Yet Again, GPU Acceleration Nowhere to be Found

Hey there, I've been trying to look for a solution to this before, but I was using Vegas Pro 14 and I've seen over here that Magix crapped the latest build and hardware acceleration compatibility with various (older?) GPU's are now pretty much broken.

But because I was interested in the new effects/transitions in the newest Vegas Pro 20, I ended up buying it, hoping the faulty GPU detection would be gone. However, the problem is still there and Vegas simply can't see my video card, exclusively using my CPU for everything.

Is there something I can try to fix this? Hard resetting or reinstalling didn't work, and I have already the latest AMD drivers installed (Radeon RX550). I've even tried the drivers provided in the built-in update option in Vegas to no avail.

Find and open this file to see what's happening with GPU detection: gpu_video_x64.log it is located C:/users/username/Appdata/local/VEGASPro/20.0 (note that Appdata maybe a hidden directory on your system and you may need to set your folder options to show hidden files). The log file will open in notepad and tell you what Vegas finds when looking for your GPU. Also look in the Options File I/O tab to see if your GPU is listed but the setting is to use your CPU.

Looks like it's wrongly identifying the video driver as outdated, despite having the latest GPU driver installed? (Also tried before to completely uninstall it with DDU, but it keeps disabled for Vegas after complete reinstallation)

No luck in the File I/O tab options >.<

Yeah, I'm using the latest optional drivers because of the new OpenGL improvements, but I will try the stable driver and see if something got broken between releases

Oh yeah... That really wasn't a smart move from my part, I should be more cautious regarding such issues, didn't think much because as I have Vegas Pro 14, I was elegible for a good discount price for the latest version.

Once or twice I experiment with the more sophisticated features, and while Vegas performs in a somewhat acceptable state using such resources, it's still a bummer the broken GPU detection prevents me from having a more optimized workstation, even if just to gain a few more seconds during video rendering or a smoother video preview which is very poor =/

If anyone has any ideas of what else might be bugging Vegas and workarounds to the issue, I would be very grateful!!

Not clear which mfg made that card. You might try going into Win10 Settings for Display/Graphics and see if Win10 recognizes the gpu for powersave/performance settings and if not, whether a cumulative WinUpdate fixes it. Another thing to try is an older amd driver version since that's a pretty old design... I'd 1st look to the board-mfgr support site for the driver they supply. Might just be a cut-rate gpu implementation or a board already re-flashed for mining. Usually only happens with the $50 knock-offs and folks that try atiflash to fix them seem to have a tough time. I've had good luck with stock asus, sapphire, powercolor, and asrock rx480/580 boards but once had to trash an el-cheapo xfx rx480.

Personally, I'd just shop around for name-brand amd rx580 or nvidia 1650, minimum, but 1st see if anyone here has had success with the particular brand.

If I remember... our livestream setup is using an AMD 1600X and RX550. I will be there Saturday and see if I can install a trail version of Vegas 20 and see if it shows up.

@NTI-Productions I went to church today. Installed the trial version of VP20 on the livestream computer which has a Ryzen 5 1600X, 16GB RAM and an AMD RX550/550 GPU. Graphics driver is 22.5.1 WHQL.

Screenshot below showing that it is appearing in Preferences>Video and File I/O. The GPU is a no big name brand GPU. I bought it at a highly inflated price during the GPU high price era. Needed it, so way overpaid for it.

@Reyfox and @john_dennis, Thank you guys for taking the time and testing compatibility with these AMD cards!!! Given the fact most recent Vegas editions seem to be fine at detecting GPUs, That actually made me take another look at the video drivers available for my video card, and oh boy...

 

Not clear which mfg made that card. You might try going into Win10 Settings for Display/Graphics and see if Win10 recognizes the gpu for powersave/performance settings and if not, whether a cumulative WinUpdate fixes it. Another thing to try is an older amd driver version since that's a pretty old design... I'd 1st look to the board-mfgr support site for the driver they supply. Might just be a cut-rate gpu implementation or a board already re-flashed for mining. Usually only happens with the $50 knock-offs and folks that try atiflash to fix them seem to have a tough time. I've had good luck with stock asus, sapphire, powercolor, and asrock rx480/580 boards but once had to trash an el-cheapo xfx rx480.

Personally, I'd just shop around for name-brand amd rx580 or nvidia 1650, minimum, but 1st see if anyone here has had success with the particular brand.

