Thoughts on Vegas marketing

I don't necessarily mind the dancing ad, but the fact that they led with it is what I think did more harm than good. Instead, I think the same approach that Boris took with Mocha Vegas should have been the foot that Vegas put forward with promoting itself on launch day.

@Yelandkeil

I would prefer that the screen flickered for 16 ms and the Vegas Pro 21 workspace appeared fully populated like magic(x). I really don't ever want to see a splash screen.

If splash screen, I created a bundle, which do you like:

I love the first 2, 3 looks too familiar.

I've been around since Vegas 9 (Sony) and I think Vegas is made for the 'bubble' and will never leave it.  I love it and I am part of that bubble.

@YelandkeilWith all due respect, I really think this task should be in the hands of professional designers. Say what you will about the current splash screen, if I was met with one of your examples upon opening, I would feel like Vegas just regressed back in time to the early 2000's.

not sure I completely get your "Woman: I'm falling in love with U" example (or that you thought the dancers were political activists), but I agree with other commenters that we shouldn't underestimate newcomers wants and needs for good, concrete examples, use cases and feature showcases when marketing this kind of product.

I am 44 years old and I like the new design.

Those of us who know Vegas from the beginning know how it works. Advertising is not targeted at us. You have to accept that. Vegas needs to attract mainly young creative people. You have to spice it up a bit to get them interested. I hope there won't be a petition here to bring back the blue waves, please. That's not really what Vegas is about. Or?

Personally, for about 3 years now, it has really bothered me that Vegas hides great features from the start to make it look like Premiere. I think that's the wrong way to go. In the default design, I can't even record sound or add FX to the track. I'm sure it won't interest a new user because Vegas doesn't seem to be able to do anything. The user has to figure out for himself that there is a Hamburger Menu. Personally, I was first attracted to Vegas 10 by the fact that everything was visible from the beginning and the program gave the impression of unlimited possibilities.

If you really want to fight for something meaningful, then don't edit the opening image, but fight for the return of the old layout.

jetdv wrote on 8/15/2023, 2:36 PM

@pierre-k, just turn those buttons back on in the new version?

pnglover wrote on 8/15/2023, 3:05 PM

@pierre-k

I appreciate ur comment and I get what you're saying, but I don't agree personally. For a new user, I imagine having every single button and function visible on first open can be a bit overwhelming and frankly unecessary. Advanced users (like you and I) will simply enable these buttons and take advantage of all the advanced features. Novices will learn about these features as well, as they learn and grow in experience with the software. Modern UI designs are more minimal now than they were at the time of Vegas 10, and I think the philosophy of making the first greeting as clean and easy-to-grasp is smart. But, to your point, it couldn't hurt to include an alternate "legacy" layout in the window layout selection for old-school users.

And to your point about this ad not being aimed at us hardcore fans, but rather young creative audiences, I fully understand this. I just don't agree that dancers and acrobatics and actors is the right move for this purpose. I don't think what you're seeing posted in the initial post is how you attract a young, creative audience of content creators in 2023.

pierre-k wrote on 8/15/2023, 3:09 PM

......... to your point, it couldn't hurt to include an alternate "legacy" layout in the window layout selection for old-school users.

Yes, please.

pierre-k wrote on 8/15/2023, 3:32 PM

It is a worldwide problem - to simplify programs. I hate this trend. And when I really need something, instead of one click of the mouse, I have to make 5.

When I installed Premiere after years of working in old Vegas, I thought it was stupid, because according to their default layout, it couldn't do anything. I tried it for a while and deleted it. Now the new Vegas looks the same as Premiere and I'm worried that a new user will do the same thing with Vegas that I did with Premiere. They will find that Vegas is the same as Premiere and will have no reason to learn different controls.

That's the last thing on the topic. It's just the opinion of a hardcore fan who loves practical things.

A great idea. The new Splash screen is in the like or dislike realm. Me, I've turned the Splash screen off in Interal Preferences (use 'splash' as a keyword in the Int Pref search field and then in the top 'Hide logo splash ... ' field change FALSE to TRUE then hit the Apply button. A downside on opening VP is that you'll get a building up of the windows that would otherwise be hidden when the Splash window is showing.

