Desktop Soooo Tiny

HSA wrote on 2/3/2022, 5:02 PM

Running Movie Studio 12.0 and the menus and everything on the desktop is so tiny I can't read it! This is not an issue in any of my other software, including another video editing software. How do I change this without changing my entire system settings?

ETA I can see some of it...but nothing in the timeline of the movie and nothing in the checkboxes of the popup menu. They are all too small. This is what I need to change.

Has this always been an issue (MS12 would have to be about 9 years or so old) or have you recently upgraded your monitor to a 4K model? If the latter, I get fairly much the same with Movie Studio Platinum 13 on a 4K monitor, and MSP13 doesn't have any hi-rez monitor display options under Options/Preference/Display. Even years later in Vegas Pro 16, High-DPI scaling for 4K monitors was only experimental at the time.

If it is a 4K monitor issue, you may have to alter your Windows display settings when using MS12.

Set your Windows text size higher. As @Dexcon says, Movie Studio 12 was never designed for UHD displays.

Thank you for the suggestion. I increased my text size to 175%. This increased my menu size at the top quite a bit but the text down the left side is still very tiny; it is not increasing with the rest of the text. This is the text I need to be able to read. Any other ideas?

I don't know if this makes a difference, but I am using a Microsoft Surface Pro 8 with Windows 11.

Unless the specs for the MS Surface Pro 8 vary region to region, the display for that unit is likely to be:

  • Screen: 13” PixelSense™ Flow Display
  • Resolution: 2880 x 1920 (267 PPI)

So the display's resolution is about half way between HD and 4K in H and W pixel counts, actually a bit over half because while the W is 1.5 times HD's 1920, the H is more than 1.5 times HD's 1080. So sadly that's still going to cause problems for Movie Studio 12 without high-DPI scaling, particularly on a small 13 inch screen.

I'm not whether or not the more recent versions of Movie Studio have high-DPI scaling, but unfortunately the Movie Studio line was discontinued in July last year so its not possible to upgrade to Movie Studio 17 through MAGIX, but you might still find MS17 on sale through legitimate online resellers. Just a caution, if you see Movie Studio 2022 on MAGIX's / Vegas's website, it is a completely different product and should be consdiered as a crossgrade to a different program rather than as an upgrade.

A consideration might be to upgrade to Vegas Pro 19 but first check out the minimum specifications for VP19 - https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/us/specifications/#productMenu and note the difference in the recommendations for editing HD and 4K, and compare them to your Surface Pro's specs in relation to which format that you are currently or intending to edit. There's also a trial version of Vegas Pro 19 that you might consider trying out.

Thank you for all your help! That is correct about the Surface display. I guess I will do the trial version of Vegas Pro 19 and see how that works on my Surface.
