Color Saturation

paul-whitlock wrote on 2/22/2018, 6:24 PM

I just loaded VP 15, Build 311, and started on a new project. Every video clip and still image I load into the project shows on the preview screen as oversaturated - the reds are too red, the blues too blue, etc. Is there a setting somewhere that needs adjusting, to bring the image back to the original color balance?

Thanks.

Do you use 8 bit or floating point project settings?

What is your project's pixel format setting?

Camcorder: Panasonic X1500 + Panasonic X920 + GoPro Hero 11 Black

Desktop: MB: MSI B650P, CPU: AMD Ryzen 9700X, RAM: G'Skill 32 GB DDR5@6000, Graphics card: MSI RX6600 8GB, SSD: Samsung 970 Evo+ 1TB (NVMe, OS), HDD WD 4TB, HDD Toshiba 4TB, OS: Windows 10 Pro 22H2

NLE: Vegas Pro [Edit] 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 18, 19, 22

32-bit floating point (full range)

Then switch back to 8 bit which is the default for good reason.

Thanks, fifonik. I just changed pixel format to 32-bit floating point (Video levels) and problem is solved.

Marco. wrote on 2/22/2018, 6:47 PM

Are you sure floating point is useful for you in any way? 8 bit normally serves well instead.

paul-whitlock wrote on 2/22/2018, 6:56 PM

Marco, I don't understand the difference. Switching to 8-bit also works for my preview color balance. Is it better than 32-bit, if that also works?

paul-whitlock wrote on 2/22/2018, 6:57 PM

Why is 8-bit preferable to 32?

Marco. wrote on 2/22/2018, 7:16 PM

That's a complex topic. So I often tend to ask vice versa: What do you think is the advantage of floating point?

The disadvantage is, floating point will slow down your preview and in some cases it could cause stability problems. It completely oversizes video processing in many cases. So if somebody does not use floating point processing for a very certain reason it is recommended to use 8 bit processing (which is the default setting).

Try it and if you are lucky with 8 bit - stay with 8 bit (for the sake of saving system power).

OK, thanks, Marco. 8-bit it is.

OK, thanks, Marco. 8-bit it is.

With the distinction that if if shows up clipped in the histogram, it should be leveled sensitively to your output colorspace, presumed to be 16-235.

paul-whitlock wrote on 2/23/2018, 4:57 PM

Right, thanks, Musicvid. Yes, the histogram did show a little consistent bias. This was corrected with a small adjustment in Brightness/Contrast; yes, 16-235.

Glad you are aware of this, and imo the Levels fx provides more accurate control over I/o levels than brightness/contrast.

Yes, tried Levels and there is more control available. Thanks for the advice.
