Firewire Win 10 Capture Mystery

richard-dyszel6471 wrote on 1/14/2022, 5:26 AM

Hi, My i-7 editing machine used to capture my DV tapes using firewire. After updating to Win 10 I lost that function. I have added the Legacy driver, the camera shows up in Device Manger and I can see the video and hear using VLC but The Pixela Transfer Utility which came with the Canon Camcorder says the camera is not plugged in.

I tried using the Capture in Vegas 19 but the Microsoft DV and VCR window remains black, which is interesting because I had to set the capture setting in VLC to Microsoft DV and VCR to watch the camcorder play. I am a bit concerned in that I have a library of over 400 DV tapes that I've used for storage and at a minimum I would want to capture them all while I still can.

Any and all help is appreciated.

My i-7 editing machine ...

i-7xxxx what?

After updating to Win 10 ...

Windows 11 is now the current version of Windows - unless you updated to Windows 10 a long time ago (circa 2015) when it was a free upgrade from W7 and W8.1.

Notwithstanding, do a forum search using keywords something like 'firewire Windows 10' and you may find something that helps.

For me, I've kept an old XP era computer with a firewire card to do MiniDV/VHS transfers to computer if/when needed. Personally, I have not ever been confident that older technology products will be supported with newer OS technology (e.g. printers, scanners and so on) some of which actually didn't make it into the Windows 10 era.

Thanks, but that's one of the first articles I read and that's where I found out about and then installed the legacy driver. I tried a Sony DV camcorder with a USB connection, but Win 10 says there is no driver available. I also connected an HDMI cable to my Canon HF20. I can get video through my Black Magic Intensity, but no audio.

Vegas capture doesn't work with USB or HDMI.

Thanks for nudging me in the right direction. I solved the problem. I went to my older machine that still has Vegas 15 on it and clicked capture video. I then got a screen to select DV or HDV. I clicked DV and the familiar screen popped up. I went to Vegas 19 on my editor, click on capture video and got a totally new screen. with no choices. I looked back at the Vegas 15 selection box and notice that the DV uses an external capture. I then went back to 19, went into preference and checked the box to use external capture. That's when another video capture appeared on the original video capture link and that one connected to my camcorder!

IT'S ALIVE!!!! Thank you!

Audrey!!! Love it. Back in the 80's I had the plant (as well as the show's director) on my hosted horror movie show promoting the touring company in DC and fed an intern to it. Loved the show.
