on 11/26/2017, 11:50 PM

Thanks for your reply @Grazie ... well, for me, the 'selection of shot' process and the early sequencing still needs a lot of time, deep focus, and sometimes if you are not in the mood - that makes 'the process' even 'more difficult'.

Still learning how to get faster with this one. - especially if you have no idea what to expect.

We shot that video using 3 GH4's, 1 GH3, 1 GH2 (rarely used), a gopro clipped way up on the top of the stage, a Sony FS7 (all the flatter looking shots), and a DJI drone, though I can't remember the exact model. There was a crew of 4 of us on site, and the recap took about a week to organize all of the video and cut it together.

Here's another video we shot, this one isn't recap style, but a multicam full-song edit. One of the best looking light rigs I've ever personally filmed, especially once they start up the lasers.

Peter -- nice music ... nicely shot and edited video. Can't say I saw it all, but what I did see was well produced as a music piece. From what I gather, it was just you on various instruments and your drummer. Cool.

What would have held my interest longer would have been an upclose interview and voice overs by you and your drummer to let us behind the scenes of how this got produced and recorded or even views into your personal tastes -- life experience (how you get to this point) -- etc. This could have been filled out with visuals to match that might take us outside the session. The music could still run throughout (or nearly). In other words, if you want to run 10 minutes, open it up.

I put the following promo video together along those lines when the album was released.

@fr0sty Great idea to do such a thread but let's not make it sticky. (we could make it sticky, when we have less sticky threads which are important as these we are having right now)

I would prefer when we have regular reoccurring threads like this. I'm not sure how long these would be apart from another. I feel one month is to short, because some projects take more than that.

What do you guys think? Doing something like this monthly or every two or three months?

Best regards
Mathias

NickHope wrote on 12/6/2017, 11:11 AM

@VEGAS_CommunityManager I'm not sure what you mean (perhaps your 1st sentence of 2nd paragraph is unfinished?).

Can't we just let this thread run indefinitely? It can naturally bump to the top as people post new videos. I could also add a link to it in the FAQ post, like I did for the tutorials post.

I agree that we shouldn't have any more sticky posts for now (at least until the so4compoundplug post can be un-stickied).

p.s. Thread merging would be a very nice forum feature!

OK here's a bit of reality stuff. Run and gun, nothing planned. My brother lives in an idyllic little village in the North of Scotland, in the spring he took us on walk-about. No stunning photography, just trying to capture the atmosphere and the moment. XF200, MS stereo rig on-camera, VP13/453.

Hmm, if you want to do this, perhaps a monthly 'fun challenge' can be one of idea... (no need for a prize or selecting 'who is the best' - because that could create a tension, but just sharing a fun or culture sharing)

Like, maybe, for this month of December: 'Show your video or your moments of Christmas and Holiday Season...'

Next month of January, maybe it is about 'sharing a hope in 2018', or 'how optimist you are in 2018'...

February..., for some culture, it is a month of 'Chinese New Year celebrations', while on other culture, it is also a month of Valentine...

Next month of March... well, can be decided later...

It's just my own personal fun idea anyway :) - but love to hear other opinions....

Since @MartinE shared his trip video of another hometown using Canon XF200, that reminded me of another user of Canon XF group in Facebook, where one XF100 owner from Malaysia visits me to Indonesia many years ago (2012! - I think that was still Sony Vegas Pro 11 / 12 - 😁 - Shot with Canon XF100 & Sony NEX-VG20)...

Enjoy the video of my hometown, Bandung, in 2012:

And here's my recent Bali sailing (Bali Island to Nusa Lembongan Island) trip moments with my high-school alumni group:
