Vegas Pro 22 - Importing OBS files super slow and app not responding !

DavY wrote on 8/9/2024, 4:08 AM

Hi,

I'm currently using Vegas Pro 20 and I've installed Vegas Pro 22. Same settings and how the application is launched (as admin + high priority). But for some unknown reason, when importing any video to v22, everything is super slow, it takes ages to just create the sfk files and the application sometimes is even freezing ! without saying during the slow loading time, it is impossible to play the video or do any action due to the non-responding app !

Same actions are working fine without any issue on v20, meaning something is wrongly handled in v22 compared to v20.

I've also re-installed the application to ensure it was installed as admin, but no improvement.

Please help understanding why simple actions are so slow and if there is a fix / workaround, thanks.

Regards
Davy

And quality of the rendering is a lot different and worst on v22 with exact same settings !
I hope this is just about some hidden settings that need to be adjust, otherwise, this is kind of bad new stuff !

Greetings @DavY. I looked at your User Profile, and guess what. It's blank. There is no information at all.

So, here is a suggestion. Add your complete computer specs in your Signature like mine below. That is usually where we all start if you want help.

Second, what specific files are "slow" in importing? Is it always or the first time?

You give very cryptic information. In order to help you, you can start with this POST, specifically answering "B" and "C".

Many are here to help, but you have to provide the necessary information for that to happen.

As to VP22, it's working fine on my computer spec'ed in my Signature. Nothing is "slow".

I've updated my profile for next time...
Anyway, I've figured out which setup was not exactly the same between v20 vs. v22 !

Basically in my case, the huge slowness when importing any video was related to the below option "Preferences > File I/O" which was not selected by default:

Without such option, my video from OBS + Remux () which is composed of 1 video track + 6 sound tracks was taking 5mins 15s to just import it. Even an empty track was taking 40-50s to import ! And also, the rendered video quality is very bad with this option not enabled.
But with this option "Legacy AVC decoding" selected, then the same video takes 32s to be imported and rendered video quality is good.

Another option which also helped a bit to speed up, is from "Preferences > Video" and to turn off / limit the thumbnails to show from the app... "Head, Center, Tail" is large enough for my usage. And by changing that option, the video takes <20s to be imported.

There are some other hidden options which are recommended in some YouTube videos, but I didn't really see any huge difference at the end, so I'm not sharing them...

Hope it will helps anyone which could have the same slowness when importing / using Vegas Pro.

Davy

Thanks for clarifying what your settings were and what you changed to make things much faster on importing and rendering.

Like you, I do not have all the thumbnails showing on my clips. To "me", it's unnecessary clutter on the timeline. I only have "head and tail" since I know what is in my clips and can scrub through them quickly.

As for OBS files being used, there have been several conversations about how to effectively use them in Vegas Pro. From OBS settings to Vegas settings. But sadly, I haven't used OBS files, just Panasonic MP4 or MOV files, which were never an issue.

Glad you've figured things out! Maybe your title should have been "Vegas Pro 22 - Importing OBS files super slow" since eventually, everything, albeit interminably long, did eventually show up?

@DavY Not clear which version of OBS you're using. As I recall, for a while older versions where only using Fragmented mp4 which required using the OBS remux function before loading into Vegas. Newer versions let me choose. I have my computer powered via a ups so I select regular mp4. Newest OBS also adds a beta hybrid mp4 intended to be the best of both worlds. Haven't tried that one yet.

The 1,000 pound baby elephant in the room is your OBS recording settings; the defaults are not automatically optimized for use in Vegas for your particular recording needs. Tell us what those needs are, and provide the critical information about the stubborn file you recorded:

Hi,

Below my OBS setup, which is pretty basic one.

I'm saving in MKV format, as MP4/MOV could have issue in case of crash (which could happen time to time), which is pretty what a lot of ppl are using too.

Basically, just recording via OBS and store in MKV format. And then Remux to MP4 to make it usable by Vegas Pro which was not really supporting MKV.
I just tried to import MKV in v22, which is working, but it is so slow that I stop the import which took ages !

I might have to try other format, but MKV + Remux is pretty the most approach used... What is currently unknown is why the "Legacy AVC decoding" must be enabled in v22 to make it works correctly ! With that option, no issue anymore, just wondering why it is required, as it was not set by default.

