Fades dissolves and cross fades not working

Barefoot_Rob wrote on 1/8/2022, 5:25 PM

Hello. I've been a user of Movie Studio since version 7, but I have just moved up to Vegas Edit, version 19, build 458. On my first project, I included an intro picture that lasted 5 seconds, then cross faded into the beginning of the video. I also added a fade in at the start of the intro picture, however none of the fades/dissolves worked with the final rendered file, in fact they show up on the timeline, but not in the preview window. Any idea on what could be wrong?

Thanks,

Rob

Show timeline screenshot.

Make sure the event clips are not duplicated.

Here is the screenshot:

I'm wondering if an uninstall and reinstall will fix the issue? I don't really want to do that unless that will help.

Its strange, during some of the editing the dissolves and fades worked, but only one time during the editing.

Oh, one more thing, I'm running on a new laptop with Windows 11.

I see a couple of fadeins/fadeouts, but no two events appear to be overlapped, therefore no dissolves are able to be applied.

Are you judging the effects by watching the Vegas preview, or have you actually viewed a rendered video of your project?

Don't reinstall your program; it's not fourth down. Some tutorials covering basic timeline management and navigation start here.

There actually is an overlap crossfade that shows between the 4th and 5th second, it's just hard to see due to the background, you can see it in the Pink "(Main 1/4)". This was originally worked using "Multicamera" with 4 video files.

You may want to limit the thumbnail preview to clear the confusion and make easier seeing the crossfades

What @set said in the first answer about duplicating clips. Your fades don't show in the preview. You can see an alternate view of the track events in your track 2 by expanding track layers, as per the manual:

Right-click the track header and choose
Expand Track Layers
to expand a video track to reveal three subtracks within the main track: the A roll, B roll, and transition roll. In this view, sequential clips alternate between the A and B rolls, and the overlapping area between events is represented by the transition roll.

Your fades don't show in the preview.

But the fades did show at least during one editing session.

Coming from Movie Studio, all fades showed. Doesn't make sense to me that they wouldn't in Pro. But having said that, like i said, they did show during at least one editing session.

I first noticed the lack of fades in the preview during editing, then during another editing session of the same video they showed up in the preview. Then in the final session before rendering, they weren't shoeing up again in the preview, however they were still showing in the timeline. However it was when watching the rendered video that I realized the fades didn't show.

This is a video of a concert one of our worship teams at church did. I used 4 cameras to record, and used Vegas' multicamera tool for cut selection. This was the first time for me to use that tool. Those changes were cuts, without transitions, however the title screen was a JPG file with a fade intro, and a cross fade from the JPG into the concert video. It was recorded in our youth room, which doesn't have a mini television studio, with a Blackmagic ATEM switcher, or even a direct audio feed from our productive audio board, like our auditorium does.

@Barefoot_Rob Hi, try going to C:\Users\'your name'\AppData\Local\VEGAS Pro\19.0 & delete everything in that folder, Vegas will take a bit longer to load next time you open but it will rebuild all those temp files,

Good suggestion, didn't think about that!

Tips: You can save a backup copy of the .VEG project if needed... very small size project files, so in case something goes wrong when trying find out the problem in the timeline... you can load the previous project backup.

It's hard to judge from the screenshot about what is going on... but @Former user's suggestion can be tried.

Here's what I seem to see at the beginning

JPG fading in

CUT to "Main 1/4"

Main 1/4 fading out

Cut to "Main 1/4" back to full

I think all you need to do is grab the end of JPG and drag it over the beginning of "Main 1/4" and you'll then have a dissolve between the two.

To confirm all is working fine, I would just do a File - Close. Drag two clips to the timeline, overlap the events on the timeline, and confirm you have a dissolve.

Former user wrote on 1/9/2022, 8:10 AM

@jetdv It looks like a crossfade to me, although there is another cut immediately after & a small section of that event, don't know why but it shouldn't affect it, unless there's something else going on there 🤷‍♂️

Former user wrote on 1/9/2022, 8:18 AM

@jetdv @Barefoot_Rob I recreated a crossfade, added a couple of cuts after, but what is going on in your pic (the one i posted above) I've highlighted with a red circle, ? Active take indicator?

My version

Thanks for all the input guys! Looking back at the saved file before I moved to the multicamera setup, the fades were working, so here in this screen grab you can see the fades, and they are working in the preview. I see that somehow I made a mistake in my timeline. I wouldn't have found it without all the help and suggestions here, I appreciate it!
