4k footage into 1080p timeline without downscaling

Hello, I shot some video footage at 4K resolution with the intention of bring it into a 1080p timeline project so that I could create zoom effects by scaling it down over a number of seconds. I hope that makes sense. The problem is, when I import the 4K footage into Vegas Pro it seems to have already been scaled down to 1080p since the timeline I'm working on is 1080p. My question is how can I get 4k footage to remain at 4K size while it's in the 1080p timeline?

In Event Pan/Crop, type in the actual video dimensions, instead of the project resolution.

Think I have that right.

Thanks, I will try that.

You have nothing to do about this, 4k in a 1080 timeline stays 4k, because the downscaling to 1080p will be done at the rendering, not on the timeline. You can perfectly zoom in with the pan crop tool on 4k footage in a 1080 timeline.

Yes, the only important one is to use Pan/Crop, not one of the other scaling FX because Pan/Crop is the only one affecting the media on its source size.

Thank you 3POINT and Marco. - you've confirmed that I've been doing it the correct way with 4K. Phew!

This is also true of 8k... even though Vegas can't render 8k, it can accept it, and it only gets downsampled to 4K or lower upon rendering. You can still crop in on it at 8k resolution before rendering.
