Are my rendering times acceptable?

TomBoss wrote on 6/11/2017, 10:12 AM

Hello,

I'm using Movie Studio 14 Platinum and would like to know if my rendering times conform to the norm or if they're maybe a bit slow.

Source file (recorded gameplay footage):
- 13 minutes
- 5.13 GB
- MPEG-4 / AVC
- 1080p
- 60 fps
- 54.2 Mb/s

Render settings:
- MainConcept AVC
- High Profile
- 60 fps
- 2 reference frames
- Two-pass
- Variable bit rate
- Maximum 30Mb/s
- Average 15Mb/s
- 4 slices
- Progressive download enabled

I'm using Windows 10 with the Intel i7-6700k CPU.

Rendering this file took me 1 hour and 45 minutes. Is that acceptable? Also, if you've got any tips on optimizing my render settings - feel free!

Thanks in advance.

Looks slow but what FX etc are you applying to your source?

Only the "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" preset in Sony Levels.

Again, I'm doing a two-pass encode.

In addition to a levels filter, you are applying generated media. That is a significant timeline FX. Every pixel of every frame gets rendered. Thus your render times are entirely normal and expected.

What do you mean by "generated media"? I'm not putting any text over my video.

I don't know ... My videos are usually about 40 minutes long, after editing. Stock footage is from a Canon video camera (actually 2) MP4 @ 35Mbps 60p. There are 2 videos in the timeline, generally between 4 and 7 clips for each video track, using a PIP effect, with a border around the PIP, text media running throughout and transitions between each clip. Rendering to Sony MVC @ 26Mbps 60p only takes about 50 - 60 minutes. I am not using dedicated graphics card, it's the intel HD graphics 630 on my I7 processor.

It actually renders faster with the intel graphics then when I had a dedicated NVidia card. That's one reason I ditched the graphics card. Watching the preview window, it's rendering about 60 frames/sec, almost real-time.

When I render to 1280 x 720 60p 6Mbps for my iPhone, it's faster than real-time.

I know this topic is quite old but I wanted to tell everyone that I boosted my rendering times significantly by deactivating the GPU acceleration of my GTX 1070 in the options. Apparently, Vegas doesn't support newer graphic cards so activating this option is not recommended. Maybe this will help someone else.

And your proof for this statement is ???????????
