@NOVAdash Hi, sorry I neglected to mention I use Mocha Pro not Vegas tracking for covering those no' plates. if it's just a blur or a pixelation Boris Continuum has a basic Mocha tracker built into all the fx's.

The Myth of Resolution by Richard Pence

Had small technical conversation with Richard Pence in one of Facebook Vegas Pro editor's group, and he shared the complete documentary link, so I asked him to post his feature here as well. Enjoy watching!

I gave it a thumbs up. Thoughtful, wide-ranging, nicely put-together composition of ideas to make a valid point that I've always advocated (when appropriate).

@set Hi. I'll watch it properly later, I got a bit lost when he started talking about Gigapixels & average cameras, my phone does 200mp so got distracted in research & taking pictures... & now i've got to go out 😂

200mp but it's a S23 Ultra phone so prob not the best 😂😂

Here's one of the 200mp phone pics if anyone wants to see, it's nowt special, just a picture 😁

@Former user : just a little fun with your S23 Ultra pic 😁

Project 1080p - and only event pan/crop zooming in until 1920x1080 size

Well - it's more than just a megapixel for sure... - lens quality, image sensor type, etc.

Even though I'm thinking about getting an S23 Ultra (it looks better than what I've got at the moment), that phone's camera was recently discussed in https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/samsung-galaxy-s23-ultra-and-vegas-pro--140651/

But then I use a phone camera as a third level of video capture. First is a 4K videocam with a 1" image chip; then a GoPro Black 11; then a phone more for its convenience than quality. Also, if in a public area, the use of a phone camera is far less conspicuous - and accepted - than using a much larger handheld camera which probably makes many feel uncomfortable than would otherwise occur when faced with a phone camera which many others are probably also using.

Even though Samsung claim 8K with their S23, which would you ideally prefer - forgetting price - an 8K video from a phone camera or 8K from something like a BMD camera?

Re stabilisation, yes absolutely that Mocha Pro - and Mocha tracking in BCC FX - is excellent. But I've found over the years that no stabiliser deals well with every situation. Each stabiliser has its own advantages. For moving video like in NOVAdash's YT video, I'd be looking at Mercalli 5's (or earlier) Glide camera setting. But then I've had many instances with moving video looking out the side window of a bus where no stabiliser can improve things. Simply, the stabiliser can't lock on to anything and the image just becomes a jittery mess.

Clarification: I'm only referring to video, not stills which most phone cameras handle very well.

@Dexcon Hi, that's exactly why i use my phone, because it's convenient. I've always meant to upgrade my Gopro Hero4 but I hardly ever used that, maybe a newer one with the better user window would get more use, I've always other things to spend my money on. The UHD video on this phone is more than good enough for me, I don't bother with the 8k, it's getting better with each phone release but still has work to do on it.

I've just walked to the shops & added a couple more, handheld of course I'm not carrying a tripod with me, setting it up at the side of the rd like a TikToker but i'm not sure it would make much difference with these pics,

Here's that link again with 3 x 200mp pics Samsung S23 ULTRA

PS, I think you've already seen this but for anyone who hasn't, this is my S23 ULTRA mounted on the windscreen of my van, UHD/4k on Youtube

@Dexcon - BMD Cam vs Phone? well - I guess it depends on what situation is.

But for my recent case where I just want to be extremely light during my long distance running - https://www.instagram.com/p/CsLyqcDBH2e/ - I depends only on that phone I bring. for this one it is Samsung A32.

But on 'more serious' - https://www.instagram.com/p/CqoxctPh0-T/ - Sony A6000 but oriented vertically (+ Insta360 One X2 for the intro shot). - as for this one, I can bring 'bigger cam' temporarily.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CqsNvjiLkoL/ - Insta360 One X2 only.

Anyway, when I googled 200 mp camera sample download, this Samsung S23 appear a lot, also followed by one Xiaomi phone model. - so I need to change to "200 mp professional camera sample download" and finally found an old post : https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/39014545 - I think it is using Nikon D3s, with AFS 70-200mm/2.8 VR2 - but merged / stitched images.

the same thing I did - just ZOOM!:

*Unfortunately I'm not sure how the ambience sound feels in Canyon... and Vegas Content has no audio related to Canyon (weird?)... - so can't dub it.

