Unprofessionally Hanging While Importing Large Number Of Media

iEmby wrote on 6/28/2018, 8:32 AM

I have

VEGAS Pro 15 Build 361 (x64bit) Genuine Copy
i5 Intel 7th Generation
Sapphire Radeon RX 560 - 4GB Graphic Card
SSD 250 GB
RAM 8GB
Window 10 Pro x64 (Genuine Copy)

I am using Vegas Pro from 3 years. I found it so fast, creative & comfortable software for media editing. But I suffer 2 problems which are not solved yet from vegas 13 to vegas 15.

1). First is whenever I imports large number around 200 - 300 of clips of any type (mp4, avi, mov, m2t, m2ts etc..), vegas hangs on that time very unprofessionally. The importing media window stops responding for some seconds or sometimes for a minute.
I just want to tell you step wise step happening. When i click on import media icon it opens browsing window, then i open my media folder (a folder contains 200-300 or more video clips), and then to import all clips i select first clip & then press Ctrl + A as we all do, exactly on that moment it hangs. I even don't able to click 'open' button on this moment. And after some seconds it resumes.

I am sending you guys a screenshot & a video clip regarding this.

Screenshot

Video Clip

Why this is happening, its so unprofessional bug because other software's like premier, fcp, media composer don't have this type of irritating bugs. There can be a loading media window like premier have while importing media.
One thing more It is not happen while importing small number of media files i.e.10-30 clips..
Please help if there is any solution.

2) Second problem i already posts but not solved yet. people said they also suffers this problems. then why Vegas Pro creators & founders not taking any action???

This is my 2nd problem post link...

Short answer: don't do that. Set up your project first than add the media in "reasonable" chunks. For me that is hundreds of UHD clips, but for you clearly it is less. You don't have a lot of RAM (can you add more?) and it will also depend a lot on the media you are using.

Maybe. No guarantee. It seems to me that 8 gb is too little for what you want to do, but there are many other factors: media types and size, hard drive space, etc. If it was my system, I would upgrade the RAM.

Ok i will try according to ur opinion.. but is there not any proper solution of this problem??.. i mean import all media files on one time without hanging problem ..

If by that you mean a "generic" solution that applies to all Vegas users. No.

It is system/usage specific so that it works for me, but not for you, etc.. In fact, the last time I had a problem like this was with Vegas Movie Studio, more than 10 years ago. My workaround was to use Cineform HDV file conversion (you could try converting your files to an easier to edit intermediate format or proxy) and eventually upgrade to a better machine.

It is not Vegas, it is your expectations of your system resources.

Every single interframe-compressed file must be expanded to raw bits for editing, fully 10 to 80 times the size of the sum of your compressed files! That's the conservative answer

Do the math, double it (for your output and temp files,) then either buy a "professional" editing suite, or search the following terms, which is what we mortals have invented just to save you any further angst.

Create Video Proxy

Create Subclip

Create Project Bundle

Digital Intermediate

Nested Projects

Save to New Track

Save As New Take

Also, a math review of ratios and proportions never hurt a beginning editor a bit.

Welcome to the world of Nonlinear Editing, a place where we also use exponentials a lot.

@Musicvid sir... I understand you opinion. But this bug is unprofessional because importing is a main part of software & bug like this sometime embraces.

one of my friend who used premier always, came to me for copying data & I was working on Vegas that time. and a moment I try to import videos, then he ask me why did it stuck taking load. that moment was embracing.

every software has bug, but bug should be extraordinary that looks professional, not basic & embracing..

I will not buy any other suite, I love Vegas pro..

by the way, thanks for sharing you inventions sir.. I must will try them...

SATA attached would be best. USB or network connections can be limiting.

Musicvid wrote on 6/28/2018, 4:30 PM

sir, with all due respect, it's math. You cannot hold more data in memory than the sum of your available remaining RAM and Page File because it is physically impossible, even on computers that have never seen Vegas. You can try shutting down all but barebones processes, and adding more Page File space in Computer->Properties->Advanced, but expect a hit in performance and perhaps stability. That's the way that it is.

