help with video capture using Vegas Pro 18 edit

Richard-McMillian wrote on 6/25/2021, 11:50 AM

Hello,

Could someone please help me?

I am using Magix Vegas Pro edit 18 on a windows 10 O.S.

My system is up to date and has plenty of power.

I am wanting to do some video transfers using a Canopus avdc 300 capture device.

The Canopus goes into a fire wire PCI-E card, which does work with other software.

I've tried using it in Vegas 18 Pro Edit but I don't see an option to configure of select it.

In fact, the only capture option I see if for a screen capture.

Could someone please walk me through how I could configure the capture device to work in Vegas?

I have a ton of old video to transfer, and I really need help in getting Vegas to recognize my hardware.

Thanks everyone

@Richard-McMillian This is how I do it. Note that I recently tried on VP18 and only get a large black rectangle, and that was with “enable video capture” checked in deprecated features.

I was doing several vhs tape captures about a week or so ago, but I had to use VP16.

Capturing vhs ...

I also used the following method with source as a hi8 camcorder for my v8 tapes, as well as a vhs deck for my vhs tapes.

I captured my vhs tapes using the Vegas capture software.

I had an old JVC mini DV camcorder that takes line input.

I purchased a PCI-E firewire card for my PC.

I connected the VHS (or hi8 camcorder) OUTPUT to the Firewire card INPUT on the PC.  Note, leave mini DV without tape, put in play mode, enable line-in in the DV camcorder menu.  In the Vegas capture software, under options/preferences disable/un-check “Enable DV device control “.

The files saved are a fixed standard DV25 .avi.  Because of going through the electronics of the Mini DV camcorder the result is superior to the poorer, usually USB, digital capture devices.

If you have, or can purchase an old DV camcorder with line in its the way to go.

JVC-GR-DVP9 used ...

To use the JVC camcorder as passthrough... i.e. output of VCR to JVC camcorder input and then JVC camcorder output to PC firewire input.

In JVC menu set ...

#1 AV S-IN to ON

#2 In Vegas set “Device Control” to disabled.

#3 Remove tape from JVC.

#4 Set JVC to “Play” mode

Thank you for the advice.

I'll certainly give it a try.

Hopefully there is a way to use VP18's capture in conjunction with a Firewire port.

I know it works with Adobe Premier Pro, but I'd rather use Vegas.

I appreciate all the good advice everyone.

Have a great weekend.

@Richard-McMillian Hi Richard, you can also try this software, it is highly regarded, though no longer under development ... http://www.scenalyzer.com/

@Richard-McMillian There is no difference in what you capture in Premier vs. Vegas. If Premier works, why fight it. Capture it there and edit in Vegas. I always go the path of least resistance.

You need Capture Video. See below. This works with my Firewire card and Canopus device.

Windows 11Pro 64bit 21H2

Intel i9-12900K 32GB DDR5 - 6000 (XMP II) RAM

C:\ Samsung PCIe 4.0 Nvme 980 Pro. E:\ Samsung 980 Pro

Nvidia Getforce RTX3080Ti. Studio Driver 516.59

Intel UHD Graphics 770. Driver 30.0.101.1994

Sound Card: SB Audigy 5/RX
