VEGAS Effects is part of the VEGAS POST Suite for post production that comprises VEGAS Pro, VEGAS Effects & VEGAS Image.

Release notes for updates are taken from the "See what's new" window that can be opened during the installation, or for upgrades from the update history for the corresponding version of HitFilm Pro.

VEGAS Effects updates follow and are similar to HitFilm Pro updates.

I assume the updates in Hitfilm Pro versions 14.1 & 14.2 were largely included in VEGAS Effects Update 2.

VEGAS Effects Update 3 (version 1.3.9931.38487) 27th May 2020

This update is based on HitFilm Pro version 14.3.

This update focuses on bug fixes, fine-tuning the default options of the export process for a better user experience and improving the performance of hardware decoding on Windows systems.

Enhancements

  • The File >  Export option now defaults to exporting the entire contents of the timeline, rather than exporting the In/Out area.
  • The YouTube 1080p export preset now uses a Level of 5.1, for improved compatibility with older video players.

Fixes

  • Improved stability of AMD and NVIDIA hardware decoding.
  • Improved compatibility with AAC media, so it imports correctly.
  • Improved compatibility with ProRes files, so the ProRes 4444 codec now imports correctly.
  • The performance and stability of FBX models in the software has been improved.
  • Motion blur now works correctly with FBX models.
  • Improved a rare stability issue involving deleting media from the Media panel.
  • Composite shots deleted in the Media panel no longer appear in the Viewer, or cause stability issues.
  • Canceling the render of a composite shot containing ambient occlusion no longer causes stability issues.

  • Editing the timeline location of keyframes on a parented layer no longer causes stability issues.

  • Exported files will no longer be removed from your hard drive without warning when the software is closed.
  • Changing the configuration of multiple displays no longer causes dialogs to open offscreen and be inaccessible.
  • Composite shots containing the Speed/Duration tool now render correctly.
  • Chromatic Aberration is now downsampling correctly.
  • When a user switches timelines, the scopes now update correctly to represent the contents of the current timeline.
  • Pre-rendering a composite shot now accurately includes all frames, without duplicates.
  • The font used in Parade Scopes now supports High DPI / Retina displays.

VEGAS Effects 2.0.10327.53304 3rd August 2020

Notes taken from the update history for HitFilm Pro 15.0, which VEGAS Effects 2.0 is based on. There may be some differences.

Highlights

  • A new Preference option allows the root folders of a new layer to be open by default, in the controls panel.
  • Additional plugin presets have been added to the Grid and Lightning & Electricity effects.
  • The zoom options in the Viewer panel now allow a wider range of zoom levels.
  • Added the ability to export audio using the WAV format.
  • Added the GoPro FX Reframe effect, for fully customizing the framing of your 360º footage.
  • Added a Track Select tool, to select everything to the left or right of the playhead.
  • New mask shapes allow you to create and customize Rounded Rectangle, Polygon, and Star shaped masks.
  • The Crop / Pan & Zoom effect allows you to crop the contents of a clip, and animate the crop to control which area is shown.
  • Four new templates for lower thirds have been added: Banners, Flashy Double, Peeking with Line, and Smooth Blocks.
  • Added a Motion Track effect, for easily attaching a timeline object to a specific element in the scene.
  • Added the Color Adjustment effect to allow a range of selected colors to be shifted (originally designed for Imerge Pro).
  • The new Auto Stabilizer effect provides easy smoothing of motion in handheld video clips.

Enhancements

  • Image sequences can now be imported by dragging one or more images from the sequence into the Media panel.
  • Image Sequences can now be imported using the Import button, by selecting a single image from the sequence.
  • Import image sequences by selecting a file or a range of files in a folder.
  • The layout of the menus in the top menu bar has been improved.
  • Paste Attributes now asks before duplicating the attributes on the source.
  • The Text tool now allows multiple customizable outlines.
  • Upgraded the X-audio component of the installer, to eliminate an error some users were seeing on install.
  • CTRL+W now closes the current composite shot, and CTRL+Shift+W closes all open composite shots.
  • The zoom controls for scaling the timeline have been refactored and improved.
  • Improved performance of embedded composite shots and grade layers through caching.
  • The graphic interface for the Curves control is now available in two sizes, small and large.

Bug Fixes

  • The error messages shown when an export folder is not available are now more accurate.

  • The shortcut to convert a media file to a composite shot (CTRL+M) has been enabled in the Media panel.

