AVI videos not playing

Parker-Lansing wrote on 10/2/2020, 11:35 AM

I am using a newly purchased version (Build 179) of VEGAS Movie Studio Platinum 17.0 for Windows 10 64bit. With it I can import but not play AVI videos. Many people seem to have this problem and the only fix I find is to download a codec. That is not something I want to download from a second or third party that isn't recommended by someone familiar with them. If this is the cause of the problem, how can I fix it?

Legitimate sources for the MJPEG codec include Mainconcept (trial), Morgan, and PicVideo. Do not download a codec "pack."

Personally, I just recommend converting your file in Handbrake, an easy and trusted solution.

@Parker-Lansing Of interest, where did your avi files come from?

From my Bushnell Trail cam. I wrote to Bushnell but haven't heard back. I could convert the files to another format using AVC but other formats don't come out as well as the original AVI.

I could take the time to convert these videos but I shouldn't have to. I paid for a Video Editing program and it should work with an AVI.

I used Handbrake to convert the video to MKV and that won't even import! At least the AVI will import but won't play.

MKV, a newer wrapper, will not import into Vegas Pro 17. MP4 will, I've done it for a decade. Use Same as Source, Constant Frame Rate on the Handbrake Video tab, and it will work for you, as well.

If you want MJPEG AVI to open in Vegas, find a copy of the Mainconcept trial from a legitimate source. It will decode your files, but only encodes mjpeg with a watermark. Within Vegas, you can easily encode to MP4. which is exactly what Handbrake does. It's your choice.

But do stick around. There is a lot more.

Back in the days of common DV-AVI yes. But avi is just a container and nowadays a variety of codecs, sometimes unsuitable, get used inside it.

Edit: Already better explained by Musicvid.

No, probably better explained by you, @EricLNZ

A simple question deserves a simple answer. At least the OP now has multiple options that do not require spending more $.