And ignoring all of the tools that have been provided to help you overcome this excess seems, well, indifferent.

I just put this up, hope you take an interest someday...

I have the very same issue as 1 even with about 100 or even less files (media files are on internal SATA HDD).

This does not look like Vegas issue, more like OS issue.

When I pressed "Import media" button, open files dialog is opened and if files displayed as thumbnails the system start to render previews for them. It takes a while and the open dialog (and the whole Vegas) does not respond if I tried to scroll the list.

As workaround you may try to switch off thumbnails (I do not want to do this as it is handy), put your media on faster drive (SSD) or try to increase thumbnail cache size. I do not know how to make the process "non-locking".

I do not think that adding RAM or playing with page file solves the issue.

It would be nice if the Vegas overrides the system options and does not show the thumbnails in the import media dialog or does show them optionally. In my workflow I usually importing everything from a folder and do not care about thumbnails (that are handy to find exact file).

I was curious so I started with a fresh folder with 63 UHD (XAVC-S) files (60.2 GB) and 41 JPEG pictures. This is how long it takes to draw the waveforms and create the Vegas timeline thumbnails...

...about 18 seconds. For my projects, I'm unlikely to have 200-300 clips on the timeline. Even if the need was there, I think I could find a way around it.

fifonik wrote on 6/29/2018, 12:10 AM

I think we are talking about something different. It is not about when Vegas is building thumbnails and waveforms. We cannot reach this stage so fast :)

It's about system building thumbnails in the file open dialog window. At this stage we are not able to select file(s) and add them to Vegas yet. We can only wait until windows finish to do this to be able to select files and click 'Open' button.

I cannot watch you video right now, however from preview it looks like items displayed as a list in your file open dialog. No thumbnails. This is what I mentioned as a workaround: turning off system thumbnails.

I acknowledge the difference between Windows creating thumbnails and Vegas creating thumbnails. My default view for Windows Explorer is Details. Other views add nothing to my recognition of the files because of the way my brain works. I actually don't have an application associated with my camera files even though I have at least three applications that will play them.

But in Explorer isn't Vegas creating the thumbnails? After all in your AppData you will find folders for Device Explorer Thumbnails, Media Pool Thumbnails and File Explorer Thumbnails each containing created thumbnails.

1. Lose the thumbnails

2. Double your memory

3. Lose the 3 GHz processor.

I thought it might fix the issue as it looks like OS thumbnail creating process. I know that I have the same issue (so I recognized it). I was wrong.

I'd suggest you to submit a support request to Magix. May be they will be able to fix this on Vegas side. I checked on my PC and it's Vegas with FileIOSurrogate processes causes quite high CPU utilisation (drive utilisation is low in my case)

Also, you can try turning off the thumbnails in project media and explorer windows. I would keep the timeline thumbnails as they are generally needed for editing.  More hard drives can also help.  Remember my suggestion to borrow & test before you buy.  (The GPU is good 😃 )

By the way, Vegas is now rather hopeless at Media Management so I abandoned using the Project Media window for organization and instead rely on Adobe Bridge cc 2018 (it is free).

+1 on the Adobe Bridge, I have Adobe CC, so I of course have that , and use it, did NOT KNOW you can get that free, that is awsome, and it is quicker. So tip, use A Bridge to find those files you'd want, note which ones, and drag them into Vegas project files window. It's fast and no need to close Vegas, when done, close Bridge.

I actually do use Vegas Explore window, as well, sometimes, but when it is too slow, or bad with the thumbnails, jump over to Bridge, it is super fast loading and responds a bit better. Vegas is iffy, sometimes it's ok, and sometimes not so good, (I don't think I've known a more 'tempermental' program than Vegas.....mmmm???)
