SURVEY: Would you upgrade to VP14 if...

Further to this, if a Vegas Pro 14 upgrade comes along in the autumn and has just these 13 changes...

- Robust GPU acceleration on all current AMD and NVIDIA GPUs giving decode speeds of all formats at least on a par with PPro and Resolve
- H.265 input and output
- ProRes input without Quicktime (no ProRes output)
- Option to automate the handling of video levels (but keep the option to edit and preview as it is now)
- 8k output
- True support for 4k monitors
- Ability to set "Disable Resample" as the default
- Video opacity and audio gain keyframeable on an event level, not just track level
- Warning that ripple edit is engaged (e.g. different colour timeline backgrounds or different shaped cursor)
- Vastly increased limit of velocity envelope
- Support 4K output on Decklink 4k Extreme
- Panasonic GH4 23.976p and 24p clips have extended video fixed
- Crash when renaming files in Vegas Explorer window fixed
- Nothing else changes. No new bugs.

... and the introductory pricing for the upgrade is USD149.95, would you upgrade? YES or NO?

If your answer is NO, briefly state ONE realistic further feature that might make you change your mind.

(p.s. This is posted in the spirit of helping the MAGIX team with priorities and market research. I have attempted to choose a reasonable number of popular and realistic features, including some that should be simple to implement)

I am willing to give my feedback, but...

Do you have contact with Magix? Will Magix or any key member of the production team see this thread and will it make any difference?

I get the feeling that there are so many similar threads here on the forum with similar topics and the only people reading them are Vegas users like you and I.

Unless you are an intermediate or PR for the Magix team, this will be another thread floating in space without getting noticed.

Nevertheless I admire your love for Vegas.

To answer your question in short, I have been a faithful customer of Sonic Foundry & SCS, If a nice version comes out, then I'll upgrade to it.
I am especially waiting for the long avaited 64 bit upgrade for Acid Pro 7. I'ts now 6 years overdue.

I will most likely upgrade anyway, if only to pump a bit of money into the new/old development team and show that there is at least one person still supporting it. I don't expect major changes so soon after acquisition, indeed I'd fear that too many changes too quickly implemented are likely to damage the product's stability. Unless they truly screw it up, I'm in for the long haul.
There again, i don't rely on Vegas for my living.

Nick Hope @ "(p.s. This is posted in the spirit of helping the MAGIX team with priorities and market research. I have attempted to choose a reasonable number of popular and realistic features, including some that should be simple to implement)"

Please take no offense Nick, but any changes SCS put into Vegas before the sale, and any changes Magix has planned for the autumn release are most likely in the can. The proposed release date is only a couple months away, maybe enough time to finish polishing off some major update features and little time to complete Alpha and Beta test. So I seriously doubt Magix will be considering any thing we suggest at this point that they haven't already committed to.

With that said to answer your question.....regardless of the list of features and fixes and the upgrade price, I will purchase the next Vegas Pro version released by Magix and most likely, as well, the new release of Movie Studio Platinum upgrade.

Thank You Gary for the reply, it is of course delightful you are monitoring and Magix is interested in the user base input.

Nick, there you go, not putting words in Gary's mouth, rather listing closely to his reply, I would interpret his reply to mean perhaps the majority of your list of 13! And in my words, I would add, most likely a few more items not in your list.

I'm excitedly awaiting Magix's first release and I'm 'all in'.

I appreciate what Nick has suggested, but unfortunately the list does NOT motivate me. Not because of his effort for trying to suggest a list, but for me, the specifics need to go in a different direction altogether, IMO, to make VegasPro fit into IMPROVED workflows.

My point is that SCS developed Catalyst to satisfy a specific need in the high-end Sony camera market. Part of that development revolves around checking camera takes with a form of color correction that could be transportable to an app like VegasPro. This is where the VegasPro has been historically very weak, and that cross workflow needs to be in place with - VegasPro app - to gain real favor in a stronger more robust marketplace.

Since Gary and Magix are truly listening on this, my answer is an
overwhelming YES Nick.
rmack350 wrote on 6/6/2016, 4:43 PM
My answer is a conditional Yes.

The main thing I need is the ability to read DVCPro HD quicktime files. I use DVFilm's Raylight Decoder codec for this. So essentially it's a question for me of what's done with Quicktime in Vegas. If a quicktime fix is implemented but it messes with third party Quicktime codecs then that's a problem. If that were the case then I'd hope that continuing to use Quicktime would be an option.

