Flashing Black frames

Paul-Daley wrote on 8/18/2021, 4:44 PM

Hello - I just upgraded to v19 and opened a project I was working on in v18. The project is a video using iPhone video shot using Filmic. In v18, everything appears as expected. In v19, black frames start appearing randomly on playback and in the rendered output. I mean, obviously I can just finish the project in v18, but that's not really the point...

is it possible for you to share that clip with us on google drive or dropbox? that will help us to see if it is an issue specific to your hardware/drivers, an issue with the file, or an actual bug in VEGAS, if we can replicate it on other systems. That will help us to guide you to a solution.

thanks for sharing... hmm - quick test in my system, no trouble even though saw few glitches on the preview...

do very short quick cutting and editing, render... no trouble:

btw, try restart the system after VP19 install, just in case... in my previous experiences... that can happened.

Thank you. The file seems to be playing back flawlessly on my Asus Zenbook Pro Duo (32GB RAM, RTX 2060, I9 9980HK), so perhaps this is a driver conflict. Go into the VEGAS help menu, and check the driver update utility, does it recommend a new driver?

I would hazard a guess that it's your GPU drivers for either Preview or Render acceleration. There is a driver update feature in Vegas.

Also be sure that Snapping and Quantize to Frames are turned on before adding media to your project.

Paul-Daley wrote on 8/19/2021, 8:47 AM

Tried restarting. Didn't help.

Tried using new "Studio" drivers for my NVIDIA GTX 1060. Helped on the first pass, but once I started dragging the playhead around manually, the black frames cropped up again.

Still seeing the frames and given the comments here it sounds like a local issue to me... :(

Paul-Daley wrote on 8/19/2021, 9:01 AM

I think I found it. In the File I/O tab of the preferences, there's a "Legacy HEVC" check box. Figuring that v18 (where I see the video fine) might be using Legacy HEVC, I checked this box in v19 and restarted. Now, the video playback in Preview isn't as smooth, but no black frames either.

RogerS wrote on 8/19/2021, 9:12 AM

I do see glitches in places. It's also not random. Scrubbing back and forth it shows up in the same places.

Take a look at the frame numbers here and see if it's the same place.

I'm using an NVIDIA GTX 1050 with the Studio drivers, though decoding is with the Intel HD 630.

Musicvid wrote on 8/19/2021, 10:58 AM

1060 has pretty weak support. Maybe better to turn off GPU Acceleration of Video Processing in your Preferences

Possible. Consider converting to constant and testing again

fr0sty wrote on 8/19/2021, 11:39 AM

@VEGASDerek please have the team download this file and test it, more than one of us are able to repro the issues mentioned.

VEGASDerek wrote on 8/19/2021, 11:49 AM

Thanks for the info...I believe this specific problem is something we have already been tracking and do have a fix for in the first update.

In the mean time, the option right now is to change the preference in File I/O section to use the legacy HEVC decoder.

Paul-Daley wrote on 8/19/2021, 12:04 PM

Excellent. Thanks for this.

Harold-Linke wrote on 8/19/2021, 12:11 PM

@Paul-Daley I have aGTX1060 too. I have downloaded the clip and checked the preview: no problem on my side. As I had problmes with the NVIDIA dirver 471.41 and 471.68 I installed 461.72. Which driver are you using.

@VEGASDerek: the problem with the new NVIDIA drivers was that the graphics card was crashing and restarted when I opened any video playing application e.g. VLC Videolan etc. VP 19 worked with them.

fr0sty wrote on 8/19/2021, 12:19 PM

Once that new update comes out, you want to disable using that legacy hevc decoder, as it breaks some functionality (the legacy decoder cannot import 10 bit clips, for instance).

I have been able to playback fine in Vegas 18. Vegas 19 plays back fine on initial playing on the timeline, but when I stop playback and have it play again or move my play head, I get random blinking black frames or entire stretches in black. I can restart Vegas 19 and play the file again once through before this happens again. I've adjusted File I/O to use just the AVC Legacy Decoder. When I do that, Vegas is unable to find the files from the Canon r5. When I manually find them for Vegas through the dialogue option to find replacement files, ignore and leave the media offline or to ignore errors and load the project, it then says there is an error loading the project. I thought I would try AVC since the r5 files are AVC. I also tried HVEC Legacy Decoder, and the experimental decoder (as well as combinations of each). No love.

I also have the Hardware Decoder set to Auto NVIDIA... but if I change it to AMD UVD/VCN, the black frames are gone, but of course timeline playback is slower. Changing to legacy decoders did not work for me. It seems that the video card/driver isn't playing nice with Vegas.

I am using an ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 running Vegas Pro 18 (Latest Update) and Vegas 19. I have edited these files (from the Canon r5) in 18 without issue in the past, but I have not tried this current project files.

Processor    AMD Ryzen 9 5900HS with Radeon Graphics           3.30 GHz
Installed RAM    40.0 GB (39.4 GB usable)
Graphics: nVidia GeForce RTX 3060 (471.68 driver- most current)
System type    Windows 10 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

I am editing 4K LOG h265 mp4 HEVC files from an Autel Evo II Pro and Canon r5 4K mp4 AVC files
Both shot at 60p. The timeline matches the autel evo II Pro file settings (which is the same as the Canon r5 file settings).

Is 471.68 the studio driver?

It is the studio driver.

@j.razz From what you say, it sounds like a bug in the driver. Hopefully Magix takes note of this and can work with NVIDIA to fix it. Can you share MediaInfo for your specific file that shows glitches?

AVC legacy encoder doesn't work with newer file types so not surprising it didn't work.

Hi guys, also experiencing an issue with just one short video which was rendered with Voucoder. I am using latest nVidia drivers. I have tried turning off all GPU acceleration and also Legacy HVEC etc. For some reason this video is flickering or just black. It plays back fine in other applications.
