VEGAS Pro Feature Requests

I would like an option to disable trimming from the project media window. It's too easy to select part of the file when clicking on the thumbnail to drag to the timeline. I don't really want to trim there as it isn't precise.

Some codec support for common HEVC file types that have been in use for a few years now in the pro camera world. This discussion points out the confusion on why these file types won't play properly in Vegas 18/19

1. Please fix the preview playback speed control on the timeline so that the audio frequency does NOT change when the speed is increased or reduced.

2. User-definable increments for J/L speed-control keys: ideally by creating a list of values for each additional pressing of J or L key.

For example: 0.5, 0.67, 0.85, 0.9, 1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, 2, 3, 5

K pauses and resets speed to 1 (while space/enter just toggles pause/play without changing the speed).

If starting at 1, then L increases to 1.1.
Next L increases to 1.2.
Next L increases to 1.3.
But then J decreases to 1.2 or whatever is the previous speed setting in the list
Next J decreases to 1.0
Next J decreases to 0.9
Next J decreases to 0.85
And pressing L again increases to 0.9, etc.

I can't think why the J key would be used to play backwards. But if someone really wants to do that then how about Shift J and Shift L for backwards playback (and with the same speed settings as defined by user as above)?

@gary-o
Point 2 could also be elegantly solved with a Shuttle Pro v2, for example.  There you also have a few keys to assign as an additional benefit.
I wouldn't want to do without mine.

I've been using Vegas for years and have summarized the things that made me uncomfortable. Please take a look. Lots of suggestions for Vegas

https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/lots-of-suggestions-for-vegas--131502/

The following is copied from that post (Mod)

I live in Korea and my English is not good, so I used Google Translate.

0. Greetings
I've been using Vegas Pro since I was 13.
When I was in middle school, I posted more than 100 courses on my personal blog.
Naver cafe video production, 10,000 subscribers game channel operation, etc.
Video editing is my passion.
And Vegas Pro is a partner that has grown with me for 14 years.

However, I have written this post because I have many regrets compared to my passion.
I've posted a similar suggestion before, but there are a lot of shortcomings
Organize, trim, and re-upload the material.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Subtitle system
There has been no significant change in the 10 years since the Pro Type Titler was created.
It is far behind the current times, and there are many cases where subtitle work is done outside.
The closed captioning feature in Vegas needs to be completely reversed.

1-1. font scroll
It is very inconvenient to choose a font in Vegas.
There are too many fonts that are omitted when you scroll down with the mouse wheel
You need to make detailed adjustments by clicking + dragging the scroll bar.
Because this method is too tedious
I wish it could be fine-tuned with the mouse wheel.

1-2. view font
In Photoshop or Excel, the shape of the font is shown in advance.
However, in Vegas, the same font is applied, so it is difficult to choose the font you want.

1-3. Background of Prototype Titler
This feature, so-called 'responsive subtitles' in Korea, lacks a lot.
There is not enough space between the text and the background, and the upper space feels narrow.
I would like to be able to adjust the margins of text and background.

1-4. thin border
The borders of the Pro Type Titler are too thin.
There is a way to apply it multiple times, but it seems to consume too much resources.
I would like the max to be a little higher.

1-5. Bad UI Design
Even a simple font change requires multiple taps in Vegas.
This waste of travel routes leads to inefficient work.
Please change the UI like Photoshop or Vegas image.

1-6. falling interactivity
I use an addon called Vegasaur for the efficiency of my work.
Among them, I often use the function to load subtitle files such as txt and srt.
Works well with legacy text, title & text
It doesn't work at all with the Protype Titler.

It also requires conversion between each subtitle function.
It may be difficult to convert the prototype titler to legacy text.
I think it's possible to turn legacy text into prototypes.
Please help shorten the subtitle editing time.

1-7. color palette
I am a user who is more comfortable with the Photoshop UI-based color palette.
The color palette of the prototype is uncomfortable.

Also, I want to use HSV instead of RGB as the default setting, but I have the inconvenience of clicking every time.

I wish I could change the default in option -> preferences etc.

1-8. We demand a subtitle system with a new identity
Legacy text: simple and lightweight
Title & Text: Animation
Pro-Type Titler: Enhanced design and editable layer (?) function for multiple subtitles

I think there will be many errors when changing existing functions.
It would be good to release a new subtitle function that comprehensively solves the above problems.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Preset function
This is a suggestion for the preset feature in Vegas.

2-1. Weak search function
It comes up to version 18 and has a favorites function, but there are many shortcomings.
You can collect frequently used functions in one place, but it is impossible to categorize them in detail.
I think this is an area where the likes and dislikes of users differ.

