Do AE Video Plugins work in VP16? Is there no standard plugin format?

I'm relatively new to the video side of Vegas Pro and am coming from an audio background.

I'm currently, shopping around for some Video Plugins to use with VP16. I'm starting to come to a realization that video plugins seem to be supported on a per host basis. Is this correct? I'm basing this assumption on that I've seen multiple versions of the same plugin where it shows there's an AE and FCP version. There's no similar standard plugin format for video plugs like DX, or VST for the audio plugins?

What I'm also starting to see is that most of the officially Vegas pro video supported plugins go back to VP13 and past that it's looking like most of the 3rd party vendors stopped supporting Vegas versions of their plugins.

I just watched this video and noticed the guy selected to us the Adobe AE supported video plugins of GenArts Sapphire plugin. Can I therefore make a general assumption that if I try out the AE supported version of plugins from other vendors that I would have a high probability they would work in VP16? I'm trying to find some kind of video plugin standard where there seems to be no standard.

P.S. I've seen the Nick Hope plugin compatibility list and while somewhat useful, I found it to be relatively confusing in that it seems like it is focused towards video plugins which came bundled in Vegas prior versions and trying to show if they work in the newer versions. I could be wrong, but I don't think that list helps me.

Vegas supports non-proprietary OFX and older DirectX plugins, but trial them before you buy.

AE plugins are proprietary, to my understanding.

Sort of. As Music vid says, the common standard is OFX, but sometimes there will be a bug in one app, but not in another. Over time plug-in vendors fix these issues, but it is important to download a trial to confirm.

I don't think so. Red giant stopped some plug-ins (Colorista?), but many, many vendors support Vegas either directly or through OFX. e.g. Boris, Sapphire, Revision fx, Filmconvert, Pixelan, ProDad, etc, etc.

No. Although there is a lot of overlap, AE is quite different from any NLE (including Vegas) so those versions may be modified for AE use or there may have been past licensing / promotional arrangements that complicate the situation. (e.g. Mocha AE)

Best is to trial the version intended for Vegas, typically the OFX version.

"and older DirectX plugins"

S o m e... older DirectX audio plugins.. As I've stated elsewhere, my old (but still great sounding) Sonitus Ultrafunk DX plugins do not run (or even show up) on 64 bit versions of Vegas and Sound Forge. Same with the DirectX iZotope mastering suite I and II.'

For sure, try any out if they're not free

Yes, should have included qualifier.

OFX is the standard Video plugin format. Thanks!

I guess I'm confused as to the reason Video plugins intended for use in Adobe showed up and worked in Vegas 16 as shown in the video. I can say with a 100% certainty that audio plugins intended to support TDM for Protools won't show up or work in VP16.

I posted a question to the Youtube channel, maybe he'll have an explanation as to why he chose the Adobe version of Sapphire instead of the OFX version. Seems like an odd thing to do.

Yes, I can see how that would be very confusing. Either for some strange reason Boris/Sapphire uses a unified installer so it doesn't matter, or JustAlex has made a mistake. Let us know if he replies. YouTube, pah! :)
