I can't even open QuickTime anymore for some reason. It says Please install apple application support. What do I do now?

- and I still have no idea whether it's using my GPU for playback or not.

You can check this with the Sensors/GPU Load of the tool GPU-Z.

Well, apparently not according to GPUZ which is odd considering before reinstalling, VP13 saw the graphics card. A fresh reinstall seems to have stopped that from occurring this time around. And the trial of VP 14 is the same. PPro CS6 sees the card and is using it for playback and renders. Vegas Pro apparently is still hit and miss on seeing an older nVidia Quadro card

Has that card ever worked within Vegas? It seems be outside the spec for Vegas.

Yes it has been seen before this current reinstall - hence my confusion...

I would:

  1. Do the first 3 things I suggested in my previous comment, trying to open clips in Vegas after each, then...
  2. Reboot
  3. Clean registry with CCleaner Free (backup the registry when it prompts you, and preferably make a system image backup of your PC first using something like Aomei Free)
  4. Reboot
  5. Clean registry again with CCleaner Free
  6. Test opening your footage again in Vegas
  7. Install Quicktime from here if you still need it
  8. Test opening your footage again in Vegas
  9. Do the 4th and 5th things in my previous comment
  10. Post Vegas File Properties and preferably a sample if you still need help

Sorry, but my answer is this:

1. The first item on Nick's list should be delivered as a free update, not a new version upgrade. The software in its current state is simply unusable, for God's sake!

2. If indeed I get "- Robust GPU acceleration on all current AMD and NVIDIA GPUs giving decode speeds of all formats at least on a par with PPro and Resolve" free, I will happily pay the usual upgrade price for the new version!

Otherwise, my answer is a definite "No". An not only that: I will apply for full return of my VP14 upgrade price!

When Magix took over Vegas, I looked at their other products and bought a copy of Xara Web Designer Premium. This is really cool software that looks like it has great potential. But when I then TRIED to register and get access to their on-line forums, for whatever reason, the registration process failed; and no matter what I tried after that, I could no longer register my copy of Xara to access the product forums.

This is bad enough, but after I couldn't register on their forums I filed a support request. After a couple days of not hearing from them, the next time I checked my support ticket, I found it had been closed and marked as resolved. So I re-opened it and asked the same question again. After a couple more days, it was again closed marked as resolved. This went on four more times; and when it was repeatedly closed/marked resolved I just gave up.

So, what does this have to do with the question of what would sway me to purchase Vegas Pro v14? This tells me that Magix customer support is starting out as bad as what Sony customer support devolved into after many years of Vegas ownership. I don't want to start down a path of tying myself to a company that I can't count on to help me out with something as simple as fixing a simple product registration issue on their web forums. Without adequate customer support for a product as complex and sophisticated as Vegas Pro, I will simply stay away from the product.

@Piotr - It's been one of the biggest reasons I've stayed so long with PPro CS6 - It's been rock solid save for the issues with not being able to send a timeline to Media Encoder - a recent development. I'm still debating though given VP13 seems to be hit and miss with seeing my GPU, which I only want for preview monitoring. PPro can playback full rez of the timeline and not drop any frames - I can't say that about Vegas. And TBH, I'm getting better IQ on my renders and color grading in PPro than Vegas. Not sure why and will have to test more (PITA that this is)

To add a little balance.... While I agree that GPU acceleration needs updating, the software in its latest form is perfectly usable for me. I'm working with native (GH4) UHD footage on my timeline and I have GPU acceleration turned off. System specs in my profile.

@Nick - If I were on my desktop - wouldn't be an issue as I could just swap out for the AMD card I have, but I'm really pushing more/having to work more in mobile editing for my work and that's not an option for swapping out the GPU. Still testing and comparing as my shoot today was rescheduled due to bad weather. Right now - I'm still scratching my head at how things are done in Vegas but I'm guessing that will change as I use it more.

Well, I did upgrade to v.14, from v.12. I never upgraded to v.13 because at the time I owned a terrible Asus laptop which could not even load v.13. When that laptop died, I upgraded to a truly great MSI laptop (GT72s 6QE Dominator Pro G) and tried v.14, which this laptop ran without a hitch, so I updated and am glad I did.

This laptop is technically a gamer’s laptop, but having worked in the computer industry I noticed that gamer’s computers tend to be the best computers for video editing. Of course, the first thing I did with it was turn off the colors on the keyboard, but other than that I’m happy with both, my laptop and my Vegas Suite 14.

@Cliff - Don't obsess too much over the GPU. I don't even have mine turned on in Vegas (although I accept it helps having a desktop with fast CPU and loads of RAM). There are lots of other ways to make your timeline more responsive. NOT TROLLING...

i've tried using my various laptops (incl a pretty umphy i7) to edit video and have usually given up in despair.

ok, i use them for logging and rough cutting but... how can you deal with the abysmal screen space, the lack of proper monitoring, etc., etc., i mean throw scopes on there and well....

maybe i'm just too old to adapt?

in love and peace

Has all to do with current living space... If I could use my desktop I would... May still see if I can somehow shoehorn it into where I'm living now but doesn't look hopeful... Hence why it's laptop editing for me at the present time...

I don't even miss a desktop PC.

I use a very limited Dell laptop but when at home I plug in a large monitor for more space and more accurate display. Best of both worlds I guess

This is my current setup

It's not ideal but it takes up alot less space and I'm slowly getting use to it

I don't even miss a desktop PC.

The only thing I miss is the horsepower - my desktop has a hexcore processor and 24GB RAM with a 2GB graphics card. If I were able to make a GPU upgrade to my laptop - this would probably be a non-issue - I'm still debating the final transition to Vegas for all post work but I'm getting there - I think...
