Video editing Nvidia 8GB vs Radeon 12GB

Wiew wrote on 12/16/2022, 7:43 AM

Hello ,

I will invest in a new computer for video editing , in Januari (price tag around 2K)

A new computer that can last for the next 4/5 years , I do editing and compositing

Thinking of buying a Ryzen 9 5900x with 32GB Ram and of course a SSD hard drive

But for a videocard mostly 2 options are offered

Nividia GeForce RTX 3070 8GB or a Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB

My gut tells me that 12GB is better than 8GB,

but is this true?

Or is the Nvidia for video editing in Vegas better?

I could be wrong, but I get the impression (from arbitrary forum reads) there are in the last year more issues with Vegas using Radeon cards than Nvidea. There were times in the past that Radeon for Vegas was the preferred combo, but those times are long gone. Radeon makes excellent cards, and both Nvidea and Radeon are both good choices hardware wise, but my humble and subjective opinion is that Nvidea comes with superior software & drivers. Nvidea is also no brainer if you use other NLE's such as Davinci resolve in your toolbox.

On the subject of video memory, more is obviously better (at least for 4K video or higher), I have 24 GB.

The Radeon cards have been performing better in VEGAS in our benchmarks.

I’ve certainly seen this to surprisingly be the case myself. I have an AMD RX 580 8GB graphics card and that has been doing surprisingly good for me inside VEGAS Pro 15 and 18, and I came from an old HP pre-built with an Intel Q6600 CPU and an NVIDIA GT 430 1GB graphics card.

I'd avoid AMD for their frequently buggy drivers. The price/performance proposition is quite good, though.

Here's results from one user benchmark: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1b3ggVifKsuT-cp2kQHjum_KnQ4-2jBmUIvzmu7BQZ34/

Techgage also does benchmarks- worth spending some time on that site.

I've seen posts here about Nvidia driver issues too, so it's not just an AMD issue. Using Qualified drivers for AMD usually work quite well with Vegas. AMD is always releasing drivers, but they haven't gone through the Qualification. They are usually for gamers having issues with particular games. Rarely if ever, a mention of "content creation". Stay with the WHQL driver and you are good... but @Yelandkeil has posted some issues I think with HDR with the AMD's latest certified drivers.

As for which graphics cards work best with Vegas, there is no doubt on which cards work better.

As for Resolve, I have Studio and haven't tested anything yet.

As long as the version 22.5.1 stays there, the other updates/releases are "only" references, because even the AMD-team knows it's not replaceable.

Since more than half a year they tried audio noise-cancellation, or as you said @Reyfox gaming improvements, now the 22.12.1 for the new generation graphics cards...but, whilst we have zero probleme with 22.5.1, we can endure what they are trying for.

As for card choosing, when game and cuda not the basic necessity, AMD is bestens for VEGAS.

As for VRAM, the more the better (for higher resolution), but Nvidia's speed one level above that of AMD. So, 8 vs 12 no difference; 8 vs 16 then take the biger one.

Yelandkeil: thanks for the info. In my daugher' pc i just installed RX480 with latest drivers and have freezing, crashing problems with V19b643. I will try 22.5.1 driver and hope everything will be fine, because i also read amd is better than nvidia for Vegas.

That also my impression - summing up the number of issues with Nvidia cards here in this forum.

@Wiew Some things to consider is that you will not be able to render accelerated 10-bit with only an Amd gpu. Nvidia nvenc can render 10-bit hevc. And Nvidia currently seems to be the only one supporting ffmpeg v5 accelerated decoding independently of Windows. This also benefits apps like Resolve which use their libs. That said, all my high-end gpus are Amd for which Vegas has the best support around. Amd also has lower power-supply requirements than more expensive, high-end Nvidias... but a couple of years ago I added a 2nd gpu, a modestly powered Nvidia 1660, to my Xeon which has a 650w supply and no igpu.

@relaxvideo, I've used a RX480 8GB for years and never a problem. Using 22.5.1 driver I think is key. It's Qualified. There is a later version of WHQL driver just released, you can try that too. All the other drivers were not qualified and were basically "game" fixes.
