Advice On Laptop for Video Editing (Looking to the Future)

robbif2 wrote on 5/8/2017, 11:51 AM

I'm looking (dreaming about) a new laptop. Dreaming because my good old IBM/Lenovo T60 (Windoze 7 Ultimate, 32-bit, 4GB, Core 2 1.83GHz), somewhat unfortunately, is hanging in there. It trudges along with VMS ver 11.

The good news: It's not my primary machine (Win7 Ult 64-bit, 8GB i7-2600 3.4 GHz, EVGA GEForce GTX560Ti)
which is working well with VMS 11, and hopefully eventually VMS 14.

However, if/when my laptop gives up, I want to be able to leapfrog my primary machine for video editing.

Currently I edit 1080i AVCHD from Canons G10 and G30 as well as 1080p MP4 from GoPro4-Silver. Again dreaming, I might eventually go for 4K....if I win the lottery and upgrade my camcorders.

I'm looking for recommendations for laptops capable of my dream. I've drooled over the Dell/Alienware products, especially the completely (re)configurable ones, but don't know if I need to go that far.

I haven't really researched yet, but would appreciate any advice. Maybe it would help others here too.

Thanks!
Fred

1. Minimal i7 processor
2. 2 Harddrives of your choise
3. for GPU: not only the Intell from the i7 but (also) a separate videocard

Laptop from my signature (4 years old) still suites me, also with 4 K, but in one or two years that one will be replaced for one with the same but upgraded components.

Thanks. I understood the basic configuration.
I forgot to mention I understood a separate (supported) GPU is critical.
I was looking for specific product examples to understand what's on the market.

I would go for something with Intel Core i5-7300HQ/i7-7700HQ quad core processor paired to a Nvidia 1050Ti/1060 for best video editing experience. Here is the list of best laptops for video editing which contains laptops of all budget.

Thanks C-N. I looked thru the list. Nice stuff. It's in my future, but unfortunately I didn't win the Powerball, so I'm gonna have to wait a while!

Many laptops have enough under the hood to do the job; concentrate on finding the absolute best screen you can, you'll be spending a lot of time looking at it...

This laptop has a very good screen but is the rest enough for editing in Vegas 15?

Dell XPS 15 9560 i7 16GB 512GB PCIe SSD UHD/4K Touch

Yes but check out the benchmarks at tomshardware

Hint: Video performance for gaming has little to do with editing or rendering performance.

You will want a big storage drive to go with it.

As I'd stated at the beginning of this topic, I wasn't in the market yet. Now I'm almost considering it. The battery on my little Lenovo T60 died, and although I'll get another battery, the writing is on the wall. I was especially tempted my this offer and wanted you opinions...

No separate SSD?
The rest OK is my opinion.

Thanks. I did read in the Best Buy replies there is a slot for an SSD. I think the model is available somewhere with the SSD for a higher price. I just chatted with Best Buy and they said the sale price end is not available.

Well Folks,
Here's a belated update and thanks. In August I bit the bullet and am very satisfied!

---------------------------------------------------------

From Newegg...
1 x ($1,582.99) NEW Dell XPS 15 9560 i7-7700HQ 16GB 512GB PCIe SSD UHD 4K Touch GTX1050
FingerPr - OEM

Color: Silver  CPU Type: Intel Core i7 7th Gen  Screen Size: 15.6"  Touchscreen: Yes
Operating System: Windows 10 Home  SSD: 512 GB  Memory: 16 GB
$1,582.99

-----------------------------------------------------------

Now that I'm 90% over the Win 10 learning curve, I've found this system to be a reasonably-priced match!

I've found it renders my videos a little over 4% faster than my tower....more than satisfactory since it will not be my primary editing machine. It handles VMS15 editing and rendering very well. It more than replaced my old Lenovo T60, to say the least!

The 4K touch screen is gorgeous! To my surprise (and probably not many of you), apps such as Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 don't know how to display on 4K. After some fixes and taking the advice to switch screen res down to 1920x1080 - after which I can't tell the difference(!), I'm breathing easily now.

Thanks for your advice that paid off big!