Sorry, I forgot to mention (in truthness, I didn't even know it was a factor) my video card is actually a single low profile version of the RX550 specification, being pretty much a watered down version of it made by PCYES. Reason I bought it was because I needed a video card that only took a single PCI slot rather than the usual two slots, but at the same time being the bare minimum acceptable for modern software requirements, so this card came pretty in hand!!

I went to the manufacturer's website but at the product's support page they just redirect me to the official 22.5.1 drivers which don't work. So I've tried a few random older versions to see if any would resolve this, but no deal.

Then, I remembered the driver CD installation I have kept in the video card box package. Installed it and...

Holy macaroni!!! That triggered the GPU detection!!!

However, the driver dates all the way back to 2018, and in addition to being very unstable, I also use this PC as a gaming rig to a certain extent, so I really, REALLY needed/wanted the OpenGL improvements made available in recent AMD driver versions, and wondered about having them somehow...

So, I started upgrading the video driver gradually. First, installed a december 2019 driver version, then a december 2020, a december 2021, a january 2022 and then every single stable driver of this year until the 22.5.1 version... And yeah! All of them worked like a charm, with Vegas still detecting the GPU!!!

I pushed my luck even further and kept installing more recent video drivers until the latest one released this last december 1st, and Vegas is still detecting it. Awesome!!!

Not sure what triggered Vegas to finally detect my GPU, I suppose this video card needed a missing dll or whatever that is only available in older video drivers, and by upgrading the video driver version by version I was able to keep the first one's specific settings? Or maybe my Windows 10 install is just broken, who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Vegas is spot on with hardware acceleration!!! Performing way better than I was expecting =D

You guys would actually be surprised about how faithfully this low profile RX550 still manages to retain the specs. For what it is, it performs very decently!!!

Yeap. Magix broke the last build of Vegas 14 entirely.

Despite having everything working fine now, I wonder which obscure and hardcoded methods Vegas employs nowadays to detect the GPU. Before this incident, I would never, ever know there was anything wrong at all, as the GPU worked great with every single process I throwed at it until now, including other editing softwares and graphical applications. I've even desperately tried the ancient Sony Vegas Pro 10 and hardware acceleration just works wonderfully 😵😵😵😵

Glad it worked out for you. But why is a mystery to me. Perhaps reinstalling the 1st driver release version did some overwrites which got rid of some bad juju. I usually use a free app called DDU to accomplish that with a clean-out.

I've actually used both AMD's Cleanup Utility and DDU previously but still had no sucess at making Vegas detect the GPU. Indeed, only after installing the 2018 driver version is that the thing worked out. O_o

Point still stands, though. Likely this older driver release sets a register value or whatever that newer driver versions couldn't or needn't for my specific model, which just so happens to be a necessary step for Vegas to detect the GPU \o/

I'm just glad in the end I got to have hardware acceleration paired with AMD latest drivers support ;-)

I've actually already did it!!

So far using version 22.11.2 (latest one). Although like I said earlier, I upgraded the driver version by version (stable releases only), to make sure every new driver version was installed on top of the previous one, maintaining all previous settings, just to be safe, as I wasn't sure that after Vegas detected the GPU, if I could update the 2018 video driver right away to the latest one, given none of the 2022 drivers worked previously.

In the end everything worked fine, and now I'm enjoying a completely rewritten and faster OpenGL renderer and Vegas hardware acceleration with latest drivers =D

@Howard-Vigorita, you have RDNA 2 cards, correct? Looking at the gpu_video_x64.log, does the compute units listed match what AMD says you are suppose to have?

The reason for me asking this is that I looked at that the log and saw I had only 20 compute units. I went to the AMD forum and asked about this since the 6700XT is suppose to have 40 compute units. I was informed that RDNA2 cards use WPG (WorkGroupProcessor) where one WGP equals 2 compute units.

From the AMD forum, "As it turns out, getting half of the compute units is the way the card is designed to be. If you look at the AMD NAVI architecture document (https://developer.amd.com/wp-content/resources/RDNA_Shader_ISA.pdf, page 11), it says the following.

"Compute Units (CUs) : One half of a WGP. Contains 2 SIMD32’s which share one path to memory"

So, starting with RDNA NAVI archtecture 1 WGP = 2 Compute Units. I think WGP shows up on the 'clinfo' as the compute units, not the actual compute units in the conventional sense.

This is also mentioned in the RDNA wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RDNA_(microarchitecture), subsection 'Differences between GCN and RNDA')."

I am curious as to how many compute units in the Vegas gpu log does it show for you card(s)?
