Track shadow issue with GPU accelerated

Mickael-Lacoste wrote on 12/26/2021, 5:00 PM

Hi all, this post about a big bug when using GPU accelerated (AMD Radeon 6600) on track shadows.

Here is one frame render without GPU accelerated:

and with GPU accelerated (I mean the setting on Video tab, GPU video accelerated set to Optimal - Advanced Micro Devices, Inc (gfx1032)

and it's related with track shadows. I have a main video full screen and two tracks with shadows enabled, one upper left and the other bottom right. But with shadow enabled, render with GPU (preview or render) is buggy.

Please help, I'm a little bit disappointed with it, I bought a graphic card (instead of Intel onboard) in order to have enhancements but ...

My graphic card is AMD Radeon RX 6600, AMD Driver is 21.10.2 (but the same with the last driver 21.12.1) and I'm running the last Vegas Pro 19.0 build 458 on Windows 10 21H2 19044.1415.

Thanks @john_dennis, I've updated my initial post with AMD driver and Windows release.

Is there someone of Vegas support team to help ?!

As your circumstances are fairly specific to your setup, please consider lodging a support ticket to the Vegas support team via https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/support/search/

Please take into account that this is primarily a peer-to-peer user forum and, given that there has only been one response nearly 2 weeks ago (which asked for more information to which you haven't responded with the detail requested in the then provided link - other than your computer's specs which is appreciated), suggests that it is not a widespread problem.

You're right, I've just opened a ticket. My issue is probably related to an issue with driver and it occurs when using more than one track with shadow, perhaps not the main usecase. Thanks for your feedback. I was thinking that Vegas support had a look to this forum, bad idea.

@Mickael-Lacoste Hi, prob not any help as my system is different but i tried turning on/off GPU, changing as many settings like File I/O etc as i could, but couldn't screw up the image like in your pic, all it did was slow down playback & render, As mentioned there must be something going on at your end.

You can put your system details in My Profile - Signature by clicking your icon at the top, it will always be there at the bottom of your comments, look at the bottom of peoples comments, + signature

@Mickael-Lacoste Don't know if this is relevant but I've seen an issue with amd 6000-series gpus that affects the bordering of pip fx windows which can be remedied by strategic placement of a bezier mask. The 5000-series used to do the black-out thing I see here and the same work-around remedied that too.

It's a good idea, thanks. I had a look to this workaround and finally, I think that instead of using track motion with shadows to create PiP, I will use track effects, it seems to be ok. Thanks.

Somes news ... ticket opened, sample project provided, not reproduced by support team but it's normal, it's related to AMD optimization. Issue should be raised to dev team and workaround is ... disable GPU optimization. Ok, but it's a workaround, I hope that dev team will perform some investigations. I bought this video card in order to have a more confortable use of Vegas Pro.

Just an update for this bug that is always still there ... support answer is to disable AMD optimizations ... not acceptable ! I'm afraid that my bug will never be addressed, so sad.

@Mickael-Lacoste

Have you tried dividing to conquer?

Create a nested project containing your graphics with shadows

Render the nested project to a lossless intermediate with Alpha Channel.

Replace the nested project in the master project with the lossless intermediate.

I can also reproduce this bug. However, it has never bothered me before. I would paste the images with Picture in Picture and then add a shadow or other highlighting with Layer Dimensionality FX.This also works with my RX5700 GPU and is well customizable.

It's a good idea, why not. My current workaround is to use PIP effects instead of Track motion shadow. It's less friendly but works better.

@Mickael-Lacoste Another workaround is to use Event Pan/Crop on the clip to do the scaling while using Track Motion for just the shadow and/or glow. If I use pip-fx with vp19, I see the partial borders bug with a 6900 or 5700.

Hey, great tips, it works fine. Not very user-friendly but perhaps more than using PIP effects. Many thanks.
