Building a new PC for my son's birthday. Video card question.

Noel wrote on 2/9/2019, 9:10 AM

Hi all,

/!\ Warning. Newbie here, and yes I did search this forum for "GPU + Vegas Pro 16", but till now not with much luck.

My son will be 16 soon and I would like to give him as present a new PC. (he does not know about this)
Till now he has been editing on a laptop. It can handle 1080p (just), but anything above this is a no go.

The PC I would like to build will be a dedicated system especially for editing with Vegas Pro 16.
According to what I've found on the forum is that AMD is the way to go. (personally I do not like AMD as I've got some bad experience with AMD)

Anyway. My son would like to be able to finally edit his 4K videos.

It has been asked already many times here, and I'm going to ask again :-/ What video card should I get?
The CPU I'm thinking of is something like a i7 level (eight-core). This could be AMD or Intel. (mainly depending on video card / GPU)
Memory 32GB and of course SSD storage.

The budget I've got for this PC is around 1500 euro.

I really hope someone here can push me in the right direction!

Thank you.

Here's what Magix posts about Graphic cards for VP16:

Graphics card: Supported NVIDIA®: For hardware rendering (NVEnc), GeForce 9XX series or higher with 4 GB; AMD/ATI®: Radeon with 4 GB and VCE 3.0 or higher (Radeon Pro series with 8 GB for HDR and 32 bit projects) or Intel®: GPU HD Graphics 530 series or higher.

Personally, I like NVDIA cards and Intel CPU for long term reliability - but AMD will definitely give you more power for less euros. It may turn out that AMD does prove itself dependable over the long run.

If you go with an AMD CPU, I'd go with an AMD graphic card.

Go for the best cpu and good graphics, not the other way around for video editing.

The rendering (not gaming) benchmarks at Tomshardware are a good place to look for specific model comparisons.

If he is a competitive gamer and you have that kind of budget, do both. At least he will retain bragging rights, which seem really important to that generation, (and older). [cough /]...

Both is working good for Vegas Pro.
I bought my laptop from signature mid 2017. It is a so called Asus ROG (Republic of Gamers) laptop that costed me € 1100, and for € 100 more my manufacturer build in a bigger harddisc (2TB) and a bigger SSD (250MB).
I'm very satified with it, it previews very fluently 4K AVC video without proxies in best/full preview. It renders very fast with the NVENC options of the NVidia Geforce GTX 1050 in the Magix codecs.

Thank you all for the info. @Musicvid He is definitely (pity for me) not a gamer :-)
I'll report back when I've made my decision.

Once again thank you all...

Okay. I did some more research and I think a "MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC" should manage the 4K editing fine. They also have a "MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X 4G". Only difference between the two is the color and that the gaming version has a higher boost / base clock and memory frequency.

Any of you guys here who can confirm that a MSI GeForce GTX 1050 Ti will be fine?

That model gets mentioned a lot here.

I assume that's the same as listed in my signature I have on my desktop, also very satisfied with my desktop and working with Vegas all versions from Vegas Pro 10 and VMS 10 till the latest ones of both.

Maybe also consider an AMD Rx 580 (8gb VRAM). Gets good reviews for Vegas (look for the Techgage article) and can be had second hand for quite cheap (in Canada around 170 CAD).

@Kinvermark I'll look into it, and thank you for helping!
