It's not really an upgrade. It is just a temporary discounted price.

Just got a response. The author of SeMW extensions plans updating "SeMW Extensions" to work with VP14 (his OFX plug-ins "Auto Levels" und "Graide Color Match" still work fine in VP14).

Thanks Marco. Great news.

Even though the new update was a bit light on new features, just having a version of vegas that runs smoother and doesn't crash when I look at it wrong was worth the cost to me. There's still some bugs to iron out, as expected with any new software release, but for the most part it's the most stable vegas I've used, and I notice a definitely performance boost when editing. Effects don't seem to tax my aging hardware as much as they used to. Here's to hoping they throw in some free goodies in the form of updates in the future.

Support for reading and writing HEVC/H265 files.

Dear Nick,

I asked a question to the forum of CreativeCow because of that I thought the official forum of Vegas Pro.

Your link didn't open correctly for me but I could copy and paste the text in the link and find it. You asked:

"...I wonder, is it support importing video files with encoded H.265/HEVC (of course, provided that the file's container is MP4)?
Why am I asking? "H.265/HEVC" not mentioned in the "Import" part of the "Supported formats" list."

I'm not sure where that list is but in VP14 if you click File>Open (not File>Import) you can see that is should support opening of HEVC with the following file extensions: .m2t, .ts., mts, m2ts, .mov (see the blue line and the one below it in this screenshot):

I have personally opened HEVC in .mov wrapper, because that is what VP14 renders out. I don't know what happens if you try to open HEVC in a .mp4 wrapper. If anyone has a sample file, we could try it.

GJeffrey wrote on 9/23/2016, 1:43 AM

It's possible to open HEVC in mp4 wrapper (x265 + AAC audio).

With my 3min + file, vegas works hard for 10s reading the whole file (cpu @ about 80%), then no problem to play the file on the timeline.

Hi guys, i am thinking about to buy SVP14 Pro Suite, but still dont know, if it finally supports my graphic card. I have Nvidia GTX 970, which is the better one, but vegas13 could not use it. Do you know if this new version will support it and will use all of its power ?

fr0sty wrote on 9/23/2016, 5:50 AM

I was hoping that I could explore these plugins that come with the suite today, but I found out that even though the required specs say my GPU should be compatible (Geforce GTX 4xx or higher, I'm 970), it isn't. I knew about V13 not being compatible with Maxwell GPUs, but hoped that issue would have been fixed, as that's a pretty popular card to not have any support for. Hopefully we get some added GPU compatibility patched in... I won't be a happy camper if they expect me to upgrade yet again just to get support for modern GPUs. No reason why an editor launched in 2016 shouldn't be able to use a popular GPU launched 2 years earlier.

It won't. No real change in GPU acceleration in VP14.

SphinxRa40 wrote on 9/23/2016, 11:58 AM

it says "or higher"... not " to highest"..sorry bad joke...you are right and the GPU will hopefully come someday, then i wil maybe consider to upgrade to magix, for now deleted VP14 from my SSD :)

NickHope wrote on 9/23/2016, 12:22 PM

It's compatible. It just doesn't run fast. But I agree that they should be much more forthcoming about what works well and what doesn't.

VEGAS is better with OpenCL than CUDA, and cards like the AMD R9 380X do well. I've read 1 or 2 reports that the GTX 1080 works well but I would want to do more research before recommending that over an AMD card.

fr0sty wrote on 9/23/2016, 1:29 PM

I stand corrected... oddly enough it now has decided to start working out of nowhere.

Also, was the $199 [VP13-upgrade + VP14] offer for VEGAS Pro or VEGAS Pro Edit?

That was for Vegas Pro, and you should have gotten your v14 keys automatically via email.

What I've not been able to find is a way to upgrade from v14 Pro to V14 Suite ...

James Moore wrote on 9/23/2016, 3:21 PM

Lordy this is all so confusing.  It doesn't bode well for the future.

I got the pop-up regarding having to upgrade to VP14 for $199 by Sept. 27 when I started Vegas this morning.  I dismissed it as I had a job to ship.  Now I'm trying to go back see about doing the upgrade.  Of course I couldn't find any link or any way to get the pop-up to show again but I stumbled upon this thread and followed a link where I can now load into a shopping cart VP14 upgrades.

But the confusion continues as thre are 3 options Pro Edit, Pro, and Pro Suite.  I think it is PRO that I've got in my current Version 13 - I've got the Izotope plugins ect.  Is the 199 a bait and switch and I've really got to spend 249 to get the equivalent of what I have already (i.e. Izotope plugins) and what's this about scripts and extensions not working in VP14?  I need my plural eyes to sync audio...

So, I'm a bit flummoxed here and not impressed with what I'm seeing out of MAGIX so far.  Normally I'm one to keep my main editing software up to date so I can ride the software development curve and get the benefits of the new stuff and bug fixes ect. but the confusing pricing structure and the extremely short timeframe to upgrade (I got the notice today, Sept. 23, a friday, with the weekend fast approaching, giving me Monday Sept 26 as decision day.

