Video card suggestions?

MikeLV wrote on 8/14/2019, 3:40 PM

I think my video card is about to go. It's an nvidia GTX 570 (yes, it's older, bought used in 2013 ). I still use Vegas v13.

My motherboard is ASUS P8Z68-V PRO with an Intel Core i7-2600K and I'm running Windows 7 64bit

I don't do any 4k stuff, just HD

@wwaag I use your HOS for encoding video to H.264

With the above information, what budget card would you recommend that will work well with Vegas? Doesn't have to be brand new cutting edge, just something that will get the job done without a lot of issues.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Thanks for the reply, though, I just found this thread; it doesn't look like I will go for that card:
https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/ati-rx580-crashing-vegas-11-14--106699/?page=1

I guess maybe it works on later versions of Vegas, but I'm on a much older version.

Based on this post, https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-graphics-cards-gpu-acceleration-for-vegas-pro--104614/ it sounds like I should be looking for the RX480 - would anyone agree? And if so, what brand is recommended?

john_dennis wrote on 8/14/2019, 9:30 PM

I wouldn’t buy a used RX480 when this can be had for less than $200.00.

MikeLV wrote on 8/14/2019, 9:35 PM

@john_dennis, is that a good choice? That threat about the 580 scared me away from that card. Is the 593 different?

john_dennis wrote on 8/14/2019, 9:48 PM

If I was scared away by every thread where someone couldn’t get something to work, I’d never get anything done.

MikeLV wrote on 8/14/2019, 11:28 PM

Yes, you're right about that. But also the fact that the 580 and 590 weren't mentioned in that FAQ thread I cited above.

Howard-Vigorita wrote on 8/14/2019, 11:44 PM

I wouldn't choose an RX480 over a 580... I have both and they've been reliable for years (they're still running) but the 580 is faster. 590 has a higher clock so it would be would be even faster. You might want to also focus on the card maker... I'd had great luck with the Sapphire 480 on Win7 but made the mistake of getting a less expensive Gigabyte 480 for my next Win10 computer but it performed very poorly... ended up replacing it with a Sapphire 580 and it was like night and day.

MikeLV wrote on 8/15/2019, 8:23 AM

Just trying to avoid more downtime, since it looks like I'll be ordering the card online so it will be shipped. Hoping to get it right the first time, and I know video cards are an important part of the system.

walter-i. wrote on 8/15/2019, 3:06 PM

@MikeLV
If you have the card built in, I would be very interested in the performance gain you have.
I use (still) nearly the same motherboard, the same processor and WIN7 64 bit as you, with Radeon HD 6870 (see profile) and also work mainly in HD. I'm actually happy with my setup, but if it brings a real improvement, I would upgrade my computer.

Many greetings
Walter

MikeLV wrote on 8/15/2019, 5:04 PM

@walter-i., I don't really understand your question about "built in" My GTX570 is not built in, it is plugged into a slot on the motherboard. That card has died and I'm looking for an affordable, and of course better, replacement.

MikeLV wrote on 8/15/2019, 6:47 PM

Some other requirements:

I need:

  • 1 DisplayPort
  • 1 HDMI Port
  • 1 DVI Port

Should I definitely go AMD instead of Nvidia? If so, I should look for a Sapphire brand, 570, 580 or 590, correct?

Kinvermark wrote on 8/15/2019, 7:25 PM

FWIW, I have had no Vegas specific problems with Rx 580. It's a good choice on a budget. Got one second hand for ~$150 USD.

There have been some minor annoyances with occasional screen flicker/dropout (I have two UHD monitors connected by HDMI) that may be specific to my setup.

MikeLV wrote on 8/15/2019, 8:01 PM

Thank you for your input. Can you tell me what version of Vegas you were using the 580 with? Also what brand is your 580 card?

Kinvermark wrote on 8/15/2019, 8:06 PM

Vegas 14, then 16. Tested with 17 - seems same as 16. Sappire Nitro+. Very common card.