In version 17, if you enter a search term in Video FX, Transiton's search plug-ins,
Not only the FX name but also the preset values saved by the user are searched.
This part has disadvantages such as taking the first search time when using many plug-ins.
By using this, you can categorize your favorites in a granular way.

Let me explain it a little bit easier.
I save presets in Video FX using the initials of my nickname, gg.
GG: Most frequently used functions (22)
GEFF : Various special effects (39 pieces)
GFT : Filters, color gradings (31)
GTR: Transitions (16)

If you set a keyword according to the purpose and save a preset for each effect,
By entering keywords in the search box, you could simply categorize the effects by use.
However, after version 18, only the name of the effect is included in the search target.
Preset names are excluded, which is rather inconvenient.

However, if you register more than 100 favorites,
It will be difficult to see at a glance and the meaning of classification will be lost.

Because of this problem, I don't feel the need to update from the current version 17.

There are many other people who use this method besides me.
I think it will be inconvenient for advanced users who have purchased a lot of plugins.

Problem: The current favorites function is integrated in one place, so there is a lack of categorization.
Solution 1: Solution 1: Make searchable as before in option -> preferences
Solution 2: Create Favorites 1,2,3,4,5, etc. so that you can categorize them.

2-2. Preset Sort
When you save presets in Video FX, they are sorted by name.
However, if you save presets in Media Generator, they will be sorted in order of registration.

Preset names are easy to recognize
When saving Red Text 1~5, Yellow Text 1~5
If you save a new Red 6 preset,
Red Text 1~5, Yellow Text 1~5, Red 6
They are stored in this array.

The more subtitle presets you create, the more cluttered it becomes and the harder it is to categorize.
I have the know-how to solve this problem
I delete all the presets at regular intervals and save them one by one in order.
But it is very cumbersome.

Please allow the selection of the saved preset sorting method or unify them in name order.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. sfk file
This is a problem I have constantly felt while using Vegas.
When you load a file with sound, an sfk file is created.
If you disable the sfk from being created, the wave shape will not be visible in Vegas.

I don't want the source folder to get messy.

It would be nice if it was created in the specified path rather than the source path.

4. Media Generator Shortcut keys
When you don't want to zoom in by scrolling
In case of event pan/crop or FX window, right-click + shortcut key to open it.
Media Generator doesn't have shortcuts so it takes time.
please add

Thanks for reading this long post
For items 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, we hope that action will be taken quickly.

I don't know whether this has been requested before. If it has, I apologise.
This regards the Pan/Crop tool. At the moment, the grid only appears outside the pan/crop frame.
This makes it very difficult to manipulate masks by snapping.
Is it possible to make the grid appear fully over the workspace?

+1 Absolutely! But I'd have it as an overlay too and a Lined Grid as well. Maybe have a Slider to adjust its Luminosity too. We're dealing with Graphical manipulation. I need to be able to align items.

This certainly has something to do with the fact that the thread has now taken on enormous dimensions.
We should start a new one for V 20 - or someone will do the work (I doubt it) to clean up the present one and mark the points that have been settled. However, I believe that this approach is not even possible due to the forum software.

At this point I would like to remind the developers, or those responsible, of a long-forgotten thread - dealing with suggestions for improving the forum software - which I can't even find now.

Yes, I thought about something like that too, but Vegas Pro staff have said on the forum that VP19 will in the future evolve into incremental feature upgrades rather than continuing with the previous yearly new versions. To me, it seems like Vegas has adopted the BorisFX/FXHome approach of 12 months of updates/support after a purchase or re-activation to continue getting updates and support (I have no objection to that at all because you can continue using the product even if not renewing year-on-year - but just without access to updates and support). Yes, I know that both BorisFX and FXHome change the version and build numbers along the way, but from what I read into it, Vegas 19 will be something akin to Windows 10 where feature updates continue under the W10 banner and, as MS announced back in 2015 (?), W10 will be the last ever Windows version ... that is until Windows 11 dismantles MS' 2015 proclamation.

To me, it seems that Vegas Pro 19 will be around under that version name for quite some time. VP20 may be years off - or maybe it eventually becomes Vegas Pro without a version number.

This post started off in VP17 days as 'Vegas Pro 18 Feature Requests' and then was renamed to 'Vegas Pro 19 Features Requests' days after VP18 was released.

Yes, it is now a bloated post and perhaps now is a good time to create a new feature request post, but it will possibly attract a lot of repeat posts. Actually, I was surprised a year ago when the post continued on from VP18 to VP19 rather than a brand new post specifically aimed at VP19.