Again, after activating the "Legacy AVC decoding", everything is fine... Looks like Vegas Pro just doesn't support the Remuxed MP4 from OBS without that option !

Just wanted to say thank you as this has solved my problem. I also use OBS with similar settings and it worked well in Vegas Pro 19, but in Vegas Pro 22 the framerate of the video was not right.

60 fps was not smooth as 60 fps should be - be it in the preview window of Vegas 22 or the final rendered video. Although the video is exported as a 60 fps video, you can tell it's actually closer to 30 fps. While the original OBS video is a smooth 60 fps, once rendered through Vegas 22, it would become less smooth.

Anyway, turning on "Legacy AVC decoding" helps with that too.

And yes, now Vegas Pro 22 seems to accept some .mkv and .mp4 files that the previous versions didn't want to import. So even when you turn the Legacy AVC decoding option, the new features seem to still work great as well.

I'd only use legacy (or experimental, as it's called with HEVC) decoding when necessary, as it is slower than the new decoders.

@DavY

Thank you for posting properties. I believe I have an answer for you.

Your source MKV video bitrate is 120Mbps Variable. A good place to start from for good picture quality.

However, your remux to MP4 is over 400 Mbps. Virtually impossible for Vegas to ingest, unplayable by any reasonable means, and the bandwidth uptick adds no additional quality whatsoever to your source.

A really good place to start is your original bitrate, 120Mbps,but see if you can live with a lower frame rate, 60fps is practical maybe?

Those numbers are good as a starting point for many modern systems, but even those would choke my modest i5 machine.

@DavY I agree with mark-y above. I typically captured 30 fps 8-bit avc hd which looks great at about 15mbps with the highest complexity content. 120fps would only be 60mbps. But the highest complexity is not typical for game output, which is usually about half that. For similar headroom and less capture-load, 40mbps cbr might be optimal with a little headroom. If your game and monitor don't actually do 120fps, capturing 60fps would knock appropriate bitrates in half. Getting down to more reasonable bitrates and capture loads might stop your system from crashing. Making mkv crash protection unneeded. And enabling you to get right from capture into Vegas using normal mp4 and the whole enchilada instead of only a piece.

Although the video is exported as a 60 fps video, you can tell it's actually closer to 30 fps.

Your project settings might not be correct. Make sure your project is set to 60fps (and make sure to check your mediainfo to make sure your media didn't encode at 59.94fps, if it did, set your project to that), and disable resampling (which can cause ghosting and jitter).

In the end, since there is not a video playback service (Facebook, Youtube, etc) that supports 120fps, there is no reason to capture at that framerate. They're just going to throw away every other frame anyway and toss it back down to 60fps upon playback, so you're reducing your video quality by 1/2 by having to encode twice as many frames at the same bitrate for nothing.

Thanks all for your feedbacks.

To answer some of the questions

  • Obviously, my games and monitor support 120fps 😁 otherwise as you shared, it would make no sense to record like that.

  • The issue is not really about uploading on YouTube or other online platforms which don't really support more than 60fps, but I'm keeping all the main original videos at 120fps, because watching a video from my computer make a huge difference between 60fps vs 120fps, especially for games videos

  • The crashing mainly came (rarely) after playing + streaming + recording all from the same computer for few hours... I know, I should put streaming/recording on another computer 😁

  • @mark-y, thanks for pointing the remux video bitrate difference !
I'm not really sure how to read those numbers, as there is no option from OBS on the Remux action to change it... and we can still see Max bitrate to 120Mbs...
Because Remux process is normally simply changing the container without touching the video itself ! So, Mbs should not be impacted as is

I've quickly tried to remux the same video using FFMEPG with the option "-video_track_timescale 60", then the same bitrate from MediaInfo is divided by 2 (~200Mbs). But the video itself when playing is slowing down by 2 too... not sure if there is any interest about that !
  • Regarding your other remark "Virtually impossible for Vegas to ingest, unplayable by any reasonable means", I'm not sure about that, as there is no issue with the legacy option enabled to import and edit the 400Mbs video without slowness or other problem

I might have to check more different settings from OBS recording to optimize some of the options...