All this strikes me as quite silly because when I bought this software from an industry leader (Sony) I thought my experience with the evolution of the software would be professional and rational.  Hopefully this confusion on the roll out is just MAGIX teething pains and they'll get their act together.

Many concerns with this roll out here as well. It took quit a bit of time, effort and cash to get my programs running together. Does Magix expect me to throw all that away?

Hi Nick - one of those reports might have been mine. But unfortunately, I have to say that with MAGIX VP 14, even my mighty GTX 1080 (working perfectly with Resolve, and indeed better than expected with SCS VP 13) - has been brought to its knees again :( What a shame! What's worse, my investment in Decklink 4K Extreme 12G (again - mainly with Resolve in mind, but basing on the early promises how it will be bettter suported in VP 14 than it was in VP 13, I was also hoping for a good experience with the MAGIX product) doesn't work properly, either. It does support UHD and 4K DCI as promised, but it slows down playback even further. Also, for whatever reason, 10-bit processing only works with up to 1080 resolutions - when I turn it on in a UFHD or 4K project my preview monitor goes blank (already placed a ticket with MAGIX).

Generally speaking: I'm extrememly disappointed with VP 14 in its current form. A great pity, as I was waiting for it with anticipation; the only hope is there will be Builds with successive bug fixes before MAGIX rolls out the 15 major release and asks for even more money... I must admit I'd be very reluctnat to pay!

I have been using VP14 for the past 3 days. I'm quite happy with the results compare to VP13.

Pros:

  • Better preview performance even with dynamic RAM preview above the 200MB original set up.
  • Rock solid (I haven't use any Newblue plugins which seem to bring troubles). No more crash during rendering using 32bits video mode. I'm rendering a 8min project with heavy color corection. It last 6h without any glitches
  • All the plugins I have (Neatvideo, BorisFX, Mercalli) works well. No need to update them.
  • Can import prores footage without quicktime and without gamma shift.

Cons:

  • No more AC3 pro audio rendering.
  • VP14 seems to use more GPU memory than VP13. Whenever I use GPU accelerated FX (non Vegas native), the preview becomes black or the driver crash. Disabling GPU in Vegas solve the issue. It's probably due to my aging system.
  • Don't like the new black icons, not visible enough.
  • All scripts aren't available anymore. Magix stated that it's because of Legal issue with the name space "Sony". 1 question: So why VP14 is still under sonycreative software on the windows registry?

So far, as many wrote on this forum, there aren't many new functions implemented. It's not a new version, 13.5 may be, but Magix had a tight schedule to release VP14 which most probably was already under development under SCS.

I hope that Magix will speed up the development (GPU support, etc...) before releasing VP15. If not it might be the last version I will buy.

For reference, My aging PC is configured with 3930K CPU, GTX570 GPU (latest available driver), 32GB RAM, and Windows 10 pro (version 10586.589)

Dear Nick Hope GJeffrey,

Thank you both for your replies, infos and the screenshot. With your replies, I now sure that VP14's supports to importing HEVC import & export.

The part of Supported formats > Import In official site is unmentioned H.265/HEVC.

Import

4K XAVC S, 4K XAVC, XDCAM EX, XDCAM Optical, DV, HDV, AVCHD, NXCAM, MOV, MP4, WMV, MPEG-1/2/4, H.264/AVC, WAV, FLAC, AAC, MP3, OGG, WMA, Surround Sound/5.1, BMP, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, OpenEXR-, DPX- and WDP image sequences

If it mentineod in here, I wouldn't write to this here & CC forums. Can you inform to webmaster?

A request/suggestion for VegasPro 14.1 (or 15): Must now add Matroska (MKV) file container support (both import & export). Sony hadn't care MKV format. I hope, Magix will be care about MKV and add support as import & export. Even Microsoft added MKV file support to Windows 10.

James Moore wrote on 9/24/2016, 11:28 AM

I presume that like with Sony in the past installing VP14 I will still have VP13 installed and fully functional. Correct?

I think I will upgrade to give the MAGIX route a chance but I am unsure what upgrade to do.  From what I  can tell from the product comparison chart Pro gives you DVD architect  plus NewVlueFx and Suite gives you BorisFx.

What about Izotope Nectar and the Sony mastering plug-ins?  Crucial to my audio work flow is the Nectar compressor and Sony Mastering Exciter.  Will these be available in VP14 Edit?  PRO or Suite?  If VP 13 is still installed at least I can use that when required though I'm concerned that when building a new computer  I may not be able to install the old Sony VP13 without Sony to activate it.

It would be nice if MAGIX folk would chime in and offer some clarification as to what is going on.

I just paid for the V14 upgrade.  My first session was kind of short.  Tried to drop a ProRes clip on the timeline for my current project.  V14 crashed.  Tried another clip in the same format.  Crashed again.  I'll give V14 another shot after the next update.  Patiently hoping for the best.
