Codec bit rate for future generations

Over the course of 10+ years, I’ve created nearly 300 short (3 to 15 minute) “amateur” videos, family celebrations, graduations, weddings, and vacations. I upload them to Vimeo where anyone can see them, but my primary audience is my family and future generations. It is my plan to leave them the original MP4 files. Do these render settings seem reasonable for family level (non-broadcast) distribution?

Vegas Pro 13

Codec: MP4 MainConcept 2 Pass

Resolution: Full HD (1920x1080)

Bit Rate: VBR Average 28 Mbps, Maximum 35 Mbps

30p or 60p? It makes a differemce.

In any case, try comparing those numbers to a render with them both cut in half, and see how much difference you'll see on Vimeo. I'm thinking maybe not much.

My frame rate setting is 30fps (progressive).

I based my settings by testing. I rendered a clip with settings from 1Mbps, 2Mbps, all the way to 28Mbps. I found that at 14Mbps I could see no improvement in quality (artifacts, etc.), so to be sure, I doubled the rate to 28Mbps. I figured memory and processor speed will only increase, so I thought 28Mbps was a good guess.

I know 4K is here and 8K is coming along with 60fps, but my goal is keeping it simple and still provide reasonable quality.

Rich it is important to eyeball the delivery not the source. You may be overcompensating because Vimeo delivers nothing close to 35 Mbps at 1080 p30.

The collateral is longer render, upload, and upstream processing times, and the only advantage is if you can see a difference online.
