Can anyone give tips on layer masking

I've been using VEGAS 14 for 3 months. I already familiarize myself with the color correction tools. However, I have yet to try layer masking. I need to know this, because I don't want to go overboard with my skin tones Anyone here can give me tips?

I can't find, on YouTube, the tutorial of the correction that I wanna do, which is isolating skin tones.

If you take your editing serious, consider investing in BCC with Mocha motion tracking. Comparatively, the OFX version used by Vegas is pretty reasonable.
