Correcting variable framerate video

I have some long recordings of a conference that seem to have been made with a variable bit rate, so the audio does not stay in sync when I drop the recording onto the timeline. The files are mp4 but when I check them with mediainfo they show as Variable bit rate, and the video frame rate is showing non-standard rates (29.586, 29.71, 29.523, etc.).

Here's one example of the video info: VIDEO: 1 331 Kbps, 1920*180 (16:9), at 29.523 fps, AVC (Main@L4) (CABAC / 4 Ref Frames)

If I simply play the files on a Mac using Quicktime, the A/V sync is fine throughout, it just when I drop them onto the timeline so that I can cut them up into shorter segments that I have this problem with the audio sync.

Any suggestions?

Re-encode in Handbrake is the most commonly used solution.

With Handbrake set to constant framerate ofcourse.
