Alternative to makeup for bad complexion?

MikeLV wrote on 4/23/2020, 10:14 AM

I have a subject that has a bad facial complexion, and doesn't like the way they appear under the bright soft box lights. The subject does not want to wear makeup for the video. Is there anything we can do? Technically, I don't have enough light as it is as I have to adjust levels in Vegas to make them correct, so lowering light isn't an option. Thanks for any suggestions.

NewBlueSkinTouchUp served me well in the past.

Does it automatically recognize and track the face, or is that something that has to be key framed?

@MikeLV … BorisFX has Beauty Studio FX in its Image Restoration BCC Unit. This FX has Mocha inbuilt (as most BCC FX do) to enable planar tracking. The object to be tracked can be manually keyframed but Mocha also allows for snapping keyframing or paint-brushing the area to be tracked. Some adjusting during the tracking process may be required, but that depends very much on how the tracked area stands out from the surrounding image. For example, tracking a lightly flesh-colored face against a dark bg is almost certainly going to be tracked much more easily than tracking the same face against a similarly colored pastel bg.

Also, using Mocha within Beauty Studio allows for select areas of the face to be tracked. For example, just the chin can be tracked, and another track of just the forehead can also be undertaken in the same Mocha session. Of course, the settings used in the Beauty Studio FX plugin will apply to both tracks.

There are some videos on BorisFX's website re this FX:

Put a clear (UV) filter over your lens. The smear the slightest bit of Vaseline on the filter. The soft focus/glow effect under good lighting has fixed untold blemishes for portrait photograpers for over a century. The effect can be very flattering when done judiciously.

@Musicvid ... an example of way overdoing this was on Lucille Ball's close-ups in the 1974 film, "Mame". One of the comments on IMDb re this film noted that there was so much Vaseline and filters used, you'd need to use some Windex in order to get to see her face in some scenes.

Not to mention the "Wellington" makeup in the b/w tv series, which I know well.

That statement you made cracks me up!
