Borders - The Bane of My Existence

john_dennis schrieb am 03.03.2022 um 20:43 Uhr

I created a non-sense project to test picture quality and sound sync when I was using Vegas Pro 17-455 daily. It had the Borders fX because that fX has been problematic since Vegas 10 or 11 from my memory. Today, I opened the project in Vegas Pro 19-458 and found the Border fX problematic, yet again.

I decided to do a survey of the project on Vegas Pro 17, 18 and 19. On the machine from my signature, on this day, with this O/S maintenance level, with this video driver, using the same project, Vegas 18-527 is the only Vegas Pro version that got it right.

Vegas Pro 17-455 (Project created in this version)

Vegas Pro 18-527

Vegas Pro 19-458

I'm going to go outside to mow my grass and forget that I ever touched a computer. I'm uncertain how long that attitude might last.

@set I'm not sure how @john_dennis has created the split screen effect? but are you saying you can reduce an image & have the border fit that reduced image?

This prob was discussed a while ago, swapping the Border around with a Bezier should resize the border to fit the Bezier but it doesn't

Selina schrieb am 03.03.2022 um 23:56 Uhr

Um, If I understand the problem correctly ...

Here I've added two solids and used the Track Motion to pan each to the left and right of screen and used the clips' Pan&Crop to resize them (just the horizontal margins) and then applied the FX "Border" to the clips.

That's my trouble as well with borderFX since first time I tried it, where 'fixed' to project resolution's area, and event pan crop mask, cropping fx etc has no effect. Size only affect if I scale down via Track pan crop.

Edit: @Selina: eh? hmmm...I need to try again.

@Selina Hi, i can do this if the border is applied the the event & controlled with Track Motion, i can see your border getting smaller as it moves, have you tried this on a video without it squishing the video,

Grazie schrieb am 04.03.2022 um 00:24 Uhr

@john_dennis - Doesn't appear to be using Track Motion. Purely MASKS. Here's what I see as the issue, although Border is an FX, it doesn't behave like "other" FXs. Other FXs can be contained to the Mask.

@Ehemaliger User

"...are you saying you can reduce an image & have the border fit that reduced image?"

That was the way it worked in the original Vegas 17 project. Now, it doesn't, but 18 gets it done properly.

@Selina

The issue is not how to do it. I've gotten it done in seven versions of Vegas. The issue is continuity from one version to another. Some day we're going to get old and our offspring are going to want to open our old Vegas Projects in Vegas Pro version 47- 938 to prepare our eulogy. They'll probably fail under the time constraint.

Being generally loathe to borders or frames on video, when I need one I choose not to fiddle with FX. Instead, I export an image sequence, apply an Action in Photoshop, and reimport.

@set @Selina @Ehemaliger User

Turning off GPU allowed Vegas Pro 19-458 to draw the borders properly with a hit to preview performance. This is not the first time in my life that I have seen this. I used the Vegas option to update video drivers and that did not fix the problem.

Vegas Pro 17 was fixed by disabling the Split Screen View / fX Bypassed switch.

I have just tried this too - and confirm that the GPU acceleration must be turned off for the border FX to work in a logical way (VP19-643). I sure wish this was not required! Perhaps a tick-box in the Border control properties to disable GPU FX... though I guess this is not possible.
And if there could be other places with a simple border adding feature - like directly in the pan/crop - mask (in addition to the mask feathering) or in the pip FX (though that would require it's shape to reflect the video after any cropping and not fixed to the project's aspect ratio). There is the cookie-cutter, but you cant alter the dimensions of the rectangle (that control could really do with a makeover to make it more flexible).

The use of a plain colour layer and a mask to cut out the required parts through which the video shows works ok - and that supports feathering - as required by this request.

Putting the border fx before the pan/crop can be helpful. And in any case it must be applied before the PIP fx.

The effort needed to use photoshop to apply such border or similar effects seems way too complex - particularly if the effect needs to be changed a number of times. And should you be using VEGAS Image or VEGAS Effects?

Yet it all seems rather fiddly or obscure.

What other ways are there to add effects/borders to the edge of a cropped video?

3POINT schrieb am 22.08.2022 um 21:23 Uhr

Just copy/paste the crop/pip settings of the video/picture event to a colored background event on a track just below and change those settings slightly to create the border.