    Summary

    • This update contains assorted stability and usability improvements, including improvements to the layer picker controls.

    Fixes

    • Boris Continuum plugins are no longer loaded to prevent a stability issue on launch.
    • Improved OpenGL implementation to prevent systems which exceed the minimum requirements from displaying an error which says they do not meet minimum requirements.
    • Importing faulty preset files no longer causes stability issues.
    • Layers whose visibility is disabled are no longer ignored by the Set Matte effect.
    • Particle systems referencing a composite shot as an animated texture now render the correct texture frames.
    • The last created point in a mask can now be repositioned correctly.
    • Switching timelines while a tracker is active no longer causes stability issues.
    • Layer pickers now update properly when the effect containing the layer picker is moved to a new layer.
    • Layer pickers now update correctly when the layer stack or layer order is changed.

    Further bug fixes listed for HitFilm Pro 15.2, which VEGAS Effects 2.2 is based on. These may or may not apply to VEGAS Effects:

    • The export preset dialog now only commits changes once the changes are confirmed.
    • Transitions applied to composite shot objects on the editor timeline are now rendered correctly.
    • Select All on an editor timeline which includes a text template no longer causes stability issues.
    • The folder containing the Camera Tracker has been renamed to Foundry to correctly reflect the developer's branding.
    • Uninstalling one version of HitFilm from a system where two versions are installed no longer removes the interface font needed for the remaining version. (PC)

    Summary

    This release introduces several major new features, including custom light flares, voiceover recording, HEVC/H.265 support, and support for GLTF 3D models, including physically-based-rendering. Various interface improvements and bug fixes are also included.

    Highlights

    • Added support for software decoding of HEVC/H.265 video files, and on hardware for systems with supported GPUs.
    • The new Custom Light Flares effect introduces over 60 new presets, and a new interface for building your own custom flares.
    • The GLTF format is now supported for importing 3D models and animation.
    • Voiceover audio can now be recorded directly in HitFilm, through the Media panel or the File menu.
    • The new Motion Lock effect allows effects to be applied directly to a video layer and be tracked to the movement within the video.

    Enhancements

    • Export Frame functionality has been extensively reworked, with more options and greater control.
    • The new Remove Unused command deletes all unused assets from the Media panel with a single command.
    • Commands for importing media and recording voiceover have been added to the File menu.
    • The new Export menu provides access to all export functions in a single location.
    • All spinbox values in the interface can now be edited by click-dragging with the mouse.
    • The keyboard shortcuts for adjusting the scale of the timeline can now also be used on the Controls panel's internal timeline.
    • The motion blur settings now use a default shutter phase of -90.
    • 3D model formats which support animation no longer generate animation files on import, unless the model includes animation data.
    • The names of imported 3D animation assets are now displayed in the Media panel.
    • The default radius for Highpass Sharpen was adjusted, and the blend modes have been reordered based on intensity.
    • The GoPro FX Reframe effect has been renamed and is now GoPro Lens Reframe.

    Fixes

    • Improved handling of hardware decoding, to prevent stability issues with certain ProRes files.
    • MPEG-1 .ts video files now import correctly.
    • Improved the handling of audio files containing floating-point PCM values.
    • Merging audio from two recordings of the same event with noticeable variations has been improved.
    • Media files containing pre-multiplied alpha channels now render correctly in the Trimmer, the Media panel, and the Editor thumbnails.
    • Playback in the Trimmer now includes the last frame of the video.
    • The audio sample rate for new composite shots created via the Start panel matches the audio sample rate of the project.
    • Creating a composite shot from an audio-only asset now uses the project resolution, rather than a resolution of 1x1.
    • Textures for 3D models support linear color once again.

    • The controls for the Atomic Particle effect now update correctly when the effect is applied to a 3D model.
    • The GoPro Lens Reframe interface is now resized to fit the selected Projection preset.
    • Dragging to reposition the view in GoPro Lens Reframe now moves the view in the expected direction.
    • Eliminated an artifact at the center of the GoPro Lens Reframe effect when running on Intel 600-series graphics.
    • Exporting a timeline which contains the Auto Stabilizer effect no longer causes stability issues.
    • Saving a project no longer prevents the font in the Text effect from being changed.
    • Exporting a project no longer stops the Text effect from updating in the Viewer.
    • The export button is now correctly disabled when there is nothing to export.
    • Reduced the bitrates for Instagram export presets.
    • Selection of a folder in the Export panel presets list is now clearly indicated.
    • The Export Now > Contents command now creates a folder at the chosen location, if the folder doesn't already exist.
    • The export preview now properly renders when the Export panel is re-opened during an ongoing export task.
    • Switching projects while an export task is ongoing now stops the export.