@MikeLV

Thank you for your demand.

Excuse my english - (better the translation from Dr.Google ;-))))
It's exactly how you say it:

About a year ago I upgraded one of my older Xeon workstations, with PCIe 2.0 motherboard, from a Nvidia GTX 570 to a $130 (USD) AMD RX 570... The AMD 570/580/590 are all based on the same architecture... However, I am no longer using Vegas 13 to provide comparisons... The older versions of Vegas may not take advantage of newer GPU's features, like they way they handle H.264... The Nvidia GTX 570 / 580 were great back in the Vegas 10-12 days because Vegas utilized the CUDA cores for MainConcept renders needed for Blurays, etc. However, today I am mostly outputting H.264 along with the intermediates, so the AMD RX 570 was a good, affordable upgrade for 1080p work on a Xeon...

A faster but still affordable option is the AMD Vega 56 or 64. When I updated one workstation to a 9900K for editing 4K video, I matched it to a liquid-cooled (quiet) Vega 64 for $350 (USD). (I have seen Vega 56 listed as low as $250 which offers better performance in Vegas compared to the similarly price RX 590...) I did not test the Vega 64 in my older Xeon system with PCIe 2.0, but I did test the AMD RX 570 in my 9900K workstation with PCIe 3.0. In Vegas 15/16 the Vega 64 is noticeably faster during both renders and preview FPS than the AMD RX 570, especially when editing 4K multi-camera... Just like with the Xeon, the RX 570 appeared fine for editing 1080p but I was unhappy with its ability to handle my 4K work, even on a 9900K system...

Unfortunately I did not actually benchmark my RX 570 when I had it in my 9900K system... However, you can search for my 9900K & Vega 64 benchmarks elsewhere on these forums... My results are very comparable to much more expensive systems...

I was just coming on to let you know I've ordered the:

Sapphire Radeon PULSE RX 590 8GB for $194 from NewEgg with overnight shipping. I sure hope the thing works!

Has Magix changed Vegas a lot from v13? I'm hesitant to upgrade just because I'm not a guru and do what I can to get by to get my work done and I'm halfway comfortable with v13. I wouldn't want to upgrade to find that the program is entirely different which happens so often. I'm shocked that they've released 4 more major versions (at least based on the version numbers) in the short time they've had Vegas.

john_dennis wrote on 8/16/2019, 4:23 PM

With Vegas 13, you can access the AMD VCE capabilities with Happy Otter Scripts...

AMD VCE is supported natively in Vegas Pro 15 under the Magix AVC render templates.

Though I start all my projects in Vegas Pro 13 to maintain compatibility between all the systems that I own, I usually do quick renders with Vegas 15 using AMD VCE.

My preferred output method is described in this thread.

For those still looking, Newegg has a NEW Vega 56 for $230 after rebate & promo code:

https://www.newegg.com/msi-radeon-rx-vega-56-rx-vega-56-air-boost-8g-oc/p/N82E16814137263?Description=MSI%20Radeon%20RX%20Vega%2056%20&cm_re=MSI_Radeon_RX_Vega_56-_-14-137-263-_-Product

If you under-volt the VEGA & set the fan to run at 50% max it will stay cool & quiet. The Vega 56 is MUCH faster than the RX 590 when running Vegas 15 or 16 & I expect the same when they get the bugs worked-out 17... (I also have a RX 570 overclocked to RX 590 speeds and it does not compare to my VEGA...) It is more power-hungry than NAVI or Radeon 7, but power usage is only a concern during renders... It does not draw a lot of power during editing. It's not like we render-out videos 24/7. Gamers are the ones who complain about power usage because some log 10-14 hours per day...

So I got the RX 590 installed and running fine in Windows. For a few minutes, I was very worried because Vegas would not open, nor would the AMD settings program. But after some reboots, and time? I was able to open both programs. Hopefully this card will be ok!
