The dropdown twistee just to the R of the grid icon just above the preview window gives you a choice of grid or safe areas. Activating the grid/safe area is just a matter of clicking on the grid icon.

But that only gives you two lines, I was hoping for a real grid to line up items, like a grid like a checker board.

Make a transparent overlay in photoshop, same as your project size. Put it on your top track; done.

The grid resolution (number of horizontal/vertical lines) can be set in the "Options> Preferences> Video" menu, not sure if setting still exists in VP-18.
