VEGAS Feature Wishlist - August 2024

fr0sty wrote on 8/6/2024, 7:15 PM

This is going to be a monthly feature wishlist thread where you can post new features you want to see added to VEGAS Pro.

ONLY POST NEW FEATURES, NOT SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING EXISTING FEATURES

What qualifies as a new feature?

Example: "Integrated Masking - Masking that directly integrates with the preview window." - We cannot currently do this in VEGAS, so it qualifies as a new feature.

What doesn't qualify as a new feature?

"Please improve stability"

"Please make GPU processing faster"

"Please improve subtitling"

Those posts will be hidden from this thread to keep it tidy, but they are still welcome on this forum.

Posts for improvement requests can go in this thread instead.

If you have multiple feature requests, include them in the same post, please, I'll separate them into individual posts when adding them to the poll. It makes it easier on me to not have to dig through as many pages of posts.

My first suggestion:

Integrated Masking

Think how masking works in VEGAS Effects or After Effects. You don't add an effect or open the pan/crop window. You just click on either a shape mask and draw it out directly on the preview monitor, or you click on the bezier pen tool and draw your mask in, also directly on the preview window. This would also provide an opportunity to integrate smart masking directly into the preview window. To select which clip you want to mask, just click an event on the timeline, similar to how you do event-level color grading.

From there, the masks will be integrated into a drop-down menu underneath each track. You can easily add new masks here, rename masks, and control things about each mask such as scale, opacity, rotation, position, and a button to open the motion tracking dialogue for that mask.

My third and last.
Gosh, get some nice lower thirds templates going! I have to often go to Davinci Resolve or Premiere Pro to get nice titling...Newblue just doesn't cut it.
In the corporate editing world, lower thirds is essential!

Segregation of file types in Explorer like in Windows Explorer, Right click - Sort by & Group by would be nice.

Since the editor is positioned as a professional (which, among other things, is noticeable in the comments), you can think about adding the ability to write your own shaders (for effects, transitions, etc.). Judging by the questions and requests on the forum, it will be possible to simply add what you need. I do not know what language is used here for shaders (Cg or something similar) and what API vegas offers for it. If it is available somewhere and you can show it, I will be glad.

Anything from this list.

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/vegas-pro-feature-requests--134374/?page=1

These polls are useless. The Vegas team knows what we want. I find it unfair to prioritize new requests over those from previous years.

I will give an example. I keep waiting for this.....

- Change Time Stretch Ctrl + mouse to 0-1000%

- export subtitle track to SRT and SUB (as in Vegasaur)

- add more effects for transitions and all keyframe (as in Blufftitler, Vegasaur Tweener and many others)

https://vegasaur.com/tweener

- Pan / Crop - unlimited object zooming out

It's a small change, but a big revolution for editing.

A very simple thing that I already asked for a long time ago.

Memorize the size of the Explorer thumbnails (or all tabs)
The thumbnails always appear with the original small size.
When opening VEGAS the thumbnails should appear with the same size as when closing VEGAS

I find it unfair to prioritize new requests over those from previous years.

If you read what the goal of this is, you'd realize that isn't what this is about. It doesn't matter how new or old the request is, it matters how many people in the community want to see it implemented. It gives the developers an idea of which features are the most wanted by the community. Every request you've ever made, now matter how old, is welcome to be shared. That said, I'm not going to go digging through other threads to find your requests, so you have to post them here if you want to add them to the poll. I've added the ones you did share in your post.

Look into GL transitions in VEGAS, which let you create custom GLSL transitions. That said, since coding custom effects is not yet supported, I've added your suggestion to the poll.

It would be great if Vegas released an update every month. Ten of our new implemented ideas every month. I know it's a utopia.

Some of our ideas do not require several years of waiting. No?

fr0sty wrote on 8/7/2024, 6:27 AM

If you want VEGAS to be a buggy mess, that would be a great idea, but if you want it to not crash every time, we need time to thoroughly test every single change that is made. Even months of testing sometimes proves to not be enough, and patches have to be released. Sometimes turning a bolt here breaks something over there, and sometimes it only breaks something for someone who has a very specific combination of hardware and software installed, so even seemingly simple changes must be thoroughly tested.

Some ideas will have to wait longer than others, simply because there's other features that are more requested, or because the feature will take a very long time to implement with the resources the team has, and the team has to prioritize which features it is able to do with the time and resources they have to work with. That's part of what this is to help with, making it easier for the development team to see which issues are the most requested, so they can more easily choose which ones they know the community wants that they can achieve with the time and resources they have.

Don't forget to go vote on your ideas, as well as other people's ideas, in the poll! It is pinned to the top of the forum.

I would also like to post a video demonstration so you can see how important my previous suggestions are for editing.

- Change Time Stretch Ctrl + mouse to 0-1000%

Now it's 0-400% - that's not enough for long drone videos and effective editing. At least 0-1000%, or unlimited, is ideal. With this improvement, you don't need to use Velocity.

- Pan / Crop - unlimited object zooming out.

If you want to make the logo much smaller and put it in the corner, Pan / Crop won't work. Pan/Crop does not allow you to zoom out the logo indefinitely. You need to use a plugin for this.

- add more effects for transitions and all keyframes (as in Blufftitler, Vegasaur Tweener and many others)

Vegas vs others

- export subtitle track to SRT and SUB (as in Vegasaur)

We can lock individual events (and by locking all the events on a track achieve the equivalent of a Lock Track button (or menu option), but it would be nice to have a dedicated Lock Track feature