    VEGAS Effects 2.3 appears to be based on HitFilm Pro 16.0, with at least some additional updates from HitFilm Pro Version 2021.1 also included.     Highlights

    • A new Media Proxy system allows users to generate proxies to improve performance of media files.
    • An automated render cache improves performance of timelines, replacing RAM preview.
    • Video files in the Blackmagic RAW (.braw) format are now supported.
    • Cameras in the FBX format can now be imported from third party software.
    • Cameras can now be exported for use in other software, using the FBX format.
    • The new Super Glow plugin provides additional controls and improved falloff, for less artificial looking results than standard glow effects.
    • The new Cosmos plugin creates animated starfield patterns with connecting lines, for constellation style visuals.
    • The new Electro plugin creates animated circuit board style visuals.
    • The new Page Curl effect provides customizable, animated page turn effects.

    Enhancements

    • Upgrades to the text layout and text rendering engines provide improved results in all text-based effects.
    • The pen mask tool has been improved, for greater control over closing and re-opening masks.
    • Improved rendering of motion paths for layer positioning in the Viewer.
    • Scopes can now be disabled during playback to improve performance.
    • The interface for the GoPro Lens Reframe effect now matches the interface used in other hosts.
    • The default layout has now been updated to include the Controls panel.

    • HEVC support has been improved, and now handles a wider range of files.

    • Adding 1440p video to a 1080p timeline no longer causes unexpected blurring.
    • Improved the rendering of spotlights with soft edges, in shadow areas.
    • Opening a project which contains a merged video file that is now offline no longer causes stability issues.

    Summary

    This update includes improved support for Blackmagic RAW files and OFX plugin loading, along with other bug fixes.

    • Downsampling Blackmagic RAW files does not introduce artefacts.

    This update includes new Rough Edges, Water Caustics, Edge Distortion and Pencil Sketch effects, improvements to the quality of YouTube export presets and a range of enhancements and bug fixes.

    Highlights

    • The new Rough Edges effect adds organic variation to the edges of the alpha channel of a clip.
    • The new Water Caustics effect procedurally generates animated patterns of reflection and refraction, to simulate looking through water.
    • The new Edge Distortion effect creates line boil, adding movement to the lines or edges within your clip.
    • The new Pencil Sketch effect makes your clip look as if it was drawn with pencil on paper.
    • Improved the quality of timeline cache renders.
    • Users can now choose whether the timeline cache is encoded and decoded with software or GPU hardware.
    • The YouTube export presets have been updated to improve the quality of exported files.
    • The prompt for automatic proxy creation no longer appears when creating a new project.

    Enhancements

    • Clicking a motion path keyframe now selects the property containing the keyframe.
    • Multiple point layers can now be selected in the Viewer by dragging a rubber band selection.
    • When multiple points of a mask are selected, individual points can now be removed from the selection.
    • Improved support for models in the GLB format.
    • Improved font compatibility for text rendering.
    • Changing proxies now triggers the unsaved state for the project.
    • Exiting a project while proxies are being created now triggers a warning.
    • Plugins now show more quickly after initial installation.
    • In the Super Glow effect, the Grain Frequency setting now defaults to a value of 1.0.
    • Added a user-friendly message when users attempt to render Quality proxies at incompatible resolutions.
    • Added a user-friendly message when users attempt to export to H.264 with incompatible resolutions.
    • Updated the text in the DPI Scaling checkbox.
    • Translated the Motion Lock effect.

