Audio / soundtracking in Vegas Pro? (dv editing)

ric-kemp wrote on 1/30/2017, 7:30 PM

Hi,

How versatile is Vegas Pro with sound please? For example, can I stack several wav files that I need to weave in and out of please - raising sound in one, then lowering sound in the next one - like fading several wav sound effects into & out of an overall audio mix for a video soundtrack?

Thanks

Yes, Vegas is a very good audio editor and can perform mixing of multiple audio tracks that you are describing.

You have unlimited audio and video track in Vegas Pro.

In fact, when first time released, Vegas 1.0 was a multi-track audio application.

Thanks, have loaded a wav soundtrack to my video which also registers on the Vegas clip meters, I have both usb and standard speakers which I have tested and are working fine, but there is absolutely no sound coming from my video - how do I enable audio in Vegas please, and how do I edit the audio line, there do not appear to be controls on the audio line?

ric-kemp wrote on 1/31/2017, 1:58 PM

This is ridiculous, I have Sony Soundforge which I use a lot. I have never had to ask anyone how it works - what is the problem with Sony Vegas Pro audio please?

ric-kemp wrote on 1/31/2017, 2:28 PM

What is a 'Null Wave Mapper' on my Vegas 13 please? Do I edit with it? Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing? Is it missing as in 'null & void'? Does Vegas require a separate audio editor? Will it take Sound Forge? Should I load Sound Forge to my pc please?

There is a screenshot of my project (below) plus audio wave clearly visible in it - can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? I rendered the project to a Windows compatible video file and the audio plays great on play back, but I can't hear it in Vegas 13 so I can't edit it. Help appreciated. I have now spent hours just trying to listen back to my video soundtrack http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/o1kric1/Vegas%20audio%20screenshot_zpsmwhfvz6x.jpg

Are you running Windows 10? Does your soundcard have windows 10 drivers?

You mean I can watch and listen to my Vegas-rendered video on this pc and yet have no Windows 10 soundcard drivers? I'm sorry, I don't understand how this would be possible? Please explain.

ric-kemp wrote on 1/31/2017, 3:14 PM

What is your source video? What codec is the audio track of that video?

It is a wav file. The source video - here is the screenshot - the AVI is an Open DML http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/o1kric1/carter%20codec_zps3p6yzs1x.jpg

I think your DV file might be AVI type 1, while Vegas Pro expects AVI type 2. The difference between type 1 and 2 is how the audio stream is integrated.

Then you'd need to re-wrap your DV video into a type 2 AVI.

You could try if you can install and run one of this DV AVI type converter:

The major difference here is that I can see Vegas playing my soundtrack in the stereo clip meters, only nothing comes out of my speakers.

Thanks, but why don't I just master the soundtrack in the type 1 AVI authoring software then fine-edit the video visuals in Vegas please?

Can I isolate or detach the soundtrack from the edit-split procedure, so that I can apply filters to parts of the visuals in Vegas without disturbing the audio file soundtrack?

Musicvid wrote on 2/1/2017, 1:13 PM

the AVI is an Open DML

That is Type 2 DV-AVI, ust what Vegas expects.

So why can't I hear anything please? Everything else I play on the pc comes out the speakers, the rendered video has audio that I can listen to, but the Vegas project is silent, even though the clip meters are active and I can turn them up or down, because I am seeing the audio levels, but nothing comes out the speakers. :-|

Meters reading but no sound to soundcard suggests Vegas is not connected to correct soundcard.

I saw earlier you have Audio Device Type = "Microsoft Sound Mapper" selected in Audio Preferences; are there any other choices available? If so, have you tried those? (sometimes you have to re-start Vegas after changing those Preferences)

Marco. wrote on 2/1/2017, 2:54 PM

"That is Type 2 DV-AVI"

OpenDML is AVI 2.0 but it does not determine whether that AVI 2.0 is type 1 or type 2. It could be AVI 2.0 type 1. Midst in DV ages people had lots of trouble with audio when using AVI 2.0 type 1.

Though I think what ChristoC wrote might be better approach as Vegas meters displaying audio levels fine.

ric-kemp wrote on 2/1/2017, 4:25 PM

Thanks but I think Vegas is round the twist here. In this screenshot my project has the same audio file but this time loaded to the video in Serif (edit software), it plays fine in the Vegas editor and renders fine as well. Yesterday's project has no audio at all any more, Vegas stripped it out - that's despite methodically saving the project. I have no idea why Vegas rejects individual wav files but accepts them when they are wedded to a video. It means at the moment I have to do all my audio editing in another video-edit software. http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d41/o1kric1/audio%20via%20serif%20is%20okay_zpsejmjj3fs.jpg

How about sharing such a file which does not work so we could test with our Vegas installations.

set wrote on 2/1/2017, 4:45 PM

I never had any of this issues... so this is really weird... btw, where this DV file came from? what is your process on having this file and what device do you use to capture these files from tape ?

Yes, the best thing is to try share one of small DV file to Dropbox / Google Drive / WeTransfer / etc. and we can try test it on our systems.
