audio preferences

Amy-Kasper wrote on 10/4/2020, 11:12 AM

I just downloaded and installed Movie Studio 17 Platinum and when trying to play back within the program I get the following error: The playback device Microsoft Sound Mapper does not exist.

I am running Windows 10, 64-bit, and have the following sound card: RealTek High Definition Audio SST.

When I go to audio preferences within the Movie Studio 17 program, that sound card is not one of the listed options. The only options I see listed are:

Microsoft Sound Mapper

Direct Sound Surround Mapper

Windows Classic Wave Driver

Magix Low Latency 2016

Any suggestions on what I should do to fix the problem? Additionally, I hear static now, when I try to play any sounds on my computer, since installing Movie Studio 17. This includes existing video and audio files. I now even hear static when I try to play music through Spotify. I can fix the static problem by running the trouble shooter in windows setting. But, the static problem returns after trying to use Movie Studio 17.

Thanks!

Did you try to select another one to use in the program?

F.i. if I use the Microsoft Sound Mapper I see no problems in my VMS 17 Pl.

He meant to say Options->Preferences->Audio Device

Amy-Kasper wrote on 10/5/2020, 8:33 AM

I have now tried all of the options under "Option->Preferences->Audio Device":

Microsoft Sound Mapper

Direct Sound Surround Mapper

Windows Classic Wave Driver

Magix Low Latency 2016

None of the above 4 options worked. All resulted in either the program crashing or not being able to play the added video or audio.

Any other suggestions on what I should do?

I'm able to use them all on my laptop with VMS 17 Pl.
These are the used drivers for the Windows ones

maybe you have to renew yours?

I just checked and for any windows updates and I am completely up to date for my laptop, which I just purchased last year.

Check for updates from your audio device manufacturer.

You should be using Direct Surround Sound Mapper.

Thanks for the suggestion and for all your time in trying to help me. I did check for updates for my laptop's sound card and was told:

"The best drivers for your device are already installed"

Again, I have the RealTek High Definition Audio SST. Any additional thoughts?

Thanks, EricLNZ. I just tried that (i.e., default reset) and the software is still crashing. Any other thoughts?

This is a little more complex, but do a system backup, remove your audio device from Device Manager, and reboot, letting Windows find it again. You've got system restore to cover your back.

[First time poster]

@Amy-Kasper Did you find a solution to your static problem?

In my research, I've discovered that something in the Movie Studio Platinum 15 or 17 default settings (even after reset) causes this problem even for new projects. I've been unable to determine what that is specifically.

The only workaround I've found is to change a setting on the Speakers Properties. For Windows 10:

Settings -> Sound (Output) -> Device Properties -> Additional device properties

On the Advanced tab change the default format from (for me) 24 bit, 48000Hz to 16 bit, 48000Hz. Press Test to confirm no more static. (Fingers crossed!)

This is a pain in the neck to do every time I launch MS, but it's all I have at the moment.

Any pointers from the experts would be most welcomed!