Answer, likely but depends. Currently I have Vegas Pro 13 Suite; when I purchased it, the suite part included Hitfilm Pro 3, Sound Forge Pro 11, extra NewBlue software and a few other items. Thus when the new Vegas 14 becomes available, my questions would be:

1)would it still work with the Vegas 13 suite software and/or 2)would there be a Vegas 14 suite option available at the same time (just as SCS offered various options when purchasing Vegas 13 from Vegas Edit to Suite) and if so what software would be included. I'd like to see a BCC version of Pro 14 suite.

Additionally, the current version of Vegas Pro includes DVDA and I'd like to see improvements there. Perhaps, if not ready, Magix could indicate that a new DVDA would be available as a free upgrade to Vegas 14 purchasers when coded/tested (maybe first quarter of 2017?).

Magix managers must have a lot on their minds right now; I'd suggest that they communicate what they plan to do, go slow, and release software when ready/tested. Patience may be the watchword here. I'm delighted that Vegas will live on but I don't expect everything at once. The list provided would be a great start for version 14.0.

Easy there guys...You will get some of what Nick asks for, but his is only one voice. We're listening to everyone and will sincerely try to deliver something you can all appreciate and be happy with. Keep in mind that the next release is not just about new features. It won't be perfect for everyone, but it will be a step in the right direction that will hopefully prove our renewed dedication and we'll continue on from there.

Thanks for your feedback Gary,

The main and only crash I encouter with Vegas is this known issue:

Yeah, sorry, I really hate this bug too. I've spent DAYS trying to find and fix it, but have failed so far. Frustratingly, every time I look at it with the debugger, it doesn't happen..."

Vegas v11 & 12 - crash new folder - when fixed?
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/Forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=844883

'Vegas 13 crashes on "create new folder" anyone else?'
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/showmessage.asp?messageid=902628V

I can never make a new folder via Vegas when saving screenshots.
It would be great if that can be fixed.

And automated tracking would be great but that might be a big undertatking to do in the next release.

Looking forward to meeting you at the next IBC Gary!

All but "Robust GPU acceleration"

IMO that is the cause of most of the problems after Vegas Pro 9

"Easy there guys..."

Thanks Gary. User requests are often very personal needs. I think most of us realize that development for Vegas 14 probably stretches back to before the release of Vegas 13.

Fixing bugs, making things bulletproof, adding useful features, and making Vegas more maintainable for your own developers would all be good goals. And as V-guy is probably trying to say, better interoperability with current outside software and hardware should always be a high priority.

The list is not bad and very similar to the points that came up in the other threads. What I miss here is a clear LUT support both in 8bit and 32bit floating point. I miss improved grading features (what includes to rework both luminance and color correction filters but also be able to adjust tools like waveform and histogram to 10bit). I see an improved codec support for H.265 what is fine, but still think that we will need both H.264 and H.265 with 10bit 422 as delivery formates for the upcoming 10bit age. And to grade HDR we may end up with the need to set tools like waveform also to edit for upcoming HDR monitors with higher nit figures.

Maybe we will not need all of that in the upcoming upgrade - and it could be splitted up to an defined list that will be delivered also in 2017 step by step, what has become popular to adjust development capacity in a better way (seen by Atomos or Grass Valley for example). With such an agreed development path I would be also be willing to spend even more for an upgrade - Grass Valley charged for the upgrade of Edius something near to 300 Euro including local tax, but with a defined development path.

Desktop: PC AMD 3960X, 24x3,8 Mhz * GTX 3080 Ti (12 GB)* Blackmagic Extreme 4K 12G * QNAP Max8 10 Gb Lan * Resolve Studio 18 * Edius X* Blackmagic Pocket 6K/6K Pro, EVA1, FS7

Laptop: ProArt Studiobook 16 OLED * internal HDR preview * i9 12900H with i-GPU Iris XE * 32 GB Ram) * Geforce RTX 3070 TI 8GB * internal HDR preview on the laptop monitor * Blackmagic Ultrastudio 4K mini

HDR monitor: ProArt Monitor PA32 UCG-K 1600 nits, Atomos Sumo

Others: Edius NX (Canopus NX)-card in an old XP-System. Edius 4.6 and other systems

"(what includes to rework both luminance and color correction filters but also be able to adjust tools like waveform and histogram to 10bit)."

I'm going to assume you mean to be able to work in 10-bit value scales, which leads me to another thought. One thing I find difficult to deal with is the 32-bit float scales of color correction tools. There are many times when I'd really like to see 8-bit values rather than values between 0 and 1, although maybe it'd serve everyone's needs to show dual values simultaneously. So perhaps if you're working with 10bit media in a 32bit float project then maybe some means of seeing both values at the same time would be useful. For the most part I think grading issues are a larger project and shouldn't be addressed piecemeal. Good grading tools would be a big selling point in Vegas.
