Dragging a iphone .mov file into Vegas timeline

MediumDave wrote on 12/20/2016, 11:50 PM

I have an Iphone 5s and I am able to drag the .mov files from it into Sony Vegas Pro 13.  Version 13.0

I have made a .mov file in the same phone it it 4.7gb about 40 minutes long.  It won't drag out of the explorer window in Vegas.  It also doesn't show all the attributes at the bottom of the explorer like the other .mov files.  What do I need to do to get to recognize it's attributes and be dragged onto the timeline.  I'm on Win 7 64 bit Professional. I7 3770 with 32 Gbytes of Ram. 4 terrabyte drive Sata III 7200 rpm. System drive is Solid State Crucial with 250 Gbyte.

Will the MOV from the iPhone file play normally in a media player like VLC or Windows Media Player?

You could try rewrapping the .mov file to .mp4 with FFmpeg, and that can be done in a batch. See here: https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/intermittent-apple-quicktime-playback-issue--104830/#ca648027

Yes. If I click on the file it will open in Windows Media Player and play.

Yes. Nick I have downloaded Zeranoe FFmpeg from a link in one of the posts associated with your reply here. I'm new with the command line prompt. I'm a little green with this stuff. I unzipped and click on the ffmpeg file in the BIN folder. My computer said Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk. Don't Run.

Am I doing the right thing, I don't run to hose my computer?

Did you try to Import the file into Vegas from the FILE menu rather than from Explorer window? Worth a shot. FILE/IMPORT/MEDIA

Otherwise, HANDBRAKE, in my opinion, is a great program (safe and free) to convert the file to some other format that will open in Vegas. MP4 ?

No. ffmpeg.exe file is not run by clicking it. It's accessed by typing it in a command prompt window.

First add it to your path so it can be found from any location.

Then open a command prompt and type in that line such as this:

ffmpeg -i inputfilename.MOV -vcodec copy -acodec copy outputfilename.mp4

The instructions here seem pretty good: http://adaptivesamples.com/how-to-install-ffmpeg-on-windows/

If it's working for a single file then you can make a batch file as described here to convert a whole batch and then you can double click on that to run it.

Try changing the file extension from .mov to .mp4 and see if Vegas Pro will open it. It's just AVC/H.264 in a QuickTime wrapper but chances are the MP4 decoder might be able to open it. It's work a try (takes 2 seconds). If it doesn't work rename it back, you have nothing to loose.

The presets in Handbrake work exceptionally well with iphone, because the developer owns several of them. Unless you love ffmpeg, hb is just a couple of clicks. Handbrake is not an editor.

At one time, GoPro studio opened iPhone files and would convert to Cineform for editing in Vegas. Neat trick if it still works.

Downloaded Handbrake and used it. Worked! Appreciate all of your help. Thanks

You can also do this: Uninstall Quicktime (if installed) and install Quicktime 7.5.0 (old version yes) and install latest version of Avid QuickTime Codecs LE and K-lite Basic.
