MORE FORUM LINK ERRORS

Musicvid schrieb am 02.11.2021 um 17:03 Uhr

Steps to reprodoce:

Go to my signature:

Right-click and copy the link to "IMPORTANT! INFORMATION REQUIRED TO HELP YOU"

Paste the link directly into a post. It doesn't work because an extra colon ":" is being added at the end.

This:

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/

--becomes--

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/important-information-required-to-help-you--110457/:/

--which leads to a 404.

@Musicvid Works for me fine; tested via post and signature link using chrome....

m2016 schrieb am 02.11.2021 um 17:27 Uhr

Same result with Edge...

The second one works for you in Chrome? That is what the forum software is creating. With an added colon at the end of the string. And it doesn't work here. Another user posted a problem with the same link.

Yes, seems to be completely ok:

If you mean the second url in your post, no, thats invalid because of ":/" at the end but how this happens to you we can not reproduce.

Musicvid schrieb am 02.11.2021 um 19:42 Uhr

but how this happens to you we can not reproduce.

All I have to do is copy the link location in Chrome (context menu) on Windows 10 and paste it into a forum post, and save it. The link resolves to an invalid address. This is 100% reproducible in Denver, CO, USA.

It may be that the DNS tables are borked in at least one zone. That could explain multiple reports with no errors elsewhere.

And today it's working again...

m2016 schrieb am 03.11.2021 um 18:19 Uhr

@Musicvid We did not change anything.... Do you use any browser extension? Maybe they made an update?

Regarding DNS: This portal does not have any local DNS settings. All servers are located in Germany atm.

Musicvid schrieb am 03.11.2021 um 20:01 Uhr

We did not change anything

Nor did I.

I am using stock Chrome Version 95.0.4638.54 (Official Build) (64-bit) on Windows 10 20H2 with all updates through 10/14/21. I am connected to CenturyLink via wired megabit LAN, and the DNS server is 205.171.3.66

No "extensions" and no changes whatsoever since yesterday. And the NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID roadblock has returned to Android today, after being OK for a couple of days.

I know this must be frustrating for you, however I can assure you that my installation, internet service, and browsing habits have not changed, and my daily problem reports are accurate to a fault. Thank you again for taking these at face value: I share your puzzlement.

I actually had an image of a Traceroute to share with you, but I see image uploads to the forum are now borked again today....

Thanks for your ongoing concern.

Here is the traceroute for the first several hops, before it turns to all timeouts. Image uploads to the forum are again working this evening.

Here's a speedtest to a server in Berlin, Germany.

m2016 schrieb am 04.11.2021 um 12:11 Uhr

@Musicvid Your traceroute seems to be for the .com Domain which is not this website (.info). The com Website is managed via local DNS.

We did not and do not have anything in the code which ads ":/" to any urls etc. So if it happens again maybe retry it with another browser or device etc. Maybe any other software changes the contents of the clipboard. In Windows every running program can access and change the content of the clipboard.

The issue regarding Android is described in the other thread. There is nothing we can actually do. Your device is to old, you need Android >= 7.1.1 to have it working properly. You should have the same issue with other websites using letsencrypt certificates. It is not recommended to use those old devices with the internet because of the many many many security vulnerabilities they have. In some cases it is enough to get some evil code via an advert on a serious website to take over the complete device.

The workaround for older Android versions is active as in all other portals but not working atm, maybe it changes after the next extension end of the year; Why it is working sometimes is not clear so far but it has to do with your local device; I have the same strange behavior on an old 4.4 device.

Musicvid schrieb am 04.11.2021 um 16:01 Uhr

Thank you for the information. It was all working fine on both platforms until about the time other people started reporting problems with uploads and dysfunctional name resolution.

I haven't noticed any problems with other secure domains on Android, and I use several.. I get some privacy cautions when connecting to restaurant hotspots, etc., but those are expected.

I have never thought that you were doing anything on your end to cause these random misbehaviors, because there are other plausible explanations for everything that occurred. I reported them in case you were able to troubleshoot them from your end, and I apologize if my reports have been less than helpful. I haven't had a lot of IT experience since I shut down ovationplayers.com about 8 years ago, and I know things have changed a lot since then!

I have experienced similar periods of strange behavior with the browser/domain/backbone milieu in the past, and they have resolved more or less spontaneously after a period of weeks. It is not a hardship for me to use a different browser; I know you want your websites working on as many OS / Browser combinations as possible.

I have already installed Firefox on the Android due to one previous "storm," and I am comfortable with it as a backup when these things occur. I will experiment with different browsers on my PC, and use them when necessary.

The issue with invalid name resolution seemed to correct itself; however, I tested it repeatedly under different conditions before reporting it, using solid troubleshooting protocols.

I'll mark this thread Resolved as I have workarounds at hand. Thank you once again for your patient attention, and I will be certain to keep you informed if anything new comes to light.

btw, vegascreativesoftware.info resolves identically to the .com domain [52.58.251.166], and the traceroutes are identical.

Best Regards,