    Fixes

    • In the Trimmer, the Scale to Fit option is now available for images.
    • Creating a light no longer blocks the creation of masks.
    • Transforming the X position of a layer from a tracked point no longer causes stability issues.
    • Applying tracking info for a single position axis no longer affects both axes.
    • Pre-renders that are no longer valid are now discarded, rather than showing an alert triangle.
    • Improved performance of loading the Cache options panel when the cache is large.
    • Keyboard shortcuts in the Viewer can now be used after creating a composite shot.
    • Motion paths now update more accurately in the Viewer when the view is panned and when paths are edited.
    • Motion paths now update more accurately in the Viewer when switching between timelines.
    • The Viewer selection tool icon now updates correctly when you press and release the right-click mouse button.
    • Pressing the middle mouse button while the Hand tool is active no longer switches to the selection tool.
    • Using the Viewer navigation tools no longer causes the selection to be lost.
    • Using the Viewer navigation tools with the Mask tool active no longer renders the mask in selection mode.
    • Masks can once again be edited non-uniformly by holding shift while editing.
    • When a plane is set to receive reflections, converting the plane to a comp no longer breaks the reflections.
    • Changing the resolution of a timeline after caching no longer causes render issues on systems with Intel UHD 630 graphics.
    • Saving a project with Auto Stabilizer applied to a large video file no longer causes stability issues.
    • Auto Stabilizer once again shows the frame analysis progress in the Viewer.
    • Auto Stabilizer does not display the control buttons in the Viewer until the initial analysis is completed.
    • The Derez effect now renders correctly when preceded by the Set Matte effect.
    • The Bevel effect now renders correctly when applied after the Bend effect.
    • Improved the rendering accuracy of the Grading Transfer effect.
    • Eliminated a rendering glitch that would appear in the Surface Studio effect at high color depths.
    • Eliminated a rendering glitch when using the Cosmos effect with Lens Blur and a plane layer at high color depths.
    • Improved alignment in the Half Tone effect to prevent unwanted rendering artifacts at the frame edges.
    • In the End Credits Crawl effect, the fonts for Roles and Names can now be edited independently.
    • The End Credits Crawl effect now consistently has a single element when added.
    • Canceling an existing export queue item when an Export Now task is rendering no longer freezes the queue.
    • Export of timelines containing OFX plugins are now less likely to time out, thanks to optimizations in the plugin loading process.

    VEGAS Effects 5.0.2.0 - 14th August 2023

    Summary

    This update focuses mainly on stability with several fixes for existing effects, hardware decoding and eliminates several render glitches and crashes. It also brings improvements to text with a new solid background option and an improved color picker.

    Enhancements

    • Proxy downsampling is now factored into viewer downsampling.
    • Text can now inlcude a solid color background behind it.
    • Hardware decoding and encoding on Intel Iris Xe Max is now disabled due to driver issues
    • VEGAS Effects 5 now integrates with VEGAS Pro 21
    • You can now triple-click on text to select an entire line.
    • New presets in the Vector Stroke effect make use of improvements to the effect.
    • New Start Shapes and End shapes are available in the Vector Stroke effect.
    • New Taper Controls in the Vector Stroke effect allow the stroke to be tapered along the length of the path.
    • An improved color picker has been implemented.

    Fixes

    • Disabled hardware decoding for AMD drivers where the feature is broken (AMD Adrenalin 22.8.1 to 22.11.2).
    • Masks using Feather and Roundness settings no longer flicker when you adjust the Scale.
    • The Curves effect no longer alters footage at its default settings.
    • Improved font support in text-based effects.
    • 2D Text layers are no longer affected by Light layers unless a geometry effect is applied.
    • Moving interface containers between displays with different scaling levels no longer causes stability issues.
    • The Surface Studio effect no longer renders flickering for instances using multiple textures of different resolutions.
    • The Neon Path effect now renders in the correct position when applied to a grade layer.
    • Adding a drop shadow effect several times to a masked layer no longer changes the layer position.
    • Improved rendering of the Connection preset for the Vector Stroke effect when applied to text.
    • Rendering of the Vector Stroke effect has been improved.
    • The Sitka font family no longer causes an infinite loop when scrolling through the font list.
    • Changing a property value for a text selection now updates correctly, regardless of what is selected.
    • Adding a single frame of high framerate video to a lower framerate timeline no longer crashes.
    • Moving a modal window of the interface between mixed resolution displays no longer causes stability issues.
    • Several other crashes reported by users through the crash report tool.
    • .FBX camera data created in 3DS Max displays a dialog on import, if there were no cameras to import in the .FBX file.
    • Color picker dialog now works correctly on HighDPI secondary displays. (Windows only)
    • The default behavior when applying Stroke and Vector Stroke to text clips has been improved.
    • Deleted masks no longer persist in the Path dropdown of the Vector Stroke effect.
    • Improved the X rotation alignment of text within the Rotate Geometry effect.
    • The Previous Frame button is now available any time the playhead is not on frame 0 of the timeline.
    • Updated the order in which controls are selected within the New Project menu when you tab through them.
