Applying LUT to clip has no effect

T-Co wrote on 10/15/2019, 9:05 PM

I put a "LUT Filter" effect on a video clip and applied a LUT file (.cube) to it, but it doesn't do anything and the video has no difference regardless of 'strength' setting. The effect is enabled and not bypassed in any way. LUTs also do nothing when applied with the color grading tool. They are purchased LUTs, so they should work, and I have used them on other computers without issue.

I am running Vegas Pro 17 build 321 on an i5-8400 processor with integrated graphics. I can run the same LUTs on another computer with the same Vegas version on it normally, so it must be some sort of setting relating to how it works with the PC hardware - at least that's what I'm thinking. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks!

"a video clip?"

LUTS are not meant for 8 bit 2.2 gamma, which your clip probably is.

Excuse me - I mean "media event" as opposed to "clip." The footage is shot to be used with Cine4 LUTs, which I am using. However, either way, the LUTs should show an effect on the video regardless of whether it's the correct bit depth, and there is some sort of bug/setting preventing that on one of my computers.

It works on one computer but not another?

Just on the off chance, in the past when I applied a LUT to a clip in Vegas 16 nothing seemed to happen, the change only "took effect" when I closed the Fx window. Do you see a change happen when you close the Fx window?

That's a good quirk to know about, thank you! I actually got it figured out - turned out to be a "duh" moment. I had my self going through the "_MACOSX" folder and picking 1kb .cube files that are presumably for some sort of Mac formatting, etc (just included in the folder of the downloaded LUTs). But anyway, using the correct LUT files, it does seem to work normally. I can see the 'strength' fader applying the LUT to my video preview as would be expected.

I sort of jumped to a conclusion because I've had an issue with the Vegas 17 Warp Flow not working on one of my computers, in which case I had to go to my video preferences and turn off "GPU acceleration video processing." So I thought this may be a similar situation somehow relating to the system, but turned out to be just an incorrect file - oops!

Thank you for the help though!

Hi! LUTs are not working in the LUT filter on my new machine with Vegas Pro 17. I just opened a project from last year, edited in VP16 and many of the files looked dull. Turned out to be the LUT filter not finding the LUTs that were applied. I hadn't copied in the LUTs from theold machine to the new. So I did and directed the LUT filter in Vegas to the location. It finds the LUTs but nothing happens with the video, no change at all. I made sure the effect box is checked, I closed the effect window, tried different LUTs, different formats, mostly cubes but also dll. Rebooted. Nothing works. There is no error message in Vegas, it just doesn't apply any difference to the video.

Any tips?

You sure the Split Screen View isn't ticked?