I was just referring to the splash screen, it is a still picture and there his camera is not pointing at the shoelaces

Update: @RogerS indeed, you are correct, the camera is pointing upward, I guess my brain does not accept what my eyes are seeing, or I need new spectacles. To my defense, the splash screen is so ugly my brain freezes over and the image is gone (fast PC!) before I can take it all in correctly 😉

Agreed. The camera is looking up - but the camera is so small that it raises the question as to how could be considered to be a serious professional camera (compare to similar images used by daVinci Resolve). But on the other hand, years ago an Australian federal parliamentarian refused to do an interview with a journalist from a mainstream TV station because the camera that they were using wasn't big enough. True.

I don't know, a a7sIII, FX3 or FX30 is perfectly reasonable as a professional camera for handheld dynamic shoots like this. You wouldn't try to lug an ENG camera around for that.

I've done press conferences where certain reporters were recording with smart phones (and the writer whips out a SLR to get a few bad pictures) so I'd say the era has changed. VEGAS should be part of that dynamic future where you can make high-quality works with affordable and simple gear.

j-hopman wrote on 8/17/2023, 7:54 AM

While we're at it: on the bottom of their webpage they state "Connect with a diverse community that welcomes all, from seasoned filmmakers to up-and-coming YouTubers. Get expert tips, find inspiration and become part of the VEGAS Pro network." and then show a picture grid of the dancers from the ad posted above. They don't link to anything so I'm not 100% sure what they're referring to. Other than this very forum, I don't really feel like there's a coherent Vegas community to join anywhere else. This is just my feeling/opinion of course, but yeah.

Instead of this vague statement and dancer picture grid, why not involve the actual community on this? Get some testimonials, get some cool example work going, expert knowledge, the works. I'm not sure why, but it feels like they're a bit hesitant to 1. show off the UI, and 2. show off the community. Which is strange, considering we've got a pretty good (albeit small) community here, and the UI is one of the main selling points of the software.

And here I thought the guy looked like he was adjusting his exposure in preparation for shooting the feet with an inappropriate lens. My personal experience is that a paparazzi-minded camera person might end up scoring a field goal out the nearest window behaving that way.

Brings to mind a Madeline Kahn line...

Well... late as always. I have to say, I hated the promo. All about young people, nothing really about Vegas and how it can work for these young people.

But then, I thought i was "old school" and just old. But still, nothing was showing much that Vegas can do. The promo should hook you in showing what/how Vegas works easily for novice and professionals. "We" (users) know how Vegas works, but I didn't see of that in the promo. A splash of Suite and Post showing off, plugin support, etc., and how everything is right there in front of you. But that's me. "New" was briefly highlighted. There wasn't motion tracking with Boris (Mocha), no Primatte, no compositing with POST... none of the features that would make someone think about considering the product. Honestly, I saw nothing the stood out that made me think "WOW, I need that ability", even though I know there are new features that will cause me to upgrade.

Here is a 6 year old promo video for a consumer editing software. Don't expect "pro" anything even though it's mentioned. But 6 years ago, I thought this was compelling coming from a consumer editing software.

Dexcon wrote on 8/18/2023, 8:51 AM

+ 1 @Reyfox  ... it's just weird. There's an old saying in advertising ... promote your Unique Selling Proprosition (USP) that sets your product apart and therefore being better than your competitors.

The new promo and splashscreen seems to me to cater for the WOKE market ... and hasn't that gone well recently for some well known American companies.

@Dexcon, I just didn't "feel" that promo. It didn't cause me to think, "I must have this software to do this or that...". Nothing stood out with the editing. I could do what was shown in Pinnacle Studio's latest version.

Trying to bring in "fresh blood" is important. That usually means younger people. But what about event editors? Why would someone who edits weddings, recitals, etc., be interested in Vegas? What does Vegas do that other editing software doesn't do as well? The "ad" that was done by... his name escapes me, but @RogerS uses his video in benchmarking, was something that actually showed the software in action. Someone telling me they like to edit "fast" means nothing to me. Show me how.

All the criticism posted in this thread is not here to hurt Vegas, or even the ones who put the promo together. But you have a finite period to peeks someone's interest. And this promo would not cause me to consider Vegas or switch from say, Pinnacle Studio.