BTW, at 13 pages long, this is by no means the longest current post on the form. The longest I've seen is now 36 pages long ... https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/happy-otter-scripts-for-vegas-pro--113922/?page=36

And also BTW, this post - as I recall - started off in Off Topic but some time ago was moved to the Vegas Pro heading. It's now back at Off Topic.

So do I, especially when underlying languages that Vegas Pro used (.NET and C#) are cross-platform.

Because Vegas Pro have a similar workflow with Final Cut Pro, so the existing Final Cut Pro users won't be shocked when using Vegas Pro on Mac (software that they know, hardware that they deserve)

I am Brazilian, sorry for my English. 🤦‍♂️

🔺 Bugs and suggestions 🔺:

- In the darker interface, the frame indicator is not showing, please fix this.

- You still cannot rename an already saved Filter Pack, needing to delete and save again if you want to change the name.

- And when I move a Package from the Plug-In Manager to an event, the interface gets glitches.

- I don't like the look of the events (with the Event Header disabled, of course).
When the event is currently selected, it changes to white and gets a yellow outline. One suggestion: Instead of leaving everything white, keeping the same color as the selected event and just highlighting it with a white outline will look more modern.

- Interface is not yet fully responsive.
Dark theme but still remains clear.

- Alpha files made in Vegas, whether they are .AVI or .MOV will not work in Premiere. This is a big problem for collaboration in an agency. (I don't know if it's you, or Adobe I should talk to)

📣 Let's talk a little more about the Filter Pack. 💭
Some ideas.

- A good idea would be to be able to apply more than one package in one event, it could have an "apply/replace or add" option. Example: I want to apply a package, so I select it and click apply or double click if I clicked on the wrong package I can double click on the right one and it will replace it as it already is.
The "add" option would be for something like: I have a package where I did a keyframe animation with picture in picture but I also want to use a color correction package, so I could use two packages by clicking on "add" then the two effects would be applied to the event.

There are a lot of things that can be improved in the Filter Package and it is one of the resources that I use the most nowadays. It makes the work much faster.

- I have several package keyframe animations made with picture in picture, could there be a specific tool just for this, because I make some animations of custom elements entries, Example: A lower third entering and leaving the screen. So I could save the entry animation and the exit animation separately, then I could apply only the entry animation and enlarge the lower third for the time I would need it on screen and then apply the exit animation. Currently whenever I need to resize the event that I am using the animation for, I need to move all the keyframes to the end of the event, so the output gets the correct time.

🔺 List of things to urgently add to Vegas (In order of importance) 🔺:

- Adjustment Layers (It really disappointed me that you guys just made something official that you could already do in the previous version. We want an event that modifies the events below NOT THE WHOLE TIMELINE! This is not practical)
- Animation graphics (possibility to better handle keyframe animations)
- Multiple Timelines in the same project
- Improve Nested (Like, you can take any project and drop it inside another and it works fine, currently it STILL has problems with the image, a certain trace, ghost effect.... whatever)
- The possibility to be able to change the color of events individually, not the timeline (Don't need to change but give the possibility)

Yes, these ideas come directly from Adobe Premiere, but they are very useful items, and make a lot of difference in choosing which program to use. I've been using Vegas for 10 years, but knowing that the neighboring program has all these features makes me want to migrate. And many of my friends have stopped using Vegas because of the lack of these features as well.

But I am very pleased with the evolution Vegas is having from version 10 to now.

And that's all folks... 😉✌️

NESTED PROJECT TOOL

I use tons of Nested Projects in my master projects. Often the nested projects detach from their media files (which are usually the same media file(s)). Instead of having to reopen EVERY SINGLE NESTED PROJECT and then reattach to their media, we need the ability to select all the projects at once and tell them where to find their media, in one fell swoop.

I can't tell you how time-wasting the current process is.

In an update to VP19....

Bring back the option to have the old folder structure as was using in Vegas 17 and before, for Video FX, Transitions, etc.. Like the Plugin Manager, but with icons.

When you have a lot of plugins, the "new" way they are displayed is unproductive. You have to sift through many to try and remember which one you used. Yes, you can give them a "star" when you find it, but that is not the way Vegas Pro displayed them in the past.

I, and others are now forced to have Plugin Manager in the UI taking up "space", and no display of icons.

Currently Add Missing Stream does not work with Multichannel audio files. It would be great if it could.

For example

  • Video has 4 stereo audio tracks in it.
  • Add to timeline.
  • Ungroup and delete all 4 audio tracks.
  • Add Missing Stream.
  • Only audio track 4 is added.

Cheers.
