Advice needed: BlackMagic RAW in Vegas

JayM wrote on 8/27/2020, 12:37 PM

I'll be doing a 3 camera shoot for a podcast with the Blackmagic Pocket 6K cameras. My 2 options for codecs are ProRes and BRAW. ProRes is never fun in Vegas, but it does work.

My plan is to record 8:1 BRAW and color grade in DaVinci. I don't want to Edit in DaVinci. Vegas is fast and easy, and I don't have much spare time.

What should my workflow be? Should I color grade in DaVinci, and then export to a good intermediate codec that Vegas will love? I don't mind creating proxy files if I need to.

My PC is a 10th generation 8-core i7 with a 2080TI GPU. I want the project to be 4k resolution.

Thanks for your help!

For now, until VEGAS supports BRAW natively (it is on the way before too long), yes, that's the best way to go about it... export a prores or DNxHD (not sure what intermediates Resolve supports) file, and send it to VEGAS from there.

HQX works great as a handoff from Resolve to Vegas, also.

What will give me the best timeline performance in Vegas? HQX or DNxHD?

I predict HQX. DNx still uses old 32 bit QuickTime.

I decided to try Resolve since it's included with the camera. It's a steep learning curve, and has a few quirks. but overall I like it. I was able to edit a 3 cam 6K project without creating proxy files. In the edit tab, the frame rate is very poor, but all I need to do is click to the cut tab and I was able to get full frame rate to make sure my cuts are timed right.

I also did a quick little talking head video in Resolve. The speaker was wearing a shirt with a huge logo. I was able to very effectively remove it using the built in object removal tool.

the Fairlight tab for audio is pretty awesome. it's like a real DAW.

Nothing beats the speed and ease of Vegas, but Resolve is amazing for the price, and with BRAW, it was flawless, it never crashed.

I'll continue to use Vegas for most projects, especially audio editing. I just wish Vegas would support BRAW.

As @fr0sty said - it's on the way, just not available right now. I went the opposite of you - I can do EVERYTHING in Vegas now with the release of VP18 - I had given up on Vegas because of instability issues and begrudgingly was learning to edit and color grade in Resolve... If I were doing serious long form narrative film making, I MIGHT use Resolve, but Vegas is finally coming into it's own with the latest 18 release and I'm all the happier for it for editing my documentary work.

You can also try Happy Otter Scripts for Vegas. It should import your source, and preserve bit-depth with the Magic YUV Ultimate codec.
