Editing from MP4 that is super slow in Vegas

TTTT wrote on 11/29/2019, 6:37 AM

Hello,

I'm trying to edit something out of .m4v files that already are a .mkv conversion with Handbrake (because Vegas doesn't read .mkv).

This is not my usual file source/workflow.

Currently, the MP4 make Vegas preview windows so slow (even in Draft/Auto) that the only possible solution I see is to convert them all to uncompressed .avi.

(I don't mind too much the fact that uncompressed .avi takes disk space, I tend to use a lot of disk space to preserve quality when editing, but for this editing I care more about the wasted time.),

I there a smarter way that I could smooth the editing performance ?

Could there be some setting in Handbrake, something to do in Vegas ?

Thank you

Vegas Pro 17 reads several kinds of MKV assumed you have the MKV support enabled in Options/Preferences/File IO.

Hate to be sarcastic, but in the time it took to post and get answers to your question, couldn't you have made an AVI and moved on?

Depends on if it is running slow because your system isn't powerful enough to handle it or if there's an issue with the file causing it to run slower than it should.

Systems:

Desktop

AMD Ryzen 7 1800x 8 core 16 thread at stock speed

64GB 3000mhz DDR4

Geforce RTX 3090

Windows 10

Laptop:

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo 32GB (9980HK CPU, RTX 2060 GPU, dual 4K touch screens, main one OLED HDR)

@Marco. Thank you, Vegas now indeed reads MKV. The option is marked as "experimental" though.

@Dot: There are multiple files. I actually wrote this while encoding the first ones and then had to focus on other stuff and postpone the whole thing to some moment when I'll find time. But I do have the AVI files ready now indeed. (I asked also in case I'd need to repeat the process in the future.)

@fr0sty : My computer is usually not slowing down with various 4K camera file formats. In this case I would expect it has to do with the way the .m4v is encoded/decoded.

Conclusion: In my case the MKV reads smoother than the M4V files, but the AVI still reads smoother. I will go with the .avi in the end.

Try a proxy or XDCAM-EX18 instead of AVI.

You will be a happy camper. Post your source file and project properties if you would like specific support.