Gopro Hero4

My first GoPro Hero Black was 5 ... then 8. ... now 11. There is a significant difference between 11 back to 8 particularly in how 11 treats stablisation. 11 has much better stabilisation even with minimum stab settings than 8 which, with its minimum stab setting made a pan/tilt shot a painfully "slow" delay in movement - it was horrible. GoPro 11 doesn't suffer that "delayed' effect. But it's far from perfect - it's still poor in low light. And then 4K in 11 is HEVC only (no more MP4 choice) so there's the potential problem of how Vegas Pro 20 doesn't deal all that well with HEVC in some instances (notwithstanding I/O settings). For the first time, I've had to resort to proxies with GoPro video other than if first transcoding to MP4.

@set  ... purely a question about quality. If phone video quality is as good as BMD, Arriflex etc, then there'd be no need for anybody - professional, semi-pro or amateur - to go for pro cameras.

For overall quality, camera has better lens choices, image sensor, dynamic range, and specific controls. But I think this topic will always debating.

@Former user , I'm just watching again this short video, and the reason why I targeted to 1080p project, it is my largest resolution of monitor I have. And feels to me, the closest 'quite sharp' for this S23 Ultra photograph, would be maximum in 00:18 or 00:19. After that, becomes blurry.

@Former user https://www.dropbox.com/s/9b9ftmq7k5tf3gr/GX0070-01.MP4?dl=0

Play it at native resolution or 4K. It's playback is extraordinarily bad for me, given it's only 30fps, and also it has a GOP of 30 which Vegas is supposed to like, and also it contains no B frames, so very low complexity so should be very easy for any NLE to playback with GPU decoding

Former user wrote on 6/3/2023, 12:08 AM

@Former user Thanks off to bed so I'll play with it properly later. but yeah terrible playback, 1-15fps after 10 or more loop plays 😒 Magix Movie Studio 2023 plays it full fps first time,

I'm going to get one at the end of the month when Google pays me, my Hero4 is getting a bit long in the tooth 😂 I want to see if Mocha will straighten the lens distortion out,

"It's playback is extraordinarily bad for me..."

Former user wrote on 6/3/2023, 3:33 AM

@john_dennis My 4K timeline playback is similar to yours, but at native it remains bad. One thing to check is there was no automated pre-caching due to leaving playhead on the first frame. It's why I always display task manager, if I make such a mistake someone else will pick up on it.

This is a comparison of playback of 4K timeline at best quality and full resolution on Resolve/Capcut/Vegas. *Capcut only has a Quality/Performance setting for playback, no mention of resolution of preview.

Former user wrote on 6/3/2023, 12:09 PM

@john_dennis You shouldn't have to disable part of your PC to play a file, I haven't got an iGPU so playback has a 0 before the decimal if i do turn my GPU off,

john_dennis wrote on 6/3/2023, 12:20 PM

@Former user said: "You shouldn't have to disable part of your PC to play a file..."

I didn't disable part of my PC to play the file. I'm currently working on old projects that don't require significant GPU assist. I was just showing my results in the current state that I'm running my PC. These settings will remain in place until I get to the point in time when I bought my first UHD camera.

@Mohammed_Anis Sorry, I should've started a new post for this.

@Former user Hi, don't know what's going on, 🤷‍♂️

Me & my PC have been asleep, I woke to find someone had shared a Gopro file in a msg, it's different to yours in aspect ratio & fps, 3840x2160 50fps but most of the other stuff looks similar to me 🙈😂

But both yours & his play smooth as butter in Vegas 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️, yesterday yours played like 🐕, I haven't changed anything, but just to check there wasn't a temp file or proxy or summat hiding away & deleted everything in Appdata & anything else I could find, rebooted Vegas & yours still plays smooth... eh? 🤯

Yours on the left,

-----------

Yours in Mocha is fine

but his has blue lines on it, I'm still looking into that & will ask Boris,

Former user wrote on 6/4/2023, 8:56 PM

@Former user I was comparing 10bit HEVC from my phone and from the GoPro, they are similar but the GoPro files have an unusual P frame spike in the center of the GOP. It's unusual to me, but I"m sure it has a purpose and a name for those that know about this stuff.

So these 10bit HEVC files from GoPro play very poorly for me

This 10 HEVC file from Samsung phone plays much better

So I am wondering if Vegas doesn't like the P frame spikes or if it's completely unrelated
