Preview Jutter

AlanDogg wrote on 6/12/2017, 2:19 AM

Hi,
I have being trying to make a music video from 4k footage using Vegas Pro 13 64bit and found the Imac (Quadcore) system couldnt deal with it, So I have built a new system at the cost of £1700 and Im still having the same issues (Video jutterring frame freeze on preview) I have tried all the tricks suggested on the internet and still have the same issues. I thought 4k must still be the main issue so I converted my clips to HD 1920 × 1080 and its made a slight difference. If I had say 5 video clips on the timeline they are fine until I start cutting them (No effects just cuts) first 2 cuts are fine and the rest freeze while the audio remains fine. I have tried the same with adobe premier and magix movie maker still the same but prefer the simplicity of vegas. I have listed my spec below and would be grateful for any advice in resolving this issue as they video Im creating is to raise money for cancer which we want to release in around 2 months time.

Thanks for your time Alan

Where did you get your ideas for building that system? You have the wrong CPU and the wrong graphic card!

Since you already have a socket 2011-3, change the CPU to the fastest i7 you can afford and the motherboard supports, do NOT buy a Xeon again. Change graphic card to an AMD, minimum 290X max 480X and make sure your RAM can run at the max. frequency the CPU does support.

Edit: A i7-5820K would do fine if your motherboard supports it and the RAM can run at 2133.

Another option is to use a proxy workflow. That will however require to render all footage to a low resolution version which could take a long time on your system.

Hi Oldsmoke,
Thanks for your advice. I have purchased the following below so hopefully it will sort out my issues.

  Intel Core i7 5820K Socket 2011-3 £323.00
ASUS Radeon RX 460 Strix 4GB Graphics Card £104.98

Thanks Again

OldSmoke wrote on 6/12/2017, 12:33 PM

The RX460 is not a very powerful card. I wish you would have come back here first, before you purchase additional components. A 480 with 8GB would have been a much better option.

Agreed, switch the RX460 for RX480 8GB if the budget permits.

Also, here are some tips for smooth playback: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-make-my-video-preview-play-smoothly-in-vegas-pro--104624/

It ought to. Personally I would get Sapphire or Asus because of good experiences with those companies' products. Sapphire is usually mentioned/reported in a good light on this forum.

Hi Guys,
Finding it difficult to get hold of a new Asus or Sapphire RX480 8gb as its discontinued. The only ones I'm seeing are on Ebay second hand and a bit wary of second hand in case of GPU has being hammered :(

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)

OldSmoke wrote on 6/13/2017, 1:37 PM

I bought quite a couple of GPUs from eBay and didn't have issues with them. Just don't buy the cheapest as those are usually the overclocked gamer cards.

Let us know how all the new components perform.

Looks like the market is exploiting the demand for Sapphire RX480 in view of the fab change to RX580.

I paid ~$240 US for my Sapphire RX 480 and now it seems that the bit miners are buying all the 580s that leave the plant.

Will do guys and thanks for your help. Spent a bit more than I intended but its all for a good cause. Been shooting the video for the charity song using the iphone 6s in 4k along with the phantom 4, All in all its been fun, Never thought for a moment the cost from HD to 4k would be so much..but hey...you live and learn :)

PS: You can follow the project below if interested, Wrote the song myself and managed to get massive producer Ken Allardyce to mix it for us. Checkout the links below :)

I recommend to transcode all your footage to more Vegas friendly codec like XAVC-Intra. The free Sony Catalyst Browse can be of great help with that.

Thanks Oldsmoke, dumb question so here goes

1.How do I transcode to XAVC-Intra?

2. And is there any quality losss?

Many thanks :)

OldSmoke wrote on 6/13/2017, 3:55 PM

Use Catalyst Browse from Sony. There is a quality loss but you need very very good eyes to notice it.

Have you ever used handbrake? found it pretty good in the past for compression?

Many users here including myself use the vegas2handbrake workflow developed by one of the users on this forum.

...Been shooting the video for the charity song using the iphone 6s in 4k along with the phantom 4...

See this: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-to-convert-mov-video-e-g-iphone-to-mp4-for-vegas-pro--106154/ iPhone video losslessly wrapped from MOV to MP4 usually does well in Vegas. XAVC may do even better. Your original MOV iPhone footage probably won't work well, especially in 4K, because it relies on Quicktime.

Regarding Vegas2Handbrake and other final render methods, read this: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-improve-the-quality-of-my-avc-h-264-renders--104642/ The Vegas2Handbrake situation is summarized in section 4c.

Hi Guys,
Got new processor & Graphics card installed yesterday and machine is like Ben Johnson on steroids lol!

I have installed Vegas2Handbrake script as instructed here I have inserted a video clip at the end of timeline 1 sec for audio bug as instructed, but when I run the Vegas2handbrake script via the small white box with green tick on menu bar I get the following error (See attachment 1) I then tried again and got a second error (See attachment 2)

Help is much appreciated guys :)

Go back and read the 2nd link I posted in my last comment really carefully, in particular the 2 links in the last paragraph of that section 4c.

Hi Nick,
I have busted my ass all day with this and followed all steps and gone over them many times and no matter what I do I keep getting the same error (So bloody frustrating) I even reinstalled the OS fresh again incase there was something else I missed that was causing the issue. Getting near to giving up and trying somthing else. I have teamviewer and if anyone thinks they can sort the issue out for me then please do lend a hand as it will be much appreciated. The video I'm trying to edit is for charity and was hoping a bit of Karma would have kicked in and ironed things out but seems its not the case

thanks for all your help so far I really so appreciate it :)

Alan.

Alan,

Sorry I can't help with your problem, but I'm in the same situation as you with PCs, I want to make sure I understand what you did. You removed a Xeon CPU and installed an i7? I have a dual Xeon system and unhappy with previews in Vegas. I can change the graphics card but it never occurred to me that I could change the CPU and if I did, I assumed I would have to reinstall the OS. Can you confirm you swapped CPUs and didn't have to install the OS?

One more question, with a new CPU and GPU, do you really need to use Handbrake. If the new CPU and GPU gives you a machine on steroids, do you still have to change your workflow to include Handbrake?

Thanks,

Rich
