DV Capture in V18 Pro?

PeterWright wrote on 1/28/2021, 12:21 AM

Hi all.
Minor irritation - has anyone managed to capture via Firewire in V18? When I open the new "Vegas Capture" app I get a small window showing a reproduction of my big windows, and that;s about all! The help files describe various menus and buttons which don't appear to be there, so I solve this by opening an older version of Vegas and using the old app.
Seems strange, though.

Activate DV capturing via "Deprecated Features".

Thank you Marco, I appreciate that. The Help files could have told me that under DV Capture, but didn't!

And when I looked up Deprecated Features, the Help files talk about the Deprecated Features tab, without mentioning that this tab is found under Options / Preferences. Pretty slack editing.

Then, as it happens, it still doesn't work - Clicking File > Capture Video opens the old box where we choose between DV and HDV, then after choosing DV and clicking Ok ...... a brief hourglass/circle ....... and nothing happens! If I choose HDV the app opens immediately, but doesn't connect to the Firewire converter, and that's not what I want to capture!

Ah well i still have plenty of old versions of Vegas installed.

This then usually is a Windows based driver problem.

This is crazy - I have had problems with Firewire drivers, but yesterday I bit the bulle, bought a new Firewire Card and reinstalled Legacy Drivers, then I was able to capture DV fine using V16.
Now I can't open the Capture App at all in V16, and in V17, it only opens for HDV, like in V18
Seems like I need to reinstall the Capture App - but how? It was always part of the Vegas Package, even though it was External.
Any ideas?

I've managed to submit a question to Support - not easy to do but I finally found a way! They say 2-4 days, which I'm happy to wait if a solution comes ....

The thing that is most strange is that previously, when I had Firewire connection problems, over quite a long period, the Capture app always opened ok, but it just did not find my connected device. Now, for the first time ever, the app will not open at all for DV, only if I select HDV. The same in older versions of Vegas,

Hi Peter,

One thing you probably have to do to connect to DV is to disable Device Control in the Vidcap utility.

Beyond that, there is a wealth of information by a Vegas user here.

Hi Musicvid - Thanks - yes, I know all about that - the thing is that that is a setting in the Capture app which will not even open for me, unless I select HDV instead of DV. It's never happened before - usually it opens then I often have trouble getting it to connect to my device, but at the moment it won't even open, and that's in any version of Vegas from V13 to V18 !
Thanks for the link - I shall have a good read .....

OK. This morning I began a brand new day with a new idea,

In V18, I went to Options / Preferences / Deprecated Features and DISABLED Video Capture.
After doing that, I opened both V16 and V17, and found that I could again capture DV !!!

To confirm I wasn't dreaming I enabled it again in V18, and sure enough, DV capture would not open in any version.

Now I have again disabled it in V18 and I can again capture in earlier versions.

When Support get back to me I shall tell them this and hopefully the bug will be fixed soon.
I wonder whether this applies to anything else in "Deprecated Features" ?

@PeterWright - I’m with you Peter! This is NOT the first time that I’ve noticed that Kickstarting a Function then rebooting VP somehow brings a Function back into play. Now, this proof of a failing Command - proving a False Negative - is just so elusive to S/W engineers. Over the last two decades, I’ve reported enough of them. Sometimes I regard myself as a One-Man, Job-Creation individual/tester for the Staff Team!

Keep it up Pete. 😉

Good to hear from you Grazie! I hope you're faring ok in these strange times.
Yes, this is a bit odd about DV Capture - I began by using older versions of Vegas to capture, then learned through this thread how to "enable" it in V18, which disabled it in all versions!
